Looking back 100 years ago this week, it\u2019s astounding to imagine how much our past generations had to work through in order to put a flickering image up on the screen in the first place, let alone a discernible sound in our ears. Never underestimate our capabilities or play down our accomplishments then and now, dearest friends and neighbors of Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond, and let\u2019s do our damned best to keep filming, watching, dissecting, archiving, promoting, attending, supporting, and progressing in the local cinema arts. Cheers.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n 100 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Friday, June 9, 1922:<\/em> A pet project developed in parallel with a remarkable early career in electrical engineering, University of Illinois<\/strong> professor Joseph Tykocinski-Tykociner<\/strong> demonstrates a \u201csound-on-film\u201d projector for his colleagues and university officials in Room 100 of what is now the Material Science and Engineering Building<\/strong> on campus. His apparatus is capable of reading and amplifying a \u201csound track\u201d encoded along the side of a film strip, thanks to photoelectric cells developed by UI physics professor Jakob Kuntz<\/strong>. Friction between the inventor and his employer over patent rights to the device, along with a chilly reception from the movie industry, would thwart his dreams of it being put into widespread use. Extensive collections of his papers and other ephemera, including schematic drawings of the projection system and video duplicates of the surviving film tests, have been stored in the UI Archives<\/strong><\/a><\/span> since Tykociner’s passing in 1969.
