Well then, dearest readers, you\u2019ve come to the right <strong>Calendar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What gets our goat at present is the dangerous and blatant overreach that some quarters of our American society are constantly attempting in order to suppress or silence others. The efforts come in all shapes and sizes and the perpetrators can ascribe to any party or belief system, although<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Ron DeSantis\u2019 War on Freedom\u2019 by David Corn :: Mother Jones \" href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/03\/ron-desantis-war-on-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the strongest push by far is clearly coming from one side of the aisle<\/a><\/span> with a vengeance. I\u2019m sure that many of you caught the news of discord in tiny <strong>Marion, Kansas<\/strong>, where <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Small Kansas paper raided by police has a history of hard-hitting reporting\u2019 by Danielle Kaye :: NPR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/19\/1194780239\/kansas-paper-raid-marion-profile-local-journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a police raid on the assets of the weekly <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Marion County Record<\/span><\/strong> was conducted on shaky grounds<\/a><\/span> and almost forced the newspaper to stop publishing. Editor <strong>Eric Meyer<\/strong>, the co-owner of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Record<\/span> with his 98-year-old mother <strong>Joan<\/strong>, who passed away the day after <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u201898-year-old woman confronts police raiding her home' :: CNN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/us\/2023\/08\/22\/marion-county-record-joan-meyer-vpx.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the police also raided <em>her<\/em> home<\/a><\/span>, is a former professor of journalism at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> in <strong>Urbana<\/strong> and clearly knows the protections afforded the press by state and national laws. A few days after the <strong>August 11<\/strong> incident, a <strong>Marion County<\/strong> attorney declared the search warrant, executed by the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Marion County Police chief left KCPD under investigation and facing a demotion\u2019 by Brian Ellison and Zach Wilson :: KCUR 89.3 FM\/NPR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/podcast\/up-to-date\/2023-08-18\/marion-county-police-chief-left-kcpd-under-investigation-and-facing-a-demotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">newly-hired police chief <strong>Gideon Cody<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, was based on insufficient evidence of alleged wrongdoing by Meyer or his staff members. Their materials have since been returned and a drive of data, illegally copied from a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Record<\/span> computer by Cody\u2019s department, was ordered to be destroyed. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Sheriff\u2019s office agrees to destroy evidence obtained from raid on Kansas newspaper\u2019 by Sherman Smith :: Kansas Reflector\" href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/2023\/08\/24\/altered-evidence-list-indicates-marion-police-kept-illegal-copy-of-evidence-from-kansas-newspaper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don\u2019t they look excited?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"IOW: Eight arms to ixnay you :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=3239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As a one-time layout designer some 20 years ago<\/a><\/span> at a weekly alternative paper that was published in the heart of <strong>Champaign<\/strong>, I bore witness behind the scenes to how my coworkers on the content front had to navigate issues brought up every now and then by community members, political figures, business leaders, or other local organizations about something appearing in our pages. Nobody gets everything right despite the best efforts made and it is an art form to make amends while holding one\u2019s ground as a passionate and independent collective voice, yet it was rare to see my friends work through headaches that weren\u2019t brought on by the standard stresses of the free press: deadlines, late submissions, tech issues, uncooperative sources, cash flow compromises, and so on. To my knowledge, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Octopus<\/span><\/strong> never suffered anything as full-scale and dramatic as a raid by law enforcement \u2013 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Eight arms to hold you: an oral history of The Octopus\u2019 by Joel Gillespie :: The Octopus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/culture\/the_octopus_an_oral_history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being bum rushed by new ownership on short notice is a different kind of raid<\/a><\/span>, to be honest, so we\u2019ll tuck that one away for later scrutiny \u2013 and bully for Eric Meyer as he stayed collected and did the needful things to protect his publication. Hopefully, they will be compensated and justice served in memory of Joan Meyer, who still worked in limited capacity and had been with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Record<\/span> <em>since the 1960s<\/em>. An honorable record, indeed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Don\u2019t forget that select shows at select theaters near us will cost only $4.00 on <strong>Sunday, August 27<\/strong>, as part of <strong>National Cinema Day<\/strong> sponsored by the <strong>Cinema Foundation<\/strong>, the <strong>National Association of Theater Owners<\/strong>, and others. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"National Cinema Day :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalcinemaday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The searchable database on the home page of the NCD website<\/a><\/span> tells us the <strong>AMC Champaign 13<\/strong>, the <strong>Phoenix Savoy 16 + IMAX<\/strong>, the <strong>AMC Classic Decatur 10<\/strong>, the <strong>AMC Starplex Normal 14<\/strong>, and the <strong>Marcus Bloomington Cinema + IMAX<\/strong> are participating.
