Not many of them remain as compared to the industry\u2019s height in the 1950s and 1960s, yet the roughly 300 locations still in business for the 2023 season are doing the good deed of keeping this slice of Americana alive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today, they\u2019ll promote <strong>National Drive-in Day<\/strong>, celebrated on the date the first-ever drive-in opened in<strong> Pennsauken Township, New Jersey<\/strong>, and the 90th anniversary of the ozoner\u2019s legacy, as its owner and designer <strong>Richard Hollingshead, Jr.<\/strong>, premiered the concept on the night of <strong>Tuesday, June 6, 1933<\/strong>, when the <strong>Camden Drive-in Theatre<\/strong> presented a British comedy from <strong>MGM<\/strong> called <strong>WIVES BEWARE<\/strong>. Benefits have dwindled from the brief surge of ticket and concession sales they enjoyed during the pandemic, when moviegoers could watch a show and practice social distancing as a default, or <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018How the American Drive-In Staged a Comeback\u2019 by Elissaveta M. Nelson :: The Los Angeles Times\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/envelope\/cotown\/la-et-ct-drive-ins-digital-20130120-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was put upon by the studio system<\/a><\/span> to discard reel projection in favor of high-priced digital projectors. Can these rarefied souls behind the scenes ever catch a break in the simple quest to give their customers a good time and nice memories without emptying their pockets?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Heavy conundrums and rays of hope are explored in the most recent \u201cGoing Attractions\u201d film produced by Illinois native and <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> resident <strong>April Wright<\/strong>, <strong>BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN<\/strong>, which received sneak previews at select locations on National Drive-in Day a year ago, consistent bookings through the summer and fall of 2022, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN :: Going Attractions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goingattractions.com\/backtothedrivein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a digital VOD release on multiple platforms<\/a><\/span> as of <strong>Tuesday, March 14<\/strong>, courtesy of <strong>MPX<\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN :: Uncork\u2019d Entertainment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncorkedentertainment.com\/film\/back-to-the-drive-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Uncork\u2019d Entertainment<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. It is a direct follow-up to the first <strong>GOING ATTRACTIONS<\/strong> that addresses the fortunes of 11 theaters and their stewards, none of them cut from the same particular cloth, as they adjust to new realities in 2021 and an uncertain future. The Harvest Moon has a more prominent role in <strong>BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN<\/strong> than <strong>GOING ATTRACTIONS<\/strong> and it\u2019s neat to see co-operator <strong>Ben Harroun<\/strong> doing a live <strong>Facebook<\/strong> update at <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BACK-TO-THE DRIVE-IN trailer and VOD :: YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OoUTWJvpLXo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the beginning of the official trailer<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just as filmmaker Wright has gone above and beyond over the last decade to tell the stories of this quintessential American pastime and what once constituted \u201cthe movie-going experience,\u201d the Harroun brothers and their families and staff work hard to bring excitement to their events. Look over the website and you can feel the deliberate effort to infuse every weekend with a welcoming sense of fun. This includes outside-the-box thinking on how to use the drive-in grounds for other purposes, such as a late spring arts-and-crafts fair and an upcoming kids\u2019 carnival to raise funds for <strong>St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital<\/strong>, and is <em>exactly<\/em> the kind of creativity we\u2019d hope for from a locally-owned business. It radiates personality and fosters community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While hardly a walk in the park along the outskirts of Gibson City, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Calendar: December 9-15, 2022 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=15060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as Ben shared with <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> last year<\/a><\/span>, it\u2019s been worthwhile for the Harrouns so far. Their father <strong>Mike<\/strong>, who took a big swing in helping to revive the Harvest Moon in 1989, should be proud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On the receiving end of the flickering images cutting through the hazy summer air, we need to put our collective foot down with our dollars and sense if we want these theaters to continue. Find one or more online that float your boat and plan a trip with spending cash, plenty of gas, picnicking gear, and GPS directions on your phone. Check the listings carefully, though. Most drive-ins rely on first-run fare to pay the bills and satisfy the families, but some will program catalog titles on the off days or late in the season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It <em>is<\/em> unfortunate that few open-air houses dare to book genuine B-films that fully recall the classic drive-in aesthetic, but not everyone can be the <a title=\"The Mahoning Drive-In Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mahoningdit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Mahoning Drive-In Theate<span style=\"color: #800000;\">r<\/span><\/strong> in <strong>Leighton, Pennsylvania<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, either. To that end, we\u2019ll call it a wrap by <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Drive-in Movie Theater 90th Anniversary Promo\u2019 :: \u2018April 9 Entertainment\u2019 channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MvtRHhgCiLA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linking to a new PSA collaboration<\/a><\/span> between AuthenticDriveIns.com and Wright\u2019s <strong>April 9 Entertainment<\/strong> in honor of National Drive-in Day that features the popular cult-film slingers of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"THE LAST DRIVE-IN with Joe Bob Briggs :: Shudder\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shudder.com\/series\/watch\/the-last-drive-in-with-joe-bob-briggs\/d7e1edc651c7f9b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>THE LAST DRIVE-IN<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on the <strong>Shudder<\/strong> network, Joe Bob Briggs (<strong>John Bloom<\/strong>) and Darcy the Mail Girl (<strong>Diana Prince<\/strong>). Why? Because, according to them, the drive-in will <em>never<\/em> die. Oof.) <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"World Drive-in Jamboree :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/joebobsjamboree.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hit it here for more information<\/a><\/span> on attending and submitting your films.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> Despite my personal vote that drive-in theaters should stick around if there is any justice (and a livable outdoor environment) in the coming years, I\u2019ve had very little interaction with them up until now, even the ones I happened to live by over my lifetime. Maybe I\u2019ll tell you about it on ND-ID next June. Maybe I\u2019ll also get it together and, you know, take my own advice. Who\u2019s riding shotgun?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.3<\/em> That said, I haven\u2019t felt the good conscience to regularly go out and do fun-time things in the last few years given my circumstance. That\u2019s sad, considering the <strong>Route 34 Drive-in<\/strong> is less than 20 miles from <strong>Momkoke Manor<\/strong> and the second-closest theater to me after (bleh) a shoebox <strong>AMC<\/strong>. I haven\u2019t gone there yet and I\u2019ll be fortunate if I can finally check it out. No films have been shown in <strong>Earlville<\/strong> this year and their website is down, but a cryptic message posted to <strong>Facebook<\/strong> on <strong>June 4<\/strong> implies the family is intending to reopen. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> sends best wishes to them in making the appropriate decisions, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The Route 34 Drive In\u2019 :: \u2018John Sweeney\u2019 channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Sq9EVk3ugzI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here is a video by <strong>John Sweeney<\/strong> that I found<\/a><\/span> in which <strong>Ron Magnoni, Jr.<\/strong>, talks about running the Route 34.
