First, if <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Normal Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.normaltheater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one looks at the next few weeks\u2019 worth of play dates<\/a><\/span> at the <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Normal<\/strong>, one might feel an echo of what the C-U has lost since the <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> shut down three years ago last week. The consecutive openings of acclaimed indie films \u2013 <strong>SOMETHING IN THE DIRT<\/strong> this weekend, <strong>DECISION TO LEAVE<\/strong> next weekend, <strong>TRIANGLE OF SADNESS<\/strong> the weekend after that \u2013 may all be first-run premieres in our area, and we thank the Normal in advance for bringing back <strong>David Bowie<\/strong> and <strong>MOONAGE DAYDREAM<\/strong> after <strong>Thanksgiving<\/strong>. And then, since their e-mail blasts haven\u2019t let us forget it as of late, we\u2019ll share that the <a title=\"Savoy 16 + IMAX :: Phoenix Theatres Entertainment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixtheatres.com\/location\/2358\/Savoy-16---IMAX-Showtimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Phoenix Savoy 16 + IM<span style=\"color: #800000;\">AX<\/span><\/strong> in <strong>Savoy<\/strong><\/span><\/a> now has \u201cThe Village Bar\u201d for customers to look forward to if they need libations to go with their motion picture viewing. Finally, the <strong>Onarga Theater<\/strong> in <strong>Onarga<\/strong> has not shown a movie since <strong>WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING<\/strong> in August; hopefully, this is just an extended break for the owners and staff and not closure, given <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Onarga Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/onargatheater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this house was the last one in our general area to open back up for business<\/a><\/span> after the pandemic forced their industry to shut down. Crossing fingers!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>November 1-3, 1997:<\/em> <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> Ph.D. candidate <strong>Grace Giorgio<\/strong>, recently transplanted from <strong>San Francisco<\/strong> to Urbana, and <strong>Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant<\/strong> manager <strong>Eric Fisher<\/strong>, an avid cartoonist and <strong>Decatur<\/strong> native, launch the <strong>Champaign-Urbana Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> on campus to showcase wild independent cinema from across the country. Opening night takes place in the auditorium of the <strong>Noyes Laboratory of Chemistry<\/strong> building on the UI <strong>Main Quad<\/strong>, anchored by the black-and-white crime film <strong>RUNNING TIME<\/strong> and personal appearances by its producer\/director <strong>Josh Becker<\/strong> and star <strong>Bruce Campbell<\/strong>. Two dozen shorts are presented between this event and subsequent shows the next two evenings at the <strong>Channing-Murray Foundation<\/strong> chapel, located two blocks away from Noyes.
