FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said<\/strong><\/p>\n

After this month is in the books, I\u2019ll be powering down the Reports<\/strong> to a minimum until at least February so I can devote more time to other areas of CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> that have been neglected, including a few Almanac<\/strong> entries I\u2019d like to finally hang on the timeline du C-U like sparkly garland. I hope our notes and context on local film culture have given you extra incentive<\/a><\/span> to rely on our weekly Calendar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For today, I have our three topics and will get right to the point. Enjoy and support the 20th annual Route 66 Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span> based in Springfield<\/strong>, which begins limited streaming runs of sessions today, Friday, November 5<\/strong>, and continues through Monday, November 15<\/strong>, with a hybrid awards ceremony held in person and broadcast via Zoom<\/strong> set for Saturday, November 13<\/strong>. Also enjoy and support the 28th Chicago Underground Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span> virtually and at the city\u2019s Logan Theatre, 2646 N. Milwaukee Avenue<\/strong>, which opens today as well and lasts through this Sunday, November 7<\/strong>. Both offer wide-ranging and challenging programs<\/a><\/span> filled with short subjects and features that originate from all over the world<\/a><\/span>, and to have them unspooling on the same fall weekend \u2013 CUFF has typically bewildered the Windy City during the summer in recent years \u2013 is a bounty and not necessarily an either\/or choice. Study their listings well or pick randomly and dive in!<\/p>\n

Assuming you partake, I trust you will be appreciative of the hard work undertaken each and every year by festival director Siobhan Johnson<\/strong> and the board of R66FF as well as festival artistic director Bryan Wendorf<\/strong> and his crew at CUFF to put on their non-corporatized shows rooted in Illinois<\/strong>, especially while this pandemic continues. They will<\/em> value you watching their selections, talking about their selections, talking selections with<\/em> them if the opportunities present themselves, and maybe most importantly, sharing your experiences with others. All conjecture and gut feeling, this last sentiment is, but I absolutely believe it. And then, we turn right around and there is next Wednesday, November 10<\/strong>. Of course, it means little now to you. I call it the third anniversary of no New Art Film Festival<\/strong> at the Art Theater<\/strong>. Feel any<\/em> sense of loss, C-U?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

p.s.<\/em> I\u2019m tacking on an excuse to link to the website of the 30th annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, which launched on Thursday, November 4<\/strong>, and will be presenting online screenings as well as in-person events at the Tivoli Theatre, 6350 Delmar Boulevard<\/strong>, and several other locations<\/a><\/span> through Sunday, November 21<\/strong>. My comments above apply to this long-running showcase, by far the largest and most in-depth of the three in action this weekend.
