I thought it might be fun to stray from the <strong>Champaign County<\/strong> beat for a spell and take a bit closer look at these developments, entangled on my interwebs and tantalizing me with fleeting glimpses as I browse every day for story leads and news reads. The fresh dirt is laid bare below, where I exhume five genre flicks that are clearly <em>not<\/em> of this C-U, so dig in \u2026 but <em>only<\/em> if you dare!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Samantha Marie stars in MY GIRLFRIEND THE SERIAL KILLER. (Artwork: courtesy Huey House Productions via Facebook)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_horror_girlfriendkiller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"483\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We\u2019ll begin our Tour de Fright at the famous river city where it\u2019s rumored that if it can play there, it has staying (and scaring) power anywhere. <strong>Peoria<\/strong>-based event videographer and filmmaker <strong>Derek Huey<\/strong> shared on <strong>Facebook<\/strong> with our friendly neighborhood <strong>Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Exclusive Stills from Retro 80s Slasher \u2018My Girlfriend the Serial Killer\u2019\u2019 by Tori Danielle :: PopHorror\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pophorror.com\/exclusive-stills-from-retro-80s-slasher-my-girlfriend-the-serial-killer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a link to a post by <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">PopHorror<\/span>.com<\/strong> that revealed the first set images<\/a><\/span> from <strong>MY GIRLFRIEND THE SERIAL KILLER<\/strong>. This long-planned tale of terror <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"MY GIRLFRIEND THE SERIAL KILLER group @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1291626774333090\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finally got underway in early September<\/a><\/span> after being promoted through the indie horror grapevine for a spell. <strong>Samantha Marie<\/strong> is the co-writer and co-director with Huey on this project, a female-led frightener that is seemingly bent on bringing the gruesome fun with a dash of the supernatural on top, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Huey House Productions @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Huey-House-Productions-109042284197227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Huey House Productions<\/strong><\/a><\/span> plans to resume work on it in March of next year. Set to star in <strong>GIRLFRIEND<\/strong> with Marie are <strong>Robert Bess, Noellie Burger, Jason Alan Cook, Joe DeBartolo, Heather Harlow, Mel Helfin, Kaylee Williams<\/strong>, and the very busy <strong>SLEEPAWAY CAMP<\/strong> veteran <strong>Felissa Rose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Marie, DeBartolo, and Harlow will also appear in <strong>TORTURE THE FLESH<\/strong>, another serial killer drama that has finally sprung to bloody life after a delay.<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Cheevies Film Productions :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cheeviesfilms.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Cheevies Film Productions<\/strong><\/a><\/span> of <strong>Elburn<\/strong> released <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"TORTURE THE FLESH teaser :: boomstickfilms channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Hzh9kdD3fZA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a very terse preview on <strong>October 1<\/strong> that promises revenge<\/a><\/span> at the hands of shotgun-wielding Daniel (<strong>Darin Bowman<\/strong>) after murder apparently tears his family apart. Additionally, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"TORTURE THE FLESH @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/torturetheflesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">production shots on Facebook<\/a><\/span> depict a strong police procedural angle to the story while very little has been revealed about the horrors in store, apart from that provocative title. <strong>Bill H. Bailey, Bobby Bozek, Andre Boyd, Portia Chellelynn, Michael Holub, Jay Jewitt, Chantelly Johnson, Lillian Lamour, Jimmy Shay<\/strong>, and Gary Soumar lead a large cast that includes another well-known genre actress, <strong>Lynn Lowry<\/strong> from <strong>SHIVERS<\/strong>, while downstate actor <strong>Myles Valentine<\/strong> (<strong>FINAL SUMMER<\/strong>) can be seen leading the charge of officers at the preview\u2019s end. Launched two decades ago and captained by <strong>Derek Braasch<\/strong> and <strong>Nina Trader-Braasch<\/strong>, the prolific mini-studio also runs the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Reel Horror Fest @ FilmFreeway\" href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/ReelHorrorFest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Reel Horror Fest<\/strong>, which will return for its third year<\/a><\/span> on <strong>Saturday, October 30<\/strong>, in <strong>Lombard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Myles Valentine stars in TORTURE THE FLESH. Crowdson is co-producing with <strong>Ayokunle Spencer<\/strong> of <strong>Tyayoku Studios<\/strong> in <strong>Lexington, Kentucky<\/strong>, while <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>-based cinematographer <strong>Bo-Yu Chen<\/strong> directed the camera work and <strong>Clinton Robison<\/strong> of <strong>R&amp;R Film Productions<\/strong> in <strong>Bloomington<\/strong> served as the assistant director. Filmed primarily at a bed and breakfast location near <strong>Chatham<\/strong> back in August, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Springfield's independent films\u2019 by Cinda Ackerman Klickna :: Illinois Times\" href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoistimes.com\/springfield\/springfields-independent-films\/Content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to an article published by the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Illinois Times<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>, <strong>DON\u2019T LET ME STAY<\/strong> appears to take a more low-key approach to its characters\u2019 conundrums than our other movies. <strong>Jacki Bainter, Isabella Cooper, Devin Durbin, Thomas Fitch, Ronnie Hudson II, Nick Kafkis, Max Kwiatowski, Tabitha Ott, Eric Schanker<\/strong>, and <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> graduate