First up is this weekend\u2019s iteration of the <strong>Immersion Festival<\/strong> at the recently opened <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Gallery Art Bar :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.galleryartbarurbana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gallery Art Bar<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in downtown Urbana on <strong>Saturday, September 7<\/strong>, and <strong>Sunday, September 8<\/strong>; co-founder <strong>Jake Metz<\/strong> discussed with <strong>Jessica Hammie<\/strong> of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Smile Politely<\/span> <\/strong>what\u2019s in store for the show, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Immersion Fest is an experimental music and arts festival you don\u2019t want to miss\u2019 by Jessica Hammie :: Smile Politely\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/music\/immersion-fest-is-an-experimental-music-and-arts-festival-you-dont-want-to-miss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which showcases the collaborations of audio, video, and musical artists from across the country in what becomes a multidisciplinary playground<\/a><\/span>, and his hopes for future expansion of the project. One can experience Immersion Fest with a blank slate of expectations or <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Immersion Festival :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/immersionfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read about all the performers online<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also coming to Gallery Art Bar is a new event called the <strong>217 Film Festival<\/strong>, which is set for <strong>Thursday, September 19, 9 p.m.<\/strong>, and still accepting submissions of shorts running no longer than 15 minutes through the end of the day on <strong>Monday, September 9<\/strong>; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Half House Studios :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/halfhousestudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Half House Studios<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, a music label and concert promoter based in the C-U, is branching out with 217 and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Half House Studios @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100078048586500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a QR code posted to their <strong>Facebook<\/strong> account<\/a><\/span> will take filmmakers to a submission form they can fill out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And still feeling so close yet situated so far away, C-U native <strong>Tristan Duke<\/strong> continues his investigation of creating large-scale photographic images through unconventional means from his home base of southern <strong>California<\/strong> to the wilds of the <strong>Arctic Circle<\/strong>; an e-mail blast received this week at <strong>MFHQ Deux<\/strong> goes through his upcoming doings such as a solo exhibit, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Glacial Optics\u2019 by Tristan Duke :: SITE Santa Fe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sitesantafe.org\/en\/exhibitions\/tristan-duke-glacial-optics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201c<strong>Glacial Optics<\/strong>,\u201d<\/a><\/span> opening on <strong>Friday, September 27<\/strong>, at <strong>SITE Santa Fe<\/strong> in <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>, and works appearing in group shows at both the <strong>Los Angeles Central Library<\/strong> and <strong>Los Angeles County Museum of Art<\/strong> in the fall. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Tristan Duke :: Portfolio Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tristanduke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duke\u2019s process involves the design and construction of self-made cameras utilizing atypical elements to capture images<\/a><\/span> \u2013 in the instance of \u201cGlacial Optics,\u201d fashioning his lenses from glacier ice in <strong>Alaska<\/strong> to photograph the environment his resource came from.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>IMAGERY DU C-U | Picturing Our Scene on the Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What, you thought it would be yet <em>another<\/em> reference to that <em>other<\/em> world-renowned 1954 black-and-white <strong>Toho Company<\/strong> production? The 4K restoration of <strong>Akira Kurosawa<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>SEVEN SAMURAI<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"SEVEN SAMURAI :: Janus Films\" href=\"https:\/\/www.janusfilms.com\/films\/1015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distributed by<strong> Janus Films<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, storms the <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong> on <strong>September 6, 7<\/strong>, and <strong>13<\/strong>, all at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong>, and <strong>September 15<\/strong> at <strong>1 p.m.<\/strong> Go see it on the big screen where it and so many other indisputable world classics belong. If you have to drive long-distance for the pleasure, plan ahead; we know the <strong>Virginia Theatre\/<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> line-up of <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> chestnuts gets vanilla at times \u2013 we\u2019ll tip our hat to them for booking <strong>Robert Altman<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>THE LONG GOODBYE<\/strong> on <strong>September 21<\/strong>, a nice surprise there \u2013 and the overall lack of an <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> for art cinema in the C-U has already gotten old. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"SEVEN SAMURAI :: The Criterion Collection\" href=\"https:\/\/www.criterion.com\/films\/165-seven-samurai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In November<\/a><\/span>, the <strong>Criterion Collection<\/strong> will issue <strong>SEVEN SAMURAI<\/strong> on UHD, which carries over extras including a commentary that features the former <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> film professor <strong>David Desser<\/strong>, as well as <strong>GODZILLA<\/strong> (gotcha!),<strong> FUNNY FACE, PAPER MOON, THE SHAPE OF WATER<\/strong>, the 1932 version of <strong>SCARFACE<\/strong>, and the Japanese folk horror <strong>DEMON POND<\/strong>.
