You\u2019ll see listings and links immediately below for the second <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"CU International Film Festival :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cuiff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CU International Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, an inspirational short film showcase from local high school senior <strong>Max Libman<\/strong> and company, at the UI <strong>Spurlock Museum<\/strong> this <strong>Saturday, March 2<\/strong>, starting at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> with tickets available on-site starting at <strong>6 p.m.<\/strong>, as well as the anim\u00e9 celebration at the UI <strong>Illini Union<\/strong>, <strong>UI-CON<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Inaugural UI Con is not to be missed\u2019 by Jessica Hammie :: Smile Politely\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/culture\/inaugural-ui-con-is-not-to-be-missed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organized and hosted by <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> students<\/a><\/span> connected with a long-running RSO, the <strong>Japanese Animation Club<\/strong>, lasting all day Saturday and <strong>Sunday, March 3<\/strong>, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"UI-Con :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ui-con.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free to attend for the campus community and general public<\/a><\/span>. We also finally spotted a submission deadline of <strong>Friday, April 12<\/strong>, for the enrolled UI populace to enter their work for possible inclusion in the next <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"UIUC Student Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uiucfilmfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UIUC Student Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, which is slated to take place two weeks later on <strong>Friday, April 26<\/strong>, at <strong>Knight Auditorium<\/strong> in Spurlock where the CUIFF is holding court tomorrow. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Foxtail Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxtailfilmfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There is also the <strong>Foxtail Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, arranged by faculty and adjuncts over at <strong>Illinois State University<\/strong> for the second year running, which has a late deadline of next <strong>Friday, March 8<\/strong>, for accepting submissions from high school and college students in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Foxtail Film Festival @ FilmFreeway\" href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/FoxtailFilmFestival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several categories as listed on <strong>FilmFreeway<\/strong><\/a><\/span>; Foxtail events are scheduled to run from <strong>Thursday, April 25<\/strong>, through <strong>Sunday, April 28<\/strong>, with the screenings at the <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Normal<\/strong>. We\u2019ll <em>all<\/em> need a spring break after this. Whew!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>Wednesday, March 3, 1999:<\/em> Operating out of a studio-office situated near downtown <strong>Champaign, Illinois<\/strong>, <strong>Opteryx Press<\/strong> puts its spin on independent film discourse to paper for the first time with the release of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM: The Warning Shot<\/span><\/strong>. The letter-size, 12-page \u2018zine is a copy shop creation with a teal cover that serves as a low-budget teaser for the upcoming <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong>, \u201cThe Magazine of Personal Cinema in Action.\u201d Novice self-publisher <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong> draws the content from his recent interactions with participants in the American \u201cfilm festival circuit\u201d as well as science-fiction and horror fandom; interview subjects include <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Scary Monsters Magazine<\/span><\/strong> publisher <strong>Dennis Druktenis<\/strong> from the <strong>Chicago<\/strong> suburb of <strong>Highwood<\/strong>, <strong>Oregon<\/strong>-based stop-motion animator <strong>Suzanne Twining<\/strong>, and filmmaker and photographer <strong>Brien Burroughs<\/strong> of <strong>San Francisco<\/strong>. Short subjects created by the latter two were introduced to a Champaign-Urbana audience during the first <strong>Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> in 1997. \u201cMany of the films in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> will be raw and unpolished,\u201d writes Pankoke in a \u201cSave the Mirth\u201d editorial. \u201cSome will be experimental and abstract. Most will be far from perfect, at least according to the standards of mainstream critics and cinema historians. However, all belong to the century-old history of motion picture making, and this history deserves to be fleshed out by recording what is going on in the grassroots, the backyards, and the underground.
