The Report<\/strong> has been put through the informational ringer as of late, so I\u2019d like to lighten the load today. First, I finally bore witness to a \u201cCamp Chasenshep\u201d vs. \u201cCamp Silverlake\u201d encounter on Monday\u2019s episode<\/a><\/span> of \u201cChase & Shep<\/strong>\u201d wherein Chase Todd<\/strong> and Aaron Sheppard<\/strong> interview FINAL SUMMER<\/strong>\u2019s John Isberg<\/strong> about all things filmmaking; it kicks off a five-week run on C&S\u2019s \u201cMondays for the Mind<\/strong>\u201d in which the dudes will have conversations with all five segment directors of the upcoming anthology F\u2019D: TALES FROM THE END TIMES<\/strong><\/a><\/span> from Horror-Fix Films<\/strong> of Springfield<\/strong>. Second, the C&S contemporaries at Camp Nostalgic Studios<\/span><\/strong> of Champaign<\/strong><\/span><\/a> have returned with a new series of \u201cSaturday Morning<\/strong>,\u201d a sketch program that plays to the group\u2019s interests in comedy and music; in this episode, creators Dave Rediger<\/strong> and Alex Duquette<\/strong> check in after six months of camping (!?)<\/a><\/span> to taste-test libations with pop culture origins and break for various legitimate and satiric promotions. Appearing briefly are Gela Rediger, Stephanie Gallela<\/strong>, and other talents from their camp. Did I mention, er, \u201ccamp?\u201d<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n Third, I forget that University of Illinois<\/strong> alumnus and former \u201cEbertfest<\/strong>\u201d volunteer Blake Stubbs<\/strong> is a movie reviewer on WGN Radio<\/strong> in Chicago<\/strong>; he recently joined the legendary Windy City deejay John Landecker<\/strong> on the weekday prime time show<\/a><\/span> to share his thoughts on INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY<\/strong> and other upcoming Hollywood<\/strong> hits, fulfilling his on-air nickname of \u201cBlockbuster Blake\u201d with authority. (One wonders what criterion he might use to qualify a movie as a \u201cBlakebuster.\u201d Just asking.) Fourth and final, I listened last night to the livestream Web show \u201cReaper\u2019s Underground<\/strong>,\u201d<\/a><\/span> hosted by the death metal musician and horror aficionado \u201cReaper<\/strong>\u201d of Omaha, Nebraska<\/strong>, in which he Zoomed with the cast and crew of Acrostar Films<\/span><\/strong>\u2019 ATTACK OF THE CORN ZOMBIES<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for a very pleasant hour of indie film banter. There is a fun fellow underneath the duochrome makeup and I thought he was generous in how he led the Acrostar family through all the expected talking points<\/a><\/span>. Queue up any combination of these programs over the weekend and you\u2019re guaranteed to have a good time.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n 25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 July 1998:<\/em> Columbia College of Chicago<\/strong> student Melissa Schmitt<\/strong> and her crew spend three consecutive weekends at Ned Kelly\u2019s Steakhouse<\/strong> on N. Cunningham Avenue<\/strong> in Urbana<\/strong> to film her thesis project, OPEN TO CLOSE<\/strong>, much of their efforts taking place after business hours in the dead of night. Schmitt, a transplant to the area whose father helps run the restaurant, cast local talent to act in her short, which explores the strained relationship between budding moviemaker Rosie Powe (Gemma Wall<\/strong>) and her manager father Rob (Mark Alan Hudson<\/strong>) as they muscle through a hectic evening shift together. MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> editor Jason Pankoke<\/strong> serves as a production assistant and set photographer during the shoot, the first of its kind that he either witnesses or takes part in as a Champaign<\/strong> resident. While her 16mm print most likely hit the closet shelf for good after grading, Schmitt has since built a career in social issue reporting<\/span><\/a> as a journalist and short-form content creator; she currently works as a senior producer<\/span><\/a> for the Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, based firm Long Story Short Media<\/strong> and lives in Maryland<\/strong> with her family.