student <strong>Keenan Dailey<\/strong> (<strong>GREENE<\/strong>) play the primary roles in an indie shrouded in mystery, given how little exists about it on the Web, and maybe that is good discipline in this share-all social media age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then again, if <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Mashley at the Movies\u2019 podcast @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mashleymovies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the C-U podcast <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mashley at the Movies<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> hadn\u2019t passed along a tidbit on Facebook about the next title, I would not have known enough about it to share! <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"STL-made grindhouse film \u2018Fountaine and the Vengeful Nun Who Wouldn\u2019t Die\u2019 to debut at Skyview Drive-In\u2019 by Jason Green :: The Arts STL\" href=\"http:\/\/theartsstl.com\/stl-made-grindhouse-film-fountaine-and-the-vengeful-nun-who-wouldnt-die-to-debut-at-skyview-drive-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The <strong>Skyview Drive-In Movie Theater<\/strong> of <strong>Belleville<\/strong> hosted the world premiere<\/a><\/span> of <strong>FOUNTAINE AND THE VENGEFUL NUN WHO WOULDN\u2019T DIE<\/strong> on <strong>Tuesday, September 21<\/strong>, and I imagine the crew at <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Monster Kid Productions @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Monster-Kid-Productions-106216287826802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Monster Kid Productions<\/strong><\/a><\/span> wouldn\u2019t have unleashed it any other way. Directed by <strong>James Dean<\/strong> and starring <strong>Jaclyn Tripp, Ron Clower, Zera Lynd, Brian Davis, Keith Nussbaum<\/strong>, and <strong>Mallory Stern<\/strong> as \u201cMary\u201d the titular sister, <strong>FOUNTAINE<\/strong> may appear to the non-film schooled as a <strong>KILL BILL<\/strong> knock-off made on an impoverished budget, but it\u2019s really a go-for-broke salute to all the sleazy, oozing, exploitative, kung-fu punching action one could have handled on an average day, circa 1981, playing the grindhouses located up and down <strong>42nd Street<\/strong> in <strong>New York City<\/strong>. Judge for yourselves how well this <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>-made concoction apes the qualities of disreputable vintage cinema by <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"FOUNTAINE AND THE VENGEFUL NUN WHO WOULDN\u2019T DIE trailer @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DOk32qxOl08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watching the trailer on <strong>YouTube<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and eyeballing the poster art below with <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Katt Shea on THEY CALL HER ONE EYE\u2019 episode :: \u2018Trailers From Hell\u201d channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iF9FrX7Tr7M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a noticeable <strong>THRILLER<\/strong> vibe<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Mallory Stern stars in FOUNTAINE AND THE VENGEFUL NUN WHO WOULDN\u2019T DIE. Let\u2019s jet all the way from the <strong>East St. Louis<\/strong> region to Lexington, where <strong>The ScareFest Horror and Paranormal Convention<\/strong> will host <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"13 SLAYS TILL X-MAS theatrical premier :: The Scarefest 13, Lexington, KY\" href=\"https:\/\/thescarefest.com\/the-scarefest-to-host-the-theatrical-premier-of-13-slays-till-x-mas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a \u201cblack carpet\u201d theatrical premiere of <strong>13 SLAYS TILL X-MAS<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on <strong>Saturday, October 23, 7 p.m.<\/strong>, at the <strong>Central Bank Center<\/strong>. As the holiday anthology has already been<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"13 SLAYS TILL X-MAS :: Scream Team Releasing\" href=\"https:\/\/screamteamreleasing.com\/products\/13-slays-till-x-mas-blu-ray-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> distributed on Blu-ray disc by <strong>Scream Team Releasing<\/strong> since the spring<\/a><\/span>, I take it this event is meant to give the project and its collaborators a belated public bow as well as serving as a hometown showing for <strong>13 SLAYS<\/strong> producers <strong>P.J. Starks<\/strong> and <strong>Eric Huskisson<\/strong> and their studio, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Blood Moon Pictures :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/bloodmoonpictures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blood Moon Pictures<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, which is based in nearby <strong>Owensboro<\/strong>. I\u2019m including <strong>13 SLAYS<\/strong> because one of the segments, \u201cKringles the Christmas Clown,\u201d was filmed in <strong>Illinois<\/strong> by <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Rural fiends take root on Amazon :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=14396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jed Brian<\/strong> (<strong>UNLISTED OWNER<\/strong>)<\/a><\/span> and stars Peoria actor <strong>Steve Christopher<\/strong> (<strong>COLLEGE DEBTS<\/strong>) as \u201cKringles.\u201d A last-minute fact check confirms that <a title=\"13 SLAYS TILL X-MAS @ Amazon Prime\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Slays-till-X-mas-Michael-Merchant\/dp\/B09JCJCMX8\/ref=sr_1_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>13 SL<span style=\"color: #800000;\">AYS<\/span><\/strong> <em>is<\/em> available to purchase or rent through <strong>Amazon Prime<\/strong><\/span><\/a> when it had been AWOL only a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And with <em>that<\/em> final gruesome gift in the grab bag, we\u2019re just about done kicking up dust along our detour that is lined with on-screen killers and cretins. Horror is a universal language in storytelling and a thematic avenue rich with potential to explore all the things that make us human, imperfect, and susceptible to the unknown. It can awaken us, thrill us, and shake us to the core. To some viewers, that will sound <em>exactly<\/em> like a recipe for fun whether it\u2019s <strong>All Hallow\u2019s Eve<\/strong> or any other time of the year.
