I take it seriously enough because of how little I\u2019ve found over the two decades we have produced <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong> that is not in the form of newspaper articles or event fliers. Each and every piece can help to augment our posts whether it is predictable or one of a kind. Yet, the stories of how I arrive at the stories are often the exact opposite of astonishing. It\u2019s a bit hard in 2021 to get stoked over a relevant listing on <strong>eBay<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t expecting, but now at least I can tell you about a new book that notes a local milestone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The international educational publisher <strong>Springer Nature<\/strong>, through its <strong>Springer<\/strong> imprint based in Heidelberg, <strong>Germany,<\/strong> released in April an impressive volume called <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Cinema in Flux: The Evolution of Motion Picture Technology from the Magic Lantern to the Digital Era<\/span><\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"'The Cinema in Flux: The Evolution of Motion Picture Technology from the Magic Lantern to the Digital Era' @ Amazon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cinema-Flux-Evolution-Picture-Technology-dp-1071609505\/dp\/1071609505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Available at <strong>Amazon<\/strong> as of yesterday, <strong>Tuesday, May 11<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, the 817-page behemoth is written by the venerated author, filmmaker, and innovator <strong>Lenny Lipton<\/strong>, whose research and development led to advancements in stereoscopic imagery such as the <strong>RealD<\/strong> three-dimensional projection used in thousands of movie theaters worldwide. Eighty-three chapters trace the development of cinema from its primitive forms of the 1600s to digital adaptions in the present, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The Cinema in Flux\u2019 press release :: Springer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.springer.com\/us\/about-springer\/media\/press-releases\/corporate\/cinema-in-flux\/19142918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as stated in a Springer press release from last week<\/a><\/span>, with an effort made to elucidate on the numerous individuals whose work paved the way and their impact on society the world over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">How does it point to the C-U? One of the two men highlighted in <strong>Chapter 29<\/strong>, \u201c<strong>One Man Bands,\u201d<\/strong> is the late University of Illinois electrical engineering professor <strong>Joseph Tykoci\u0144ski-Tykociner<\/strong> (1877-1969). <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Talks about our first talking film :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=6462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We\u2019ve talked about his sound-on-film development<\/a><\/span> in the past and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"New Art Film Festival III :: \u2018Picture Shows du C-U\u2019 @ C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?page_id=13372\/#naff03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highlighted it at the <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. The other, an inventor from <strong>France<\/strong> named <strong>Eug\u00e8ne Augustin Lauste<\/strong> (1857-1935), made various attempts to develop a viable sound-on-film system by working both independently with colleagues in <strong>England<\/strong> and <strong>Europe<\/strong> and at American companies such as <strong>Thomas A. Edison<\/strong> and <strong>Bell Laboratories<\/strong>, according to Lipton. It\u2019s nice to see them singled out with recognition instead of a mere mention or two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gi_OT-rLUFY\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Clearly, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"'The Cinema in Flux: The Evolution of Motion Picture Technology from the Magic Lantern to the Digital Era' :: Springer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.springer.com\/us\/book\/9781071609507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a very grateful audience will pay $40 per eBook and $55 per hardcover<\/a><\/span> to pour through Lipton\u2019s grasp on technological advancements in the motion picture. Apart from the contextual wealth it is bound to provide researchers, historians, and gear aficionados, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Cinema in Flux<\/span> is illustrated with nearly 600 pictures \u2013 note the Tykociner portrait at the head of our post, cropped from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"'The Cinema in Flux' :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/thecinemainflux.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a collage appearing at the author\u2019s website<\/a><\/span> and flanked by Edison and the <strong>Lumi\u00e8re brothers<\/strong> \u2013 and begins with an introduction from another <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> pioneer, <strong>Douglas Trumbull<\/strong>, whose influential visual effects are found in the likes of <strong>BLADE RUNNER, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, SILENT RUNNING, THE TREE OF LIFE, BRAINSTORM<\/strong>, and \u2013 you know I\u2019m obliged to go here \u2013 <strong>2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It could easily be argued that Tykociner managed a sort of visual effect with his experiments, presenting subjects on his screen who could actually make noise in real time as they spoke and played instruments. A few years after the NAFF gave its audience a chance to watch an admittedly low-grade copy of the demonstration reel left behind by Tykociner, the <strong>National Film Preservation Foundation<\/strong> provided the means to create a much better transfer of the footage and its soundtrack. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Joseph T.
