(Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR328_mfhq1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite our promise last week that we would begin a show and tell <em>this<\/em> week featuring some of the recently acquired movie ephemera of <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond that we\u2019ve given a home at<strong> MFHQ Deux<\/strong> up north in the<strong> Illinois Valley<\/strong>, <strong>Ye Ed<\/strong> decided that we could stand one more off ramp for context. <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Calendar: April 4-10, 2025 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=16399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The coincidence we shared in the previous <strong>Images<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>, wherein the same Ye Ed singled out a <strong>Dora Hall<\/strong> LP at the <strong>Horizons Music Warehouse<\/strong> of <strong>Mendota<\/strong> largely because he had recently learned about Hall\u2019s connection with the former <strong>Solo Cup<\/strong> plant of Urbana, is <em>not<\/em> out of the ordinary. Physical evidence of our film culture has <em>never<\/em> been abundant in the wild and, if we can make the connection and justify the price, it might just come back to HQ with us for safe keeping, enjoyment, and editorial inspiration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We had piped up a few years ago about starting a series where our dearest readers could vicariously check out some of the cool collectibles and artifacts in our care while we talked about how we got them, why we had them, and where in the C-U cinema history they belonged. This was in part because we\u2019ve always been disappointed that we never turned <strong>MFHQ<\/strong>, situated a couple of blocks away from the lovely <strong>West Side Park<\/strong> beside downtown Champaign, into a destination hangout for our friends and Confidential agents so we could visit in the comfortable space where all our ideas incubated and magic occurred. The illustrated anecdotes that will appear, starting in next week\u2019s <strong>Calendar<\/strong>, are in the same spirit as before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The OG MFHQ facing west. (Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR328_mfhq2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even with all the floor space we have at<strong> Momkoke Manor<\/strong>, establishing MFHQ Deux as more than a nebulous concept has not been high on Ye Ed\u2019s to-do list as he continues to hash out the remnants of his parents\u2019 lives and stabilize his own. Therefore, the items are being staged in a nondescript manner, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Calendar: January 3-9, 2025 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=16235\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar to how we pictured the vintage <strong>Park Theatre<\/strong> handout<\/a><\/span> featuring the actress <strong>Priscilla Lane<\/strong> in a previous post. This is in absolute contrast to the colorful and relatively organized backdrop that would have been the original <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong>, which we\u2019re giving you a rare peek at today. Above and below are pictures of Ye Ed\u2019s hovel, where many years\u2019 worth of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Confidential<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong> activity took place and much of the tangible proof that informed our scene coverage was stored in all the boxes, shelves, filing cabinets, and closet space we could spare throughout <strong>Apt. 3D<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The OG MFHQ facing east. (Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR328_mfhq3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Those snaps were taken in December 2020, not long after we had to agree to let go of 3D and move out of the world-famous \u201c<strong>Building<\/strong>\u201d in the <strong>Sesquicentennial Neighborhood<\/strong>. Sadly, MFHQ looked like <em>this<\/em> on <strong>January 20, 2021<\/strong>, the day before our twenty-five-year tenure on <strong>Prairie Street<\/strong> came to an end:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The OG MFHQ facing west, just three weeks later. (He was right.) The picture below shows a handful of pieces that have <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> or <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MF<\/span><\/strong> relevance including a one-sheet for the <strong>DeKalb<\/strong>-filmed indie comedy <strong>LOVE 101<\/strong> that its co-writer\/director, <strong>Adrian Fulle<\/strong>, gave to your humble editor during a promotional stop in the C-U at the end of March 2000, as was <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Calendar: March 28-April 3, 2025 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=16387\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just recalled in a <strong>Confidential Almanac<\/strong> entry<\/a><\/span>. All of these survived and are currently stored at the covert <strong>MFHQ Annex<\/strong> in Champaign, along with other material directly related to the C-U filmography, where they are not convenient for us to access right now. (Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cublog_calendarBNR328_mfhq7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Through very tired eyes after approximately eight weeks straight of clearing out 3D, constantly driving back and forth between Champaign and Mendota, attempting to put in hours at his employment, being conscious about his every move outside of \u201cBuilding\u201d due to pandemic restrictions, fretting from a distance about the health and well-being of <strong>Momkoke<\/strong> and <strong>Carlkoke<\/strong>, and wrapping his head around the attempted insurrection of the <strong>United States<\/strong> government in the middle of it all, Ye Ed took these archival images of MFHQ\u2019s last breaths between 3 and 3:30 a.m. At around <strong>4:45 a.m. <\/strong>on <strong>January 21<\/strong>, he turned in the keys and then drove a car bursting with belongings for two-and-a-half hours straight <em>and<\/em> on no sleep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Any which way you can, join us next week for the first entry of our \u201cConfidential Picture Show.\u201d Thanks!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>15 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>April 15-20, 2010:<\/em> Inspired by the warm reception given to his <strong>Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong> \u201cmovie show\u201d at Urbana\u2019s <strong>Caffe Paradiso<\/strong> the previous spring, <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong> of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Confidential<\/span><\/strong> takes up a cross-town opportunity to build a more substantial showcase for independent cinema. He and <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> owner <strong>Sanford Hess<\/strong> collaborate to launch the first <a title=\"New Art Film Festival @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/newartfilmfestival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">New Art Film Festival<\/span><\/strong><\/a> to offer <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> a unique program, drawing from both locally-made content and the work of producers from <strong>Chicago<\/strong> and several Midwest states. A free \u201cnon-taxing\u201d reel, mixing trailers and film shorts in a similar vein to the Paradiso event, kicks off the NAFF on <strong>Thursday, April 15<\/strong>, after which the full potential of its concept is demonstrated to audiences. Blocks include various pieces from <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> alumni and students, a selection of adventures from <strong>Dark Maze Studios<\/strong> of Champaign, the C-U debut of the documentary <strong>HOOPESTON<\/strong>, and features made by Pankoke\u2019s contacts through the defunct <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> journal such as <strong>EXISTO, RETURN IN RED<\/strong>, and <strong>DEADWOOD PARK<\/strong>. Screenings are paced across six days, the first three concurrent with Boneyard Arts and a closing \u201cbest of\u201d presentation taking place on <strong>Tuesday, April 20<\/strong>, the night before <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> commences.
