You pretty much know what the dozen-ish releases are that occupy the multiplexes right now \u2013 hint: they\u2019re listed below \u2013 and if one or more of them fit the bill for you and yours, enjoy. We at <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> like to take the offbeat or local path and, well, it\u2019s a mixed bag of customer service right now to start off the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the conclusion of the annual \u201c<strong>Mannheim Steamroller Christmas with Chip Davis<\/strong>\u201d concert at the <strong>Virginia Theatre<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Champaign<\/strong> on <strong>December 29<\/strong>, the venue closed for business with the general public (<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Virginia Theatre :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/thevirginia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">save for advance ticket sales<\/a><\/span>) in order to embark on another round of improvements at the facility; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Just a couple weeks of festive fun before the Virginia goes dark\u2019 by Jana Wiersema :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/just-a-couple-weeks-of-festive-fun-before-the-virginia-goes-dark\/article_91ea751c-b8ac-11ef-95ae-e3953443d84f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talking with the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> before the break<\/a><\/span>, executive director <strong>Steven Bentz<\/strong> promised the new security features and fly system control upgrades would be in place for when the Virginia launches its 2025 schedule with <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> on <strong>April 23<\/strong>. Elsewhere, the newspaper reported that <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Five Below, movie theater leases being finalized for Danville mall\u2019 by Jennifer Bailey :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/business\/five-below-movie-theater-leases-being-finalized-for-danville-mall\/article_bd66383c-bd68-11ef-aa67-43dc3c3f8fdc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incoming ownership of the <strong>Village Mall<\/strong> in <strong>Danville<\/strong> was in talks to lease space<\/a><\/span> to a few sorely-needed tenants that might include a theatrical exhibitor, taking the place of the <strong>AMC<\/strong> location that ceased operations two years ago with no fanfare or explanation. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Lorraine Theatre @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheLorraineTheatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We\u2019ve also noticed plenty of updates<\/a><\/span> on the final preparations at the restored <strong>Lorraine Theatre<\/strong> in <strong>Hoopeston<\/strong>, including the installation of a brand-new <strong>Dolby Atmos<\/strong> sound system and projection equipment, via <strong>Facebook<\/strong>; commenters from the <strong>Save the Lorraine Foundation<\/strong> are hinting that movies will return to the venue in \u201cearly 2025\u201d for the first time in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And finally, after a week off that follows month-long <strong>Halloween<\/strong> and <strong>Christmas<\/strong> movie marathons, the <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong> in <strong>Normal<\/strong> resumes their programming today, <strong>Friday, January 3<\/strong>, with the new <strong>Paul Schrader<\/strong> film <strong>OH, CANADA<\/strong>, a meditation on aging and art-making with <strong>Richard Gere<\/strong> and<strong> Uma Thurman<\/strong>; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Normal Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.normaltheater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it will begin a stretch of traditional, welcome, and first-run \u201cart house\u201d fare<\/a><\/span> that neither the Virginia\u2019s \u201cexperience\u201d nor the five-years-closed <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> can honestly provide to the C-U. However, you know what to do to ensure that movies continue to play everywhere from the Normal to the <strong>Avon Theatre<\/strong> in <strong>Decatur<\/strong>, the <strong>Onarga Theater<\/strong> in <strong>Onarga<\/strong>, and all cinema-going points in between. <em>Attend<\/em>. It\u2019s that simple.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"OH, CANADA (Kino Lorber Films)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR314_ohcanada.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"664\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>IMAGERY DU C-U | Picturing Our Scene on the Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many moons ago in that fateful month of January 2017, when the health of our beloved <strong>Ma JaPan<\/strong> started to falter and our lives changed forever, I wrote a handful of posts about personal concerns as well as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"MFHQ #1: Our \u201cXanadu\u201d and you :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=10629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thoughts on different kinds of writings I might try to liven up <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>. None of it went past the \u201clet\u2019s pose an idea and see if it sticks\u201d phase but, given the last few weeks\u2019 worth of <strong>Calendar<\/strong> featurettes in which we\u2019ve talked about various ways that our cinema culture has manifested, I\u2019d like to finally try out one of them. The intent was to share relevant artifacts or merchandise that we hadn\u2019t used for editorial