To us, IFV has a special place in campus film and a lively IFV is a healthy IFV. Don\u2019t let it flicker away, young friends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>55 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>Tuesday, April 2, 1968:<\/em> <strong>The Uptown Theater<\/strong> in <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, hosts the world premiere of <strong>MGM<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cultimate trip,\u201d <strong>2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY<\/strong>, after nearly three years in production. Moviegoers in the house are left stunned by the film, borne of a collaboration between meticulous director <strong>Stanley Kubrick<\/strong> and renowned science fiction author <strong>Arthur C. Clarke<\/strong>, due to its groundbreaking visual effects, canny use of classical music, and radical avoidance of \u201csci-fi\u201d and <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> narrative clich\u00e9. Based on Clarke\u2019s 1950 novella \u201c<strong>The Sentinel<\/strong>,\u201d <strong>2001<\/strong> depicts mankind\u2019s encounters with glassy monoliths planted in myriad corners of our galaxy; astronauts played by <strong>Keir Dullea<\/strong> and <strong>Gary Lockwood<\/strong> journey to one such site on the starship <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Discovery<\/span> and must contend not only with the implications of alien intelligence but also rebellion by the onboard computer, HAL 9000, enigmatically voiced by <strong>Douglas Rain<\/strong>. In one of several soon-to-be-iconic sequences, David Bowman (Dullea) lowers himself into HAL\u2019s machinery to shut down its memory bank. As the computer verbally regresses to its earliest interactions with humans, it restates one of its first sentences before going dead: \u201cGood afternoon, gentlemen. I am the HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. Lab in <strong>Urbana, Illinois<\/strong>, on the twelfth of January, 1992.\u201d Although many have presumed this dialogue is a nod to the long history of computer technology innovation at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong>, Clarke himself <a title=\"\u2018Happy birthday, Hal\u2019 by Mark Caro :: The Chicago Tribune\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/lifestyles\/books\/chi-hal-birthday-2001-space-odyssey-20120606-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">clarified in a 1992 interview<\/span><\/a> for the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chicago Tribune<\/span><\/strong> that he cited Urbana as a tribute to a former math professor of his, <strong>George C. McVittie<\/strong>, who was <a title=\"George C. McVittie @ Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_C._McVittie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">head of the UIUC astronomy department<\/span><\/a> at the time of production. In the best-selling novelization, written by Clarke and an uncredited Kubrick parallel to the film\u2019s development, HAL instead notes January 1997 as its activation date.
