Some of us just want to sneak to a movie house for a spell between all the other things\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead of going through and analyzing the <strong>Calendar<\/strong> listings \u2013 it\u2019s <strong>Disney<\/strong> and <strong>WICKED<\/strong> and a <strong>Chambana Film Society<\/strong> show on Sunday afternoon and the annual <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong> seasonal marathon and newer <strong>Christmas<\/strong> perennials, we just figured out, instead of a <strong>Robert Redford<\/strong> tribute today at the <strong>Fischer Theatre<\/strong> \u2013 we\u2019ll be catching up on the news impacting our area venues. First, a former <strong>AMC Showcase<\/strong> location in <strong>Mattoon<\/strong> that closed down earlier this year has been revived by the <strong>VIP Cinemas<\/strong> chain<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Mattoon movie theater to reopen before the end of the year\u2019 by staff :: WAND-TV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wandtv.com\/news\/mattoon-movie-theater-to-reopen-before-the-end-of-the-year\/article_83ea8a87-ea72-4021-9fd8-2ac8a4e8a261.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> as reported last month by <strong>WAND-TV<\/strong><\/a><\/span>; you can head over today if you live in the area as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"VIP Mattoon 10 :: VIP Cinemas\" href=\"https:\/\/vipcinemas.com\/vip-mattoon-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they are up and running with the current first-run crowdpleasers<\/a><\/span>. That said, VIP customers should watch their local schedules for once-a-day showings of fare that is put out by smaller distributors, such as the heist-and-gangsters action flick <strong>WILDCAT<\/strong> with <strong>Kate Beckinsale, Charles Dance<\/strong>, and <strong>Alice Krige<\/strong> that is opening today at Mattoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also in October, the volunteers who are working on a restoration and fundraising plan to reopen the <strong>Heart Theatre<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Effingham<\/strong> put in a little extra love to create a charming Heart float for the city\u2019s annual <strong>Halloween<\/strong> parade; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"October 26, 2025 post :: \u2018The Heart of Effingham\u2019 @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thehearttheatre\/posts\/pfbid0M1A4XVJCsspvS5bKbVi4B3hFHrB6b5Xz5gPkdn6o6MJR8wNfXExgsxRghontWN1ol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can see the result<\/a><\/span>, complete with Beauty and the Beast, on <strong>Facebook<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now with the <strong>Harvest Moon Twin Drive-in<\/strong> back open in <strong>Gibson City<\/strong> for <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Harvest Moon Twin Drive-in :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/harvestmoondrivein.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their annual \u201cHot Chocolate &amp; Holiday Movies\u201d schedule<\/a><\/span>, it\u2019s a good time to bring up a recent article about the precarious position of their industry. Run by <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Smile Politely<\/span><\/strong> in early October as the Harvest Moon\u2019s regular season was winding down and written by <strong>Max Pociask<\/strong>, it is not the usual feel-good piece on the miracle of an operating drive-in within a reasonable driving distance from <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018America\u2019s Best Drive-In\u2019 by Max Pociask :: Smile Politely\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/culture\/americas-best-drive-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This one lauds the overall communal experience in terms of spending a night at the Harvest Moon while punching the gut a bit with a reality check<\/a><\/span> \u2013 at risk is the health of many an American small town and business, including the remaining hardtops, due to the consolidation of agricultural production by corporations and the continual shafting of the needs of rural farmers whose livelihood affects everyone and everything around them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On a more positive note, the <strong>Golden Ticket Cinemas<\/strong> chain has arrived in <strong>Illinois<\/strong> and set up shop in a former multiplex building on the east side of <strong>Bloomington<\/strong>, opening their \u201cAle House\u201d concept to the public on <strong>Friday, October 17<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018It's opening day for Golden Ticket Cinemas in renovated East Bloomington movie theater\u2019 by Lauren Warnecke :: WGLT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wglt.org\/local-news\/2025-10-17\/its-opening-day-for-golden-ticket-cinemas-in-renovated-east-bloomington-movie-theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An article by <strong>WGLT<\/strong> lists the amenities<\/a><\/span> that would be available to customers including bottomless popcorn and a \u201cself-pour beer wall;\u201d movie fare is the expected as you can see below in the <strong>Calendar<\/strong>, although they do manage to get <strong>Netflix<\/strong> releases such as <strong>KNIVES