(Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_macguffin_issues_JPset.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even though <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Calendar: March 24-30, 2023 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=15145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we shared our handy <strong>Confidential Almanac<\/strong> entries<\/a><\/span> on these topics a few weeks ago, I decided to not let their milestones go by without a few fresh comments. Has any single day in recorded <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> history been more fortified with movie achievement than <strong>March 28, 1973<\/strong>, when different groups of <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> students released the first issue of a cinema journal, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong>, and premiered a feature-length action comedy, <strong>SHOT<\/strong>, in the space of less than twenty-four hours? I\u2019d argue the one-two debut was probably the nascent beginning of homegrown creation in this realm that amounted to something, no matter what had been attempted or enjoyed in the C-U up until then.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unfortunately, not much has been made of either since their creators slaved hard with limited means and production knowledge to put out the most readable\/watchable media expression that they could. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"C-U Confidential #10 :: \u2018Periodicals du C-U\u2019 page @ C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?page_id=144\/#cuc10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We gave <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong> a spotlight in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Confidential<\/span> #10<\/strong><\/a><\/span> thanks to the insight of then-UI undergraduate <strong>James Hall<\/strong>, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"SHOT BD provides thud-filled rush :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yours truly reviewed the <strong>Vinegar Syndrome<\/strong> re-release of <strong>SHOT<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on Blu-ray and DVD when it entered their catalog in mid-2018. To my knowledge, other than a public screening idea being contemplated behind the scenes by a good friend of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong>, there are no plans by any citizens du C-U to do anything for the occasion. I can\u2019t tell you how badly I feel my hands are tied in regards to these anniversaries and a few more significant dates in the near future, given that I don\u2019t have immediate plans to move back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The best I can do through <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> is encourage <em>you<\/em>, <em>you<\/em>, and <em>you<\/em> to explore our world in film through stories, reprints, links, and whatever else can be shared virtually. It\u2019s up to my former neighbors to be hands on and make something of it for the community today. Nothing lasts forever, though, even when it\u2019s revived. During the week we ran the Almanacs, I confirmed with a contact at Vinegar Syndrome, which specializes in preserving obscure and cult cinema for multi-platform viewing, that <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"SHOT Blu-ray\/DVD set :: Vinegar Syndrome\" href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/shot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their disc of <strong>SHOT<\/strong> will go out of print<\/a><\/span> later in 2023; this should coincide with the film being dropped by the <strong>American Genre Film Archive<\/strong> for theatrical rentals and <strong>Tubi<\/strong> for ad-supported free streaming. Don\u2019t let the \u201dpigs\u201d Ross and Wilson get any more peeved by missing out on their exploits \u2013 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"SHOT @ Tubi\" href=\"https:\/\/tubitv.com\/movies\/515978\/shot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">take your <strong>SHOT<\/strong> today<\/a><\/span>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Loose cannon detective Ross (Richard C. In that respect, we should be fortunate the <strong>Student Life and Culture Archives<\/strong> and the <strong>Literature and Languages Library<\/strong> on the UIUC campus decided to retain copies of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong> and related materials for their collection. It\u2019s discussed even less often than <strong>SHOT<\/strong>, which <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Ebertfest director Kohn\u2019s film career began at Illinois\u2019 by Lauren Provencher :: College of Media, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/media.illinois.edu\/ebertfest-director-kohn-film-career-illinois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">receives the occasional mention from producer <strong>Nate Kohn<\/strong> in interviews<\/a><\/span> and garnered a handful of respectable critiques from online writers seeing it for the first time thanks to Vinegar Syndrome, and I have yet to find any sort of modern analysis or recollection outside of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUZine<\/span><\/strong>. Film societies and filmmaking groups have come and gone from the RSO roster since at least the 1940s, yet <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong> is easily the most distinct ephemera to show us in the present how young people at UI regarded the cinema during their formative years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Without acting as flies on the walls of modern classrooms, how can we find out what film means in the formative years of today\u2019s collegiate learners? Tonight, <strong>Thursday, April 27<\/strong>, <strong>Illinois State University<\/strong> debuts the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Foxtail Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxtailfilmfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Foxtail Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at the <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Normal<\/strong> starting at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> by discussing the craft with ISU alums and professional filmmakers <strong>Doug Spilotro<\/strong> and <strong>Griffin Hammond<\/strong>; tomorrow\u2019s <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> show will present ISU student films and Saturday\u2019s<strong> 7 p.m.<\/strong> finale will be a competition program with work by students enrolled at ISU and elsewhere. In Urbana, the UI <strong>Spurlock Museum of World Cultures<\/strong> will host a pair of similar events one week apart, the annual <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"UIUC Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uiucfilmfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>UIUC Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> tomorrow, <strong>Friday, April 28<\/strong>, and the new <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Inaugural MACS Student Showcase to celebrate student media production projects\u2019 by Kelly Youngblood :: College of Media, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/media.illinois.edu\/inaugural-macs-student-showcase-celebrate-student-media-production-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MACS Student Showcase<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday, May 6<\/strong>, both organized through the <strong>College of Media<\/strong>. Consult the activity calendars of institutes near you for more opportunities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Happily, my delay in posting this piece when it should have gone live on the 50th anniversary of <strong>SHOT<\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong> a month ago means that its appearance today is timely in a different way that still matters. We all follow various personalities in film, television, and media who&#8217;ve earned many credits but have deleted their earliest work from professional resumes for whatever reasons. In my less-humble-than-usual opinion, there is little harm in referencing your start as long as you\u2019re learning, achieving, sharing, and moving forward.
