I can roll with it on the better days and allow it to roil me when life is a chore. To decompress, I really have to reach in order to get my kicks \u2018round here, what few I can drum up when my peoples and relevant parties are so far away, and that has included browsing the ever-shrinking A\/V sections of this area\u2019s big box and discount stores. The most interesting site to me is <strong>Walmart<\/strong>; they stock just enough off-brand titles to warrant a visit every week or two, and the array has been a case study in what appears and how it is displayed and priced, especially in the current retail climate of patchy delivery to the merchants. At times, as I found by accident the week before <strong>Thanksgiving<\/strong> in the <strong>Ottawa<\/strong> location, it works just right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Rounding the end cap of the videos-and-televisions aisle, I was struck by how vacant many of the rows had become in the \u201cnew release\u201d section. Conversely, that made it easy to notice an octet of festive covers that were new to me and clearly playing on the Christmastime movies aired by the <strong>Hallmark<\/strong>, <strong>AMC<\/strong>, and <strong>Lifetime<\/strong> networks. I recognized <strong>BAKING UP LOVE<\/strong>, as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Calendar: November 12-18, 2021 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=14491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I had just brought it up in a <strong>Calendar<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, and then realized the entire set was made up of recent productions from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Gemelli Films :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gemellifilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gemelli Films<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, the <strong>New York<\/strong> studio that set up shop in nearby <strong>Morton<\/strong> earlier this year to film <strong>LOVE<\/strong>. One flip to the back jackets confirmed that Gemelli had sold domestic rights for <strong>DECK THE HEART, JOY &amp; HOPE, THE MALTESE HOLIDAY<\/strong>, and <strong>LOVE<\/strong> to <strong>Echo Bridge Acquisition Corp.<\/strong>, the label behind <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"C-U studio earning showbiz SLICE :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the physical release of <strong>Zoe Lister-Jones\u2019 CONSUMED<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, and <strong>SP Releasing, Inc.<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"SP Releasing, Inc. :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spreleasing.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an indie-leaning firm<\/a><\/span> run by actor and occasional <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> producer <strong>Steven Paul<\/strong> (<strong>GHOST RIDER<\/strong>). Placing DVDs and Blu-ray\/DVD combo packs for each title side-by-side like this made for a tidy Gemelli display, and I picked up <strong>LOVE<\/strong> for the Confidential collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Gemelli Films represents at Walmart nationwide in mid-November 2021, thanks to their distribution deal with SP Releasing, Inc. (Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_bakinguplove_gemelliset.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"358\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Produced by <strong>Monika Mannix<\/strong> and <strong>Jeff Timmons<\/strong>, the latter of <strong>98 Degrees<\/strong> boy band fame, in association with <strong>Gold Hive Media<\/strong> and <strong>Heartly Creations<\/strong>, <strong>BAKING UP LOVE<\/strong> is the result of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018This Peoria-area community could be a pumpkin-themed movie set this spring\u2019 by Steve Stein :: Peoria Journal Star\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pjstar.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2021\/04\/20\/morton-could-be-movie-set-for-baking-up-love-film\/7287759002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a partnership between the village of Morton and writer-director <strong>Candice T. Cain<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, an industry veteran and former talent agent who also serves as president of Gemelli. The first of the company\u2019s 10 features and four series to be shot on location outside of New York, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BAKING UP LOVE trailer :: \u2018Upcoming Movies\u2019 channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nHNGdTZY0MI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>LOVE<\/strong> is a family-friendly drama<\/a><\/span> starring Gemelli regular <strong>Alix Kermes<\/strong> as \u201cLynn,\u201d who attempts to win a holiday baking contest being put on by the \u201cMorton Pumpkin Company.\u201d You can probably guess the choice ingredients at play here: unfulfilled dreams, family conflict, romantic interests, surprise twists, and a feel-good resolution by the time end credits begin. Along with a whole bushel of central <strong>Illinois<\/strong> extras, <strong>LOVE<\/strong> features <strong>Jason Frederick, Michael Bonini, Catherine Cain, Missy Byrd, Allison Grischow, Stefanie Bloom, Kenney Myers, David Otunga<\/strong>, and Timmins in the cast. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018\u2018Baking Up Love\u2019 movie set in Morton premieres Saturday at Morton Cinemas\u2019 by Janie Bohlmann and Liz Lape :: WMBD-TV\/CIProud.