I\u2019m doing the best I can with it, and a highlight has been my return to the podcasting sphere. Several years have passed since I dared to invoke <strong>ZONTAR, THE THING FROM VENUS<\/strong> on my last episode to date of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Damian Duffy Hates Everything<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Damian Duffy Hates Everything\u2019 page @ Spotify\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/05hXI8iFDGEIHIiYSsfK4R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the sarcastic slice of pop culture pontification<\/a><\/span> I co-hosted with <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> arts educators <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Damian Duffy :: Portfolio Site\" href=\"http:\/\/damianduffy.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Damian Duffy<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Re-nourish :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/re-nourish.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eric Benson<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Since my self-exile to <strong>Momkoke Manor<\/strong> in another part of <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, they have teamed up with the capable <strong>Stephen \u201cSven\u201d Johnson<\/strong> of the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Champaign is Also a Band\u2019 page @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ChampaignIsAlsoABand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Champaign Is Also a Band<\/span><\/strong> \u2018cast<\/a><\/span> to keep the show afloat under various alternate titles. On roughly the ninth anniversary of recording the first dollop of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DDHE<\/span>, I\u2019ve once again taken a seat behind a live mic to discuss films that twist the very nature and expectations of \u201chorror\u201d in cinema.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Chase Todd<\/strong> and <strong>Aaron Sheppard<\/strong> of the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Chase &amp; Shep Show :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/chaseandshep.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chase &amp; Shep Show<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> invited me to participate in their marathon run of once-a-day \u201c<strong>31 Slays<\/strong>\u201d episodes shared to <strong>YouTube<\/strong> throughout October. I agreed to come on, knowing my from-the-hip speaking and research skills were rusty, and sifted through their \u201cset list\u201d of the genre\u2019s hits and misfits they wanted to cover. I chose two that were not the most obvious picks and deferred to a fellow guest for my final appearance. So, how did it go? <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u201831 Slays of Halloween\u2019 episode 1: KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE :: \u2018The Chase &amp; Shep Show\u2019 @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/k3xLgwDh3pc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For \u201cSlay 1,\u201d which kicked off the 2021 series<\/a><\/span> at the stroke of midnight on <strong>Friday, October 1<\/strong>, we took on <strong>KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE<\/strong> (1988), a crayon-colored lark from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Chiodo Brothers Productions, Inc. @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ChiodoBros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the <strong>Chiodo Brothers<\/strong> effects team<\/a><\/span> responsible for the creature designs in <strong>CRITTERS<\/strong> and <strong>ERNEST SCARED STUPID<\/strong>. Starring <strong>Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson<\/strong>, the late <strong>Royal Dano<\/strong>, and the late, great <strong>John Vernon<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE trailer :: MGM channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ETiSMS4i1as\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>KLOWNS<\/strong> is a remarkable visual feat<\/a><\/span> produced on a $2 million budget with its head in a weird stratosphere and heart stuck in the sci-fi Fifties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_chasenshep_killerklownkast_LG.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"(Clockwise, from top left) Chase Todd, Aaron Sheppard, and Jason Pankoke discuss KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE on \u2018The Chase &amp; Shep Show.\u201d (Photo: courtesy Chase &amp; Shep via YouTube)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_chasenshep_killerklownkast.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We then went small before ballooning nearly out of control. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u201831 Slays of Halloween\u2019 episode 15: CHEAP THRILLS :: \u2018The Chase &amp; Shep Show\u2019 @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ON-Lb97pT4k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For \u201cSlay 15,\u201d half-way through the set<\/a><\/span>, yours truly and Todd picked apart the grueling pleasures of <strong>CHEAP THRILLS<\/strong> (2014), <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"CHEAP THRILLS :: Alamo on Demand\" href=\"https:\/\/ondemand.drafthouse.com\/film\/cheap-thrills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a darkly wry flick that premiered the year before<\/a><\/span> at <strong>South by Southwest<\/strong> in <strong>Austin, TX<\/strong>. Director <strong>E.L. Katz<\/strong> and crew pit a pair of desperate blue-collar workers (<strong>Pat Healy, Ethan Embry<\/strong>) against a well-off couple (<strong>David Koechner, Sara Paxton<\/strong>) who get their kicks by paying the duo wads of cash for increasingly uncouth behavior. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u201831 Slays of Halloween\u2019 episode 23: I SAW THE DEVIL :: \u2018The Chase &amp; Shep Show\u2019 @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lyWCKaQzEtI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">And for \u201cSlay 23,\u201d<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chase &amp; Shep<\/span> engineered an unofficial <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DDHE<\/span> reunion with myself, Benson, and Duffy, the latter of whom selected the even darker South Korean thriller from controversial filmmaker <strong>Kim Jee-woon<\/strong>, <strong>I SAW THE DEVIL<\/strong> (2011). In a highly polished feature that is truly not for everyone, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"I SAW THE DEVIL :: Magnet Releasing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.magnetreleasing.com\/isawthedevil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the storytelling takes its time to show us the depths<\/a><\/span> to which a secret agent (<strong>Lee Byung-hun<\/strong>) will go to match wits with the doughy serial killer (<strong>Choi Min-sik<\/strong>, star of <strong>OLDBOY<\/strong>) who eviscerated his girlfriend and unborn child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although this means I am now three \u201cSlays\u201d and out, I can say that I enjoyed taking this detour on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chase &amp; Shep Show<\/span>; be sure to listen to the above episodes and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Write to C-U Blogfidental!\" href=\"mailto:cuconfidential@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">let us know what you think<\/a><\/span>.
