There\u2019s nothing like grabbing a magazine or paperback or digest or hardcover and finding a comfortable enough place to sit down or recline with it. I have plenty of choices here in the house on the edge of an American small town, between <strong>Ma JaPan<\/strong>\u2019s library that waits patiently on the shelves and my own library slowly making its way here and a nominal amount of material that I\u2019ve bought in the last few years. I\u2019ve spent way more time doing my part in making publications as a professional than I have partaking in publications that I simply have a personal interest to peruse. That reality kind of saddens me. I don\u2019t even have a designated corner set up for the pleasure. <em>Hrm<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Movie magazines, monster magazines, specialty magazines, comic books, and the occasional history, science, literature, and art periodicals have been my jam since I was a young lad, many of which have fallen by the wayside given the fickle state of publishing. I learned at the end of the summer that one of my readin\u2019 and collectin\u2019 mainstays from the Eighties and Nineties, the \u201cyesteryear\u201d media title <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Filmfax<\/span><\/strong>, was <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018CHFB Exclusive interview: FILMFAX is folding...\u2019 by \u2018Taraco\u2019 :: The Classic Horror Film Board\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tapatalk.com\/groups\/monsterkidclassichorrorforum\/viewtopic.php?p=1865179#p1865179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being cancelled after nearly 40 years in print<\/a><\/span> by its founder and editor, <strong>Michael Stein<\/strong> of <strong>Evanston<\/strong>. That\u2019s an amazing run for any niche publication, let alone one sticking it out so far into the 21st century, but given this particular market, the oversaturation of similar internet content, and Stein\u2019s age of eighty years, it\u2019s of little surprise that he would bow out. I always liked picking it up as a flashback-heavy alternative to the headier <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cinefantastique<\/span><\/strong>, techier <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cinefex<\/span><\/strong>, and more fan-friendly <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Starlog<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fangoria<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On one of my recent trips to <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>, I found the last gasp <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Filmfax<\/span> for sale on the shelves of <strong>Barnes &amp; Noble<\/strong>. While the 165th issue is right in line with the vintage territory Stein and company know well, the tell-tale signs are present \u2013 a reduced 68-page count, next to no advertising, a lack of regular departments like the letter column \u2013 and it could have gone out on a much lesser note. I\u2019m using this denouement as an example of periodical decay because it also marks the end of a small group of movie magazines originating in <strong>Illinois<\/strong> that I grew up devouring. Others included Stein\u2019s predecessor to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Filmfax<\/span>, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fantastic Films<\/span><\/strong>, and a sister title, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Outr\u00e9<\/span><\/strong>, as well as the aforementioned <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cinefantastique<\/span>, which has been gone for two decades, and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Scary Monsters<\/span><\/strong>, which is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Scary Monsters Magazine :: MyMovieMonsters.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mymoviemonsters.com\/store.php\/mymoviemonsters\/ct196494\/scary_monsters_magazine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still issued quarterly by its <strong>Arizona<\/strong>-based owners<\/a><\/span> who bought the property from creator <strong>Dennis Druktenis<\/strong>, formerly of <strong>Highwood<\/strong>, about ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\u2018Filmfax Plus\u2019 issue 165 (Artwork: courtesy Michael Stein)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR317_filmfax.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"585\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I know that I can always check out other and similar avenues in print and electronic form. The death of close-to-home familiars after all these years is simply a big bummer. The same can be said for all the local publications I used to read on the regular, whether or not they still are active. Upstairs, I have a box of old print issues from various downstate sources, mostly found in the C-U, which reminds me of the more tactile times when we learned and experienced off the computer, tablets, and phones, sharing our findings directly with our friends and acquaintances. It includes myriad copies and tear sheets from the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pantagraph<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Illini<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Vidette<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">public \u2018I\u2019<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CU Cityview<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Paper<\/span><\/strong>, and of course, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Octopus<\/span><\/strong>, a 2000 issue of which featured the photograph at the head of this segment. It was taken by yours truly in the upper level of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Jane Addams Book Shop :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.janeaddamsbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jane Addams Book Shop<\/strong><\/a><\/span> with one of their workers, <strong>Kara<\/strong>, when I served as the alternative weekly\u2019s production manager. Cultural fun times in the C-U, those days were.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A resident of Champaign who easily understands my \u201cprint pain\u201d is <strong>Jason Croft<\/strong>, the radio producer and announcer who works for <strong>Illinois Public Media<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong>. Mirroring to a point my horde of monster and cinema magazines is the collection of golden-age comics and hot-rod, Tiki, and men\u2019s magazines and digests amassed by \u201c<strong>Java<\/strong>\u201d and storied in his \u201cDirty Old Man Cave.\u201d Whereas I did not directly reflect my early reading interests in the self-publishing that I\u2019ve done over the last twenty-five years, Java went all in to launch <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bachelor Pad Magazine<\/span><\/strong>, his ode to the saucy print lit of the Fifties and Sixties that is based on a prior website where he expressed his love for all things mid-century modern. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BPM<\/span> just released their 70th issue and a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nylon Nightcap<\/span><\/strong> spin-off, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Bachelor Pad Magazine :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/bachelorpadmagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found for sale along with many other editions at this website<\/a><\/span>, and I do my small part in proofreading the goodies.
