Since we\u2019re providing you dearest readers with a few surprise treats in the form of bonus articles we hadn\u2019t originally planned on writing, we\u2019ll keep this Report<\/strong> brief. (Or, so we think<\/em>.) An entry in the genre of \u201cset in Illinois<\/strong> but filmed elsewhere\u201d has been rescued by specialty label Ronin Flix<\/strong>, which reissued HAUNT<\/strong> on Blu-ray<\/a><\/span> in September after offering a deluxe edition one year ago. Written and directed by Scott Beck<\/strong> and Bryan Woods<\/strong>, friends who grew up in the Quad Cities<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and scripted the smash hit A QUIET PLACE<\/strong>, the low-budget production takes place in Carbondale<\/strong> where young friends discover a rural haunted house that promises \u201cextreme\u201d scares turning out to be all too real. The filmmakers drew from growing up with Midwest Halloweens<\/a><\/span> and chose the home of Southern Illinois University<\/strong> as their story\u2019s location \u2013 not necessarily congruent with the city\u2019s past associations with the holiday<\/a><\/span> \u2013 even though photography took place in Kentucky<\/strong> and Ohio<\/strong>. Despite good reviews and the involvement of co-producer Eli Roth<\/strong>, HAUNT<\/strong> had only received a bare-bones theatrical and DVD release<\/a><\/span> before now.<\/p>\n And then, noted for extremity on a higher plane is SHATTER DEAD<\/strong>, possibly the most visceral and idea-minded horror film made during the mid-Nineties boom of shot-on-video, direct-to-video, regional fare. (Personally, your humble editor would say SHATTER DEAD<\/strong> punches the gut even harder than the slick, gratuitous, upmarket I SAW THE DEVIL<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Fight him.) Scooter McCrae<\/strong>\u2019s startling debut, which Ye Ed<\/strong> reviewed way back in MICRO-FILM<\/span> 6<\/strong> and witnessed being disqualified from consideration for the local Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> due to its onscreen transgressions, is newly re-released as a stacked Blu-ray from the fledgling label Saturn\u2019s Core<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and sub-distributed by the ever-surprising Vinegar Syndrome<\/strong>; dig into Mondo Digital<\/strong>\u2019s review<\/a><\/span> of the upgrade and keep watch for announcements from our friends at Happy Cloud Media<\/strong><\/a><\/span> about a SHATTER DEAD<\/strong> companion book they have in the works, adding to the creeping legend of this New York<\/strong> outburst-for-camera financed with pocket change and saturated in urban grim.<\/p>\n Finally, our man Jed Brian<\/strong> let us know about a special showing next Friday, November 5<\/strong>, at the Eagle Theater<\/strong> in Robinson, IL<\/strong>. After a live recording at 6:30 p.m.<\/strong> by The NerdUp Podcast<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> in the lobby, an Illinois indie double feature will commence with the brand-new cut of Brian\u2019s UNLISTED OWNER<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at 8 p.m.<\/strong>, followed at 9:45 p.m.<\/strong> by HIGH ON THE HOG<\/strong>, a tale of deviant marijuana harvesters that turns madcap deadly from director Tony Walsh<\/strong> and featuring B-stars Joe Estevez<\/strong> (SOULTAKER<\/strong>) and the late Sid Haig<\/strong> (THE DEVIL\u2019S REJECTS<\/strong>) and Robert Z\u2019Dar<\/strong> (MANIAC COP<\/strong>). Shot several years before its 2019 release through Indican Pictures<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, HIGH ON THE HOG<\/strong> had on its crew Shatterglass Studios<\/strong> regular Anthony \u201cAce\u201d Cabral<\/strong> as first assistant director and University of Illinois<\/strong> graduates Ashlea Thomsen<\/strong> and Sam Carmichael<\/strong> as second assistant director and production manager, respectively. Since then, Carmichael has worked on numerous high-profile releases<\/a><\/span> from Warner Bros.