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centralillinoisproud.com\/news\/local-news\/baking-up-love-movie-set-in-morton-premieres-saturday-at-morton-cinemas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It received an orange-carpet premiere<\/a><\/span> \u2013 nice touch! \u2013 at the <strong>VIP Morton Cinemas<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday, August 28<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the looks of things, Gemelli\u2019s immediate future is full steam ahead. Almost all of their productions have been made available on streaming sites like <strong>Amazon Prime<\/strong> and <strong>Sony Pictures\u2019 Pure Flix<\/strong> in recent months. Since Thanksgiving, more Gemelli titles have arrived on disc from SP\/Echo Bridge and staked their clam on the shelving space at Walmart; this wave includes <strong>HEARTS &amp; VINES, MAGIC IN MOUNT HOLLY<\/strong>, and <strong>A HOLIDAY HOMECOMING<\/strong>. The latter, a tale of orphans displaced during the holidays and a lead-in to the upcoming series <strong>WELCOME TO HOPE<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018'A Holiday Homecoming' plans premier in Lincoln\u2019 by staff :: The Courier\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolncourier.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/12\/06\/movie-premieres-lincoln-colleg\/8837231002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was given its own Midwest premiere<\/a><\/span> on <strong>Saturday, December 11<\/strong>, at the performing arts building of <strong>Lincoln College<\/strong> in <strong>Lincoln<\/strong>, augmented by bonus meet-and-greet events and an \u201cacting primer\u201d by Gemelli talent. Why did the <strong>Long Island<\/strong> creatives pick Lincoln for <em>this<\/em> outreach? How the show ended up in Illinois\u2019 by Jean Ann Miller :: The Courier\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolncourier.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/11\/06\/tv-show-wrath-rituals-being-filmed-lincoln-illinois\/6282250001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">film scenes in Lincoln and Morton for <strong>WRATH &amp; RITUALS<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, a new thriller series about secret societies and religious prophecy uncovered by \u201cCiman Thomas,\u201d a police officer portrayed by <strong>BAKING UP LOVE<\/strong> actor Otunga. Combined, it\u2019s an informative listen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As Gemelli Films puts their upcoming round of features and serials through the paces while the brand takes hold in the streaming sphere, their roster on disc has already begun to cycle out. Perennial holiday titles and a Hallmark push, combined with the calculated drops of <strong>VENOM 2, NO TIME TO DIE<\/strong>, and other <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> heavyweights, have displaced a fair share of lingering flicks. I\u2019ve noticed that our Walmarts decided to bunch together the SP\/Gemelli catalog and move it a couple of sections down from the brand-new releases, omitting <strong>THE MALTESE HOLIDAY<\/strong> and <strong>BAKING UP LOVE<\/strong> <em>en route<\/em>. I\u2019m not surprised as those two exude \u201c<strong>Christmas<\/strong>\u201d the least, even with the label\u2019s best effort to work a red-and-green palette and seasonal graphics into their packaging. (DG is an occasional source of amusement as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u201831 Slays of Halloween\u2019 episode 15: CHEAP THRILLS :: \u2018The Chase &amp; Shep Show\u2019 @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ON-Lb97pT4k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I\u2019ve previously discussed with <strong>Chase &amp; Shep<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.) Sitting on top of a stack of sell-through videos, of all things, was a copy of Gemelli\u2019s first feature production, <strong>WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT<\/strong>. Also written and directed by Cain, this decidedly non-Pure Flix affair \u2013 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT trailer @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ssDicKCcs9I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">witness the \u201cR\u201d rating at the head of its trailer<\/a><\/span> \u2013 features Kermes, Otunga, and hip-hop personality <strong>Amber Rose<\/strong> in a party-night comedy of errors. <a title=\"WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT :: GVN Releasing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gvnreleasing.com\/films\/what-happened-last-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>GVN Rel<span style=\"color: #800000;\">easing<\/span><\/strong> of <strong>Studio City, CA<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and <strong>Canada<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Alliance Entertainment<\/strong> issued it in <strong>North America<\/strong> with a distribution assist from Sony, which handles physical media worldwide for SP Releasing as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> Mere hours before finally running this article, I visited a Walmart in <strong>Plano<\/strong>. The Gemelli armada of DVDs and Blu-rays was there as I\u2019ve described, but this one had also kept <strong>BAKING UP LOVE<\/strong> and <strong>THE MALTESE HOLIDAY<\/strong> in stock. I found them paired in the next section over. In fact, said section had numerous other recent releases from second-tier labels that I had not seen in the locations closer to home. You mean, I <em>can<\/em> haz <strong>WEREWOLVES WITHIN<\/strong> with <strong>Sam<\/strong> \u201c<strong>CHAMPAIGN ILL<\/strong>\u201d <strong>Richardson<\/strong>, too? <em>Nice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"BAKING UP LOVE (Echo Bridge Acquisition Corp.\/SP Releasing, Inc.)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_bakinguplove_DVDcover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"629\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gemelli Films of Brookhaven, NY, has taken a liking to downstate Illinois.
