Our dearest creatures know well enough to research their <strong>Halloween<\/strong> delights \u2013 well, the public-facing delights, anyway \u2013 in the <strong>Calendar<\/strong> below, and we\u2019ll get back to it on the flip side. A big \u201cboo!\u201d to all of you as the creepy season winds down!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>IMAGERY DU C-U | Picturing Our Scene on the Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, we\u2019ve learned about a couple of indie frights recently that are tangential to the C-U. One is <strong>HAUNT SEASON<\/strong>, a slasher set in a haunted house that apparently is an atypical take on the scenario that emphasizes characterization and drama over the visceral. Directed by <strong>Jake Jarvi<\/strong> and filmed in the real-life <strong>Realm of Terrors<\/strong> attraction in the north <strong>Chicago<\/strong> suburb of <strong>Round Lake Beach<\/strong>, <strong>HAUNT SEASON<\/strong> was <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"HAUNT SEASON :: Epic Pictures\" href=\"https:\/\/epic-pictures.com\/film\/haunt-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released to VOD by <strong>Dread\/Epic Pictures<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on <strong>October 8<\/strong> and will be given a rare theatrical screening this <strong>Sunday, October 27, 4 p.m.<\/strong>, at the <strong>Phoenix Savoy 16 + IMAX<\/strong> by the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Chambana Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chambanafilmfestival.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chambana Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, who plan to have participants from the film in attendance. This will be the last CFF show before their annual <strong>Lake County Film Festival<\/strong> takes over the <strong>College of Lake County<\/strong> campus in <strong>Grayslake<\/strong>, their opening night set for this coming <strong>Thursday, October 31<\/strong>, and runs for two consecutive weekends. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Lake County Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/lakecountyfilmfestival.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You can peruse their impressively loaded program right here<\/a><\/span> and should consider a trip to check it out in person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"HAUNT SEASON (Throughline Films\/Dread\/Epic Pictures)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR304_hauntseasonposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"664\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The other is <strong>CURSE OF THE SIN EATER<\/strong>, which to our C-U trained eyes was a surprise inclusion in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Six horror movies with ties to Champaign Co. to watch this Halloween\u2019 by Danny Connolly and Jared Thomas :: WCIA-TV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcia.com\/news\/six-horror-movies-with-ties-to-the-champaign-area-you-can-watch-this-halloween\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a \u201csuggested Halloween viewing\u201d bit carried by <strong>WCIA-TV<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and other media outlets in the region. All the other films in the piece, offered up by the<strong> Champaign County Film Office<\/strong> and <strong>Flyover Film Studios<\/strong> with the intention of promoting local production, have been talked about to some degree on <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong>: <strong>BLACK MOLD, FINAL SUMMER, REVEALER, BROOKLYN 45<\/strong>, and <strong>SLICE<\/strong>. The distinction to be made here is the latter two, along with <strong>SIN EATER<\/strong>, are really Chicago\/land productions in which industry talents from central <strong>Illinois<\/strong> took part. We looked into it and <strong>SIN EATER<\/strong> is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"CURSE OF THE SIN EATER :: Samuel Goldwyn Films\" href=\"http:\/\/www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com\/curse-of-the-sin-eater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent VOD release from <strong>Samuel Goldwyn Films<\/strong><\/a><\/span> filmed in Chicago and <strong>Barrington Hills<\/strong> with an assist from <strong>Hoke Construction<\/strong> of <strong>Paxton<\/strong>; it involves a young construction worker (<strong>Carter Shrimp<\/strong>) who unwittingly inherits the manifestations of sins from a wealthy businessman (<strong>Larry Yando<\/strong>) after the latter passes; <strong>Elizabeth Laidlaw, Marcelo Wright<\/strong>, and <strong>REVEALER<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Shaina Schrooten<\/strong> also star in the tense-looking film, which was directed by <strong>Justin Denton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"CURSE OF THE SIN EATER (Samuel Goldwyn Films)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR304_sineaterposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"663\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, to fall back with reason on our long-standing \u201cset but not filmed in Illinois\u201d hang-up, we suggest to you one of the original and ultimate \u201cgateway horror\u201d classics, however flawed it seems in retrospect. In the next few weeks, we\u2019ll tell you how this movie and its source material contributed to the foundation of the study of the movies of Champaign, <strong>Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond. It may surprise you, or even shock you. Feel that chilly air? Not a coincidence at all.
