Conner (writer\/director, LIPSTICK, Predestined Arts & Entertainment, Springfield, IL) \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said<\/strong><\/p>\n Apparently, this month is<\/em> the long-awaited point in our Calendar<\/strong> when the local film culture emerges en force<\/em> after many months of creation isolation while the pandemic wanes ever so slowly. Our Report<\/strong> today begins in Springfield<\/strong> at the Hoogland Center for the Arts<\/strong> in the downtown district, where the rising genre actor and area native Bishop Stevens<\/strong> (FINAL SUMMER, SALEM TUSK<\/strong>) has organized a red-carpet fundraiser. \u201cMeet Me at the Movies<\/strong>,\u201d<\/a><\/span> taking place this Saturday, September 10<\/strong>, is positioned as an annual event that will help non-profit and philanthropic groups service their own communities \u2013 the recipient of donations this year is the capital city\u2019s Garvey-Tubman Cultural Arts & Research Center<\/strong><\/a><\/span> \u2013 and is built around screenings of cinema in which Stevens has been involved. Oddly, the selections hail from other cities: Pens to Lens<\/strong> films at 1 p.m.<\/strong>, the darkly humorous short THE LAST DAY<\/strong> from Silver Compass Studios<\/strong> of Decatur<\/strong> at 7 p.m.<\/strong>, and, immediately following, the first downstate presentation to our knowledge of Shatterglass Films<\/strong>\u2019 REVEALER<\/strong> for the public. Daytime fare is geared to all ages and the evening show is decidedly for adults, as Fangoria<\/span><\/strong> was all too happy to reiterate<\/a><\/span> a couple of days ago.<\/p>\n Much closer to the Windy City, a reprise showing of Gorman Berchard<\/strong> and Fred Uhter<\/strong>\u2019s film on the late Urbana musician Jay Bennett<\/strong> is set for The Venue<\/span><\/strong> in Aurora<\/strong><\/span><\/a> at the same time. Uhter will be on hand to present WHERE ARE YOU, JAY BENNETT?<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at 7 p.m.<\/strong> on Saturday<\/strong>, after which Steve Dawson, Gerald Dowd<\/strong>, and Ben Clarke<\/strong> will perform a tribute concert by which to remember Bennett. Both Chicago<\/strong> and Springfield are solid drives from east central Illinois<\/strong>, we know, but please consider attending these events to show your support and interest. It does<\/em> bring up the question as to why BENNETT<\/strong> and REVEALER<\/strong> have not played yet in Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>, and they aren\u2019t the only recent productions of downstate relation to be AWOL in the communal event spaces of C-U. Are there any promoters out there who are willing to fill the indigenous video void? Does your humble editor have to put on his non-humble hard hat and march down there from the house on the edge of an American small town to right wrongs? Don\u2019t coerce me into taking care of business you should be willing to handle yourselves, friends.