before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To pair with the theatrical theme of today\u2019s <strong>Report<\/strong>, I have <em>just<\/em> the thing to share with you. Although I don\u2019t do it nearly as much as I used to, one of my \u201ckill a little time before bed\u201d activities has been to search on <strong>eBay<\/strong> with various terms, many of them directly tied to the film culture du C-U, and see what I could possibly turn up. A smattering of items has been welcomed into the <strong>MFHQ<\/strong> holdings over the years because of this \u2013 some things for the novelty, some things for their potential use as graphics or information to support Confidential reporting, and some things that I did not know existed before finding their listings. The following piece belongs in the middle category. I\u2019d searched for Art Theater ephemera before and had almost always found nothing. Church Street<\/strong> during <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Park Theatre :: Champaign-Urbana Theater History\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cutheaterhistory.com\/park-theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <strong>Alger Brothers<\/strong>\u2019 ownership of the Park<\/a><\/span>. Since the main features were released by multiple studios \u2013 <strong>UNION PACIFIC<\/strong> and <strong>THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES<\/strong> from <strong>Paramount Pictures<\/strong>, <strong>CHARLIE CHAN IN RENO<\/strong> from <strong>20th Century Fox<\/strong>, and <strong>BLACKWELL\u2019S ISLAND<\/strong> and <strong>HELL\u2019S KITCHEN<\/strong> from <strong>First National\/Warner Bros.<\/strong> \u2013 the paper was probably made up by the Algers and not pre-printed by a studio for local management to stamp their venue name on. It reminds me of the four-page movie guides that were being issued by<strong> Tom Angelica<\/strong> for the <strong>New Art Theatre<\/strong> when I first moved to Champaign in 1993 (<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"December 13-19, 2024 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=16175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">again<\/a><\/span>, that year\u2026) often with reprints of <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong>\u2019s reviews from the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chicago Sun-Times<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Priscilla Lane is featured in October 1939 on the back side of a lobby herald for the Alger Brothers\u2019 Park Theatre in Champaign, Illinois. She appeared in approximately 30 pictures between 1937 and 1948 and was a member of a popular singing group with her three older sisters. Some of them starred together in a series of movies, the first of which was <strong>FOUR DAUGHTERS<\/strong> in 1938, and her other notable <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> credits included <strong>ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, THE ROARING TWENTIES<\/strong>, and <strong>Hitchcock<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>SABOTEUR<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Priscilla Lane :: Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Priscilla_Lane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She rests at <strong>Arlington National Cemetery<\/strong> with her husband, <strong>Joseph A. After I read an e-mail prompt that told me the package had been delivered, I went out to my mailbox and found the envelope shoved inside as you see it in my photograph. This surely is not the seller\u2019s fault \u2013 fairly rigid cardboard had been secured with tape around the Park paper and \u201cDo Not Bend\u201d was clearly marked on the outside \u2013 or necessarily the <strong>Post Office<\/strong>\u2019s mistake, apart from the decision of the delivery person to not get out of their vehicle and leave it at the back door of <strong>MFHQ Deux<\/strong> on that brisk April afternoon. <em>Hrm<\/em>. The damage was minimal; it\u2019s invisible to the camera lens, but there is a light vertical crease on the left side of poor Priscilla that is consistent with the temporary bend. I stifled a complaint, despite the archivist inside of me having a fit, but that doesn\u2019t mean <em>you<\/em> should do so when acquiring those collectibles or antiques that mean something to you. As we also can see, the herald still \u201cworks\u201d fine and is serving its purpose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the next two <strong>Calendars<\/strong>, we plan on taking a recess from the <strong>Reports<\/strong> for a couple of months. During the \u201cdown time,\u201d I will be livening up the \u201c<strong>Imagery<\/strong>\u201d department with a series of new photos and old tales to share, based on some of the other items I have picked up recently. Please stick with us if that may interest you, especially as a primer on what to look for in the wild that is related to the movies du C-U.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I\u2019ll leave you with a bonus eBay find that I passed on. It would have been<em> so cool<\/em> to own if I\u2019d had an appropriate way to display it <em>and<\/em> if it hadn\u2019t been priced at more than one hundred dollars. Listed by a seller in 2017 and dating from the national rollout by <strong>RKO Radio Pictures<\/strong> in 1933, the following is a promotional herald for the original <strong>KING KONG<\/strong> when it played the Virginia Theatre. Yes, it sold, and no, I have nary a clue as to who picked up the prize. My consolation was to be heads-up and download the high-resolution images posted to eBay so that future me could use them when the occasion would present itself like, oh, <em>right now<\/em>.
