First, if one looks at the next few weeks\u2019 worth of play dates<\/a><\/span> at the Normal Theater<\/strong> in downtown Normal<\/strong>, one might feel an echo of what the C-U has lost since the Art Theater<\/strong> shut down three years ago last week. The consecutive openings of acclaimed indie films \u2013 SOMETHING IN THE DIRT<\/strong> this weekend, DECISION TO LEAVE<\/strong> next weekend, TRIANGLE OF SADNESS<\/strong> the weekend after that \u2013 may all be first-run premieres in our area, and we thank the Normal in advance for bringing back David Bowie<\/strong> and MOONAGE DAYDREAM<\/strong> after Thanksgiving<\/strong>. And then, since their e-mail blasts haven\u2019t let us forget it as of late, we\u2019ll share that the Phoenix Savoy 16 + IMAX<\/span><\/strong> in Savoy<\/strong><\/span><\/a> now has \u201cThe Village Bar\u201d for customers to look forward to if they need libations to go with their motion picture viewing. Finally, the Onarga Theater<\/strong> in Onarga<\/strong> has not shown a movie since WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING<\/strong> in August; hopefully, this is just an extended break for the owners and staff and not closure, given this house was the last one in our general area to open back up for business<\/a><\/span> after the pandemic forced their industry to shut down. Crossing fingers!<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n 25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 November 1-3, 1997:<\/em> University of Illinois<\/strong> Ph.D. candidate Grace Giorgio<\/strong>, recently transplanted from San Francisco<\/strong> to Urbana, and Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant<\/strong> manager Eric Fisher<\/strong>, an avid cartoonist and Decatur<\/strong> native, launch the Champaign-Urbana Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> on campus to showcase wild independent cinema from across the country. Opening night takes place in the auditorium of the Noyes Laboratory of Chemistry<\/strong> building on the UI Main Quad<\/strong>, anchored by the black-and-white crime film RUNNING TIME<\/strong> and personal appearances by its producer\/director Josh Becker<\/strong> and star Bruce Campbell<\/strong>. Two dozen shorts are presented between this event and subsequent shows the next two evenings at the Channing-Murray Foundation<\/strong> chapel, located two blocks away from Noyes. Freaky would \u201cfreak the hicks\u201d annually for three more Halloween<\/strong> seasons, first at the just-opened Canopy Club<\/strong> in Urbana and then at the New Art Theatre<\/strong> in Champaign.
