Our dearest creatures know well enough to research their Halloween<\/strong> delights \u2013 well, the public-facing delights, anyway \u2013 in the Calendar<\/strong> below, and we\u2019ll get back to it on the flip side. A big \u201cboo!\u201d to all of you as the creepy season winds down!<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n IMAGERY DU C-U | Picturing Our Scene on the Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n So, we\u2019ve learned about a couple of indie frights recently that are tangential to the C-U. One is HAUNT SEASON<\/strong>, a slasher set in a haunted house that apparently is an atypical take on the scenario that emphasizes characterization and drama over the visceral. Directed by Jake Jarvi<\/strong> and filmed in the real-life Realm of Terrors<\/strong> attraction in the north Chicago<\/strong> suburb of Round Lake Beach<\/strong>, HAUNT SEASON<\/strong> was released to VOD by Dread\/Epic Pictures<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on October 8<\/strong> and will be given a rare theatrical screening this Sunday, October 27, 4 p.m.<\/strong>, at the Phoenix Savoy 16 + IMAX<\/strong> by the Chambana Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, who plan to have participants from the film in attendance. This will be the last CFF show before their annual Lake County Film Festival<\/strong> takes over the College of Lake County<\/strong> campus in Grayslake<\/strong>, their opening night set for this coming Thursday, October 31<\/strong>, and runs for two consecutive weekends. You can peruse their impressively loaded program right here<\/a><\/span> and should consider a trip to check it out in person.<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n The other is CURSE OF THE SIN EATER<\/strong>, which to our C-U trained eyes was a surprise inclusion in a \u201csuggested Halloween viewing\u201d bit carried by WCIA-TV<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and other media outlets in the region. All the other films in the piece, offered up by the Champaign County Film Office<\/strong> and Flyover Film Studios<\/strong> with the intention of promoting local production, have been talked about to some degree on CUBlog<\/span><\/strong>: BLACK MOLD, FINAL SUMMER, REVEALER, BROOKLYN 45<\/strong>, and SLICE<\/strong>. The distinction to be made here is the latter two, along with SIN EATER<\/strong>, are really Chicago\/land productions in which industry talents from central Illinois<\/strong> took part. We looked into it and SIN EATER<\/strong> is a recent VOD release from Samuel Goldwyn Films<\/strong><\/a><\/span> filmed in Chicago and Barrington Hills<\/strong> with an assist from Hoke Construction<\/strong> of Paxton<\/strong>; it involves a young construction worker (Carter Shrimp<\/strong>) who unwittingly inherits the manifestations of sins from a wealthy businessman (Larry Yando<\/strong>) after the latter passes; Elizabeth Laidlaw, Marcelo Wright<\/strong>, and REVEALER<\/strong>\u2019s Shaina Schrooten<\/strong> also star in the tense-looking film, which was directed by Justin Denton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n Finally, to fall back with reason on our long-standing \u201cset but not filmed in Illinois\u201d hang-up, we suggest to you one of the original and ultimate \u201cgateway horror\u201d classics, however flawed it seems in retrospect. In the next few weeks, we\u2019ll tell you how this movie and its source material contributed to the foundation of the study of the movies of Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond. It may surprise you, or even shock you. Feel that chilly air? Not a coincidence at all. For, by the pricking of Ye Ed<\/strong>\u2019s thumbs\u2026<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n ~~~~~<\/p>\n A bonus for everyone who kept reading: WCIA also aired a short interview<\/a><\/span> early Friday, October 25<\/strong>, with veteran film director Dwight H. Little<\/strong> (HALLOWEEN 4, MARKED FOR DEATH<\/strong>), and we can only presume that it was intended to promote his memoir, Still Rolling<\/span><\/strong> (McFarland & Co.<\/strong>)<\/a><\/span>, even though the book was published more than a year ago. Still, seems like a friendly chap with a wealth of knowledge to impart; a more in-depth discussion<\/a><\/span> with Bee Delores<\/strong> of Bloody Disgusting<\/span><\/strong> from the beginning of the year will give you a better idea about Little\u2019s late-career outlook and ideals. He is still active in the industry; a new action film is in pre-production and a horror tale, NATTY KNOCKS<\/strong>, arrived last year via Vertical Entertainment<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n 10 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Friday, October 31, 2014:<\/em> Thanks to a resolution sponsored by representative Kay Hatcher<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the Illinois General Assembly<\/strong> has decreed today \u201cSvengoolie\/Rich Koz Day<\/strong>\u201d in the state of Illinois<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The veteran entertainer will make several media and personal appearances<\/span><\/a> in celebration, while his (presumably prerecorded) alter ego appears all day long on national cable network MeTV<\/strong>.
