So, where does that leave our enrolled Illini in having their own work seen, heard, and celebrated? You can find out pretty easily at the UI <strong>Spurlock Center for World Cultures, 600 S. Gregory St., Urbana<\/strong>, this coming <strong>Friday, May 2<\/strong>, when the classmates of MACS (<strong>Media and Cinema Studies<\/strong> unit in the <strong>College of Media<\/strong>) and faculty supervisor <strong>Jonathan Knipp<\/strong> put on the newest <strong>Illinois Student Film Festival<\/strong>. Doors will open at <strong>6 p.m.<\/strong> for mingling and the lights will go down soon after<strong> 7 p.m.<\/strong> for movie-gazing as the free showing will offer its audience an intimate look at the stories and sensations that young people on campus have teamed up to relate on the big screen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Illinois Student Film Festival sets stage for student filmmakers\u2019 by Makenna Norman :: The Daily Illini\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyillini.com\/buzz-stories\/movies-and-tv\/film-festivals\/2025\/04\/22\/illinois-film-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In this <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Illini<\/span><\/strong> article<strong>, Makenna Norman<\/strong> visits with Knipp and his students<\/a><\/span> about what the show will entail. Yearly variations planned by those who take the spring semester \u201cFilm Festivals\u201d course, <strong>MACS 366<\/strong>, have entertained the campus community for more than a decade under previous guises like the <strong>Illini Film Festival, Golden Corn Film Festival, Illini Independent Film Festival, Illinifest<\/strong>, and <strong>UIUC Student Film Festival<\/strong> as it was known last year. Unlike the formulated consistency of the other events, Illinois FF is as much a presentation as it is a lab project that is experimented with by its revolving group of organizers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Illinois Student Film Festival (Artwork: courtesy ISFF\/College of Media, UIUC)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_illstudentff2025_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, unlike with Foxtail and \u2018<strong>Ebertfest<\/strong>,\u2019 we can\u2019t tell you <em>what<\/em> exactly will be shown other than the obvious; copy found on Illinois FF\u2019s social media states \u201cthe event will contain screenings, concessions, trivia, interviews, and more for all to enjoy,\u201d so it\u2019s clear that \u201cbig fun\u201d is a selling point. We\u2019re not even sure if movies from past years are available to watch or if there still is a dedicated website for Illinois FF, as the only link from <strong>Facebook<\/strong> leads to an online submission form. A hint at the variety of approach can be gleaned from the 2024 award winners, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Illinois Student Film Festival @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UIUCFilmFest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pictured on Facebook<\/a><\/span> and shared here; they include an experimental piece directed by <strong>Juan David Campolargo Hoyos<\/strong>, <strong>CHRONICLES OF THE FUTURE<\/strong>, winner of the <strong>Audience Award<\/strong> and a $100 gift card, and a period action fantasy called <strong>WUXING WARRIORS: AN ASIAN AMERICAN EPIC<\/strong>, which earned director <strong>David Zhang<\/strong> and crew the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Brother, lifelong friends create first fully endowed MACS fund to honor memory of Jonathan Laxamana\u2019 by Kelly Youngblood :: College of Media, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/media.illinois.edu\/brother-lifelong-friends-create-first-fully-endowed-macs-fund-to-honor-memory-of-jonathan-laxamana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jonathan Laxamana Award for Diversity in Student Filmmaking<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and a $500 prize. Congratulations to them and their achievements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We hope the students and audience members who gather together on Friday can appreciate all the effort that is put into something like the Illinois Student Film Festival, let alone its selections, and honestly wonder whether those who take MACS 366 or other relevant MACS courses ever learn about the legacy of film on campus apart from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018At the Movies\u2019 by Kevin Cook :: University of Illinois Alumni Association\" href=\"https:\/\/uiaa.org\/2025\/04\/22\/at-the-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the storied life of <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Many alumni have gone on to successful careers in media and entertainment, such as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Chicago Connection Fuels Visually Stunning Thriller \u2018Catalyst\u2019\u2019 by staff :: Screen Magazine\" href=\"https:\/\/screenmag.com\/chicago-connection-fuels-visually-stunning-thriller-catalyst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the filmmaker <strong>Christopher Folkens<\/strong> of <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> whose first feature production <strong>CATALYST<\/strong> was released in February<\/a><\/span>, and many tenets of cinema on campus have held steady over time, such as the regular presence of student-run clubs for film appreciation and creation like <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Illini Film &amp; Video @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/illinifilmandvideo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, which celebrates twenty-five years of making movies at UI this semester.
