I had a gut feeling <a title=\"Carl W. Pellow, Jr., 1948-2022 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=15279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">we would be losing my stepfather <strong>Carl<\/strong><\/span><\/a> at some point in 2022, yet I hardly expected that <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Patricia A. Pellow, 1943-2022 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=15290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my mother <strong>Pat<\/strong> would follow<\/a><\/span> so close behind. I\u2019m still hurting in the wake of their deaths and have been weighed down by my responsibilities as an executor, wage earner, and not-quite homeowner. I technically don\u2019t get a break and, as one of several concessions, I\u2019ve been limited in how much time and effort can be spent on Confidential or anything \u201cfun\u201d that requires a substantial effort. This defeated all of my attempts at creating content over the late fall and winter but, here in the middle of 2023, I\u2019ve managed to resume my writing. It gives me purpose and focuses me on the constructive. It also opens valuable small windows to follow through with some of the material I wanted to post for you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the end of 2021, I put together the first article for an annual series in which I\u2019d pay tribute to those who\u2019ve passed away and had contributed to the local film culture or touched our <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> world. Of course, I intended to compile a follow-up but I didn\u2019t want to do a halfhearted job on it when my undivided attention and breaking heart needed to be present elsewhere. I\u2019m happy to finally share that piece with you, belated as it may be, for it doesn\u2019t feel \u201clate\u201d as if I had scratched it out in, say, the first week of February instead of the end of December. Now is the right time for it, dearest readers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\u2026and Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa, IL, in the fall. For example, several community members from C-U have recently posted about <strong>David Monk<\/strong>, the late prairie activist and conservationist, and were obviously inspired by <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Bench dedication part of celebration of prairie preservationist's life\u2019 by Mary Schenk :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/newsletter\/content\/daily_headlines\/bench-dedication-part-of-celebration-of-prairie-preservationists-life\/article_902c4853-f169-5016-b69e-7bafb36f50c3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the warm-weather gatherings held in his memory on <strong>May 20<\/strong><\/a><\/span> near <strong>St. Joseph<\/strong> and <strong>Monticello<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This also goes for individuals we didn\u2019t know personally but whose lives, careers, and artistic output we may have followed from afar. Even if the film director, actor, and <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> historian <strong>Peter Bogdanovich<\/strong> is gone, we can enjoy his cinematic voice and study his narrative approach in his own words by sitting down with his work, such as on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"TARGETS :: The Criterion Collection\" href=\"https:\/\/www.criterion.com\/films\/29965-targets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the new Blu-ray of his feature debut, <strong>TARGETS<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, released on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Wherever I look, the evidence keeps appearing. In the last few days, I\u2019ve caught pining on social media from folks who are still feeling the large void left by our mutual friends, <strong>Stephen Swords<\/strong> and <strong>Aaron Davidson<\/strong>, almost a year after their departure. Even in grief and pain, we can still give in order to heal. Tell that enlightening story. Share that unseen picture. Echo that signature truism. Tie together the details that help the rest of us emphasize; while pulling this together, I could not ignore that Bogdanovich and <strong>Carlos Anzelmo<\/strong> struggled with <strong>Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/strong> in their respective denouements as did our dear Carl. We can function better as humans and a society by channeling the best life lessons they have left behind.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I hope you\u2019ll finish this piece and visit the linked pages to get to know better those who made their mark on the cinema at large and the movies of <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond. Swords<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Remembering Stephen Swords\u2019 account @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stephen.swords.9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">67, July 19<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>A retired English professor who completed his career at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Swords was a ubiquitous elder presence at Champaign-Urbana coffee shops and night spots.
