To start, the Champaign Park District<\/strong> finally announced a schedule<\/a><\/span> for the Virginia Theatre<\/strong>, which will reopen to the public with a Gordon Lightfoot<\/strong> concert on Monday, August 16<\/strong>, and it includes retro film fare for both the mostly-pre-1960 crowd (The News-Gazette<\/span> Film Series<\/strong>) and mostly post-1980 pack (The Rewind 92.5 Movie Series<\/strong>) along with Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> in September. Also, on deck for the weekend beginning today, Friday, June 18<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, is the first in-public Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong> since 2019; organizer Kelly White<\/strong> and 40 North 88 West<\/strong> have provided a visual guide at their website<\/a><\/span> that, just like their days of yore, has no local cinema attractions in store<\/a><\/span>. We\u2019ll conclude with this recent article in the N-G<\/span><\/a><\/span> about producer Robin Christian<\/strong> of Dreamscape Cinema<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, who began filming something called C.O.R.N. 3<\/strong> in the area earlier this month; once it wraps, they\u2019ll have launched a whopping five features in the last five years<\/a><\/span>: the three sci-fi (f)ears of C.O.R.N.<\/strong>, the shark thriller BELOW<\/strong>, and the holiday dramedy A FARGO CHRISTMAS STORY<\/strong>. What<\/em> pandemic?<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n 25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 June 14-27, 1996:<\/em> After celebrating a grand opening in March and establishing a business model of serving alcohol and pizza with second-run Hollywood<\/strong> fare, the operators of the Brew & View at the Thunderbird<\/strong> team with The Octopus<\/strong><\/span> alternative weekly to develop signature events. Their inaugural show, \u201cThe 1st Annual Octopus<\/span> Sci Fi Film Festival<\/strong>,\u201d presents several science fiction classics and favorites across a two-week summer stretch at Urbana\u2019s Thunderbird Theater<\/strong>, touted in its previous first-run era as having the largest movie screen in Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>. Selected by Octopus<\/span> publisher Paul Young<\/strong> with assistance from his staff, including future New Art Film Festival<\/strong> program director Jason Pankoke<\/strong>, the marathon pairs episodes from the 1940 serial incarnation of pulp hero \u201cThe Shadow<\/strong>\u201d with a choice roster: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL<\/strong> (1951), DR. STRANGELOVE, INVADERS FROM MARS<\/strong> (1953), THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, THE ROAD WARRIOR, THE TERMINATOR<\/strong>, and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS<\/strong> (1953). All films are projected from 35 and 16 mm prints rented through various agencies from all over the United States<\/strong>. Similar shows of a more esoteric bent would follow the well-received \u201cSci Fi\u201d experience over the next year, ceasing in mid-1997 after the Brew & View\u2019s closure.