OUT 3<\/strong> and <strong>JAY KELLY<\/strong> unlike our other exhibitors, so the personal luxury (and upcharge?) <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Bloomington Ale House :: Golden Ticket Cinemas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gtcinemas.com\/locations\/blooomington-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is the main distinction here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Back to the Fischer for a moment, we\u2019re glad to see <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Fischer Theatre :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fischertheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the movies make a comeback in their scheduling<\/a><\/span> even if the Redford f\u00eate did not pan out. Recently, they\u2019ve hosted the teen-produced film <strong>CROSSMARK<\/strong>, made plans to celebrate the one hundredth birthday of <strong>Dick Van Dyke<\/strong> with a program next weekend, and agreed to another indie screening at the end of 2025 that we\u2019ll talk about on <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> in a couple of weeks. Don\u2019t just attend our venues for kicks, dearest viewers, make good use of them like the Fischer. Talking turkey about weird movies with our dinner guest, Confidential agent <strong>Don of the D\/L<\/strong>, we landed on the topic of a new <strong>Dracula<\/strong> love triangle feature from <strong>France<\/strong> that was directed by <strong>Luc Besson<\/strong> (<strong>THE FIFTH ELEMENT<\/strong>) and also the new <strong>Romania<\/strong>-lensed farce based on the legend of <strong>Vlad the Impaler<\/strong> from director <strong>Radu Jude<\/strong>. Then, <strong>Ye Ed<\/strong> remembered that a Killer Tomatoes sequel was set in France. (Indeed, we\u2019re <em>still<\/em> not sure how it transpired in that head of his.) So, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"KILLER TOMATOES EAT FRANCE opening scene :: \u2018Attack of the Killer Tomatoes\u2019 channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wWrpTL0jgek?si=8oDvM-alH0IA8o8n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he found a clip online to prove its existence<\/a><\/span> to Don, which turned out to be the opening scene in <strong>KILLER TOMATOES EAT FRANCE!<\/strong> from the vintage of 1992, and said clip happens to cut off after this aerial shot of our villains, including the great <strong>John Astin<\/strong>, getting away in\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The Flying Tomato levitates over a scenic landscape that is not the set of KILLER TOMATOES EAT FRANCE! Miraculously, <strong>EAT FRANCE<\/strong> was the fourth (but still the last) release in an improbable franchise (although <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018\u2018Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence\u2019 First Teaser: What The World Needs Now Is A \u2018My Tomato\u2019\u2019 by Anthony D\u2019Alessandro :: Deadline\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/attack-of-the-killer-tomatoes-organic-intelligence-teaser-1236477093\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a brand-new fifth entry is sprouting as we speak<\/a><\/span>) and, sure enough, \u201c<strong>Garcia\u2019s Pizza in a Pan<\/strong>\u201d is listed in a thank-you block during the end credits crawl. We\u2019d love to know how this came about, even if it was just the producers of the movie buying the rights to stock footage that Garcia\u2019s owners <strong>Ralph Senn<\/strong> and <strong>Joe Ream<\/strong> previously had shot for them to promote their business. Many of us will always have memories of stopping at a Garcia\u2019s, in particular the labyrinthine wonder that resided in the shadow of <strong>Watterson Towers<\/strong> near the <strong>Illinois State University<\/strong> campus in <strong>Normal<\/strong> and the similar location that used to be on <strong>Green Street<\/strong> in <strong>Campustown<\/strong>, as well as looking up while out and about during a weekend in the C-U to see the Garcia\u2019s balloon quietly pass overhead. It was always a treat and we knew <em>exactly<\/em> who it was advertising. Hopefully, they will hold the Killer Tomatoes on our next order&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> The Garcia\u2019s balloon appears for a few brief shots in the movie, while a jovial Astin and his rubber ghoulies are snacking on a pizza pie that is clearly <em>not<\/em> from our beloved Brothers. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"KILLER TOMATOES EAT FRANCE :: \u2018theoneblackbart\u2019 channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/O7r17AaKmX8?si=TnvRnxzqRXIz0wlr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We found an online rip<\/a><\/span> and skimmed through it to be sure; seems that<strong> KILLER TOMATOES EAT FRANCE!<\/strong> and its predecessor, <strong>KILLER TOMATOES STRIKE BACK!<\/strong>, have not made an official jump to streaming even if <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Attack of the Killer Tomatoes\u2019 channel @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Killertomatoes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can enjoy a bushel of clips<\/a><\/span> on the official \u201cAttack of the Killer Tomatoes\u201d channel. Dang it, a <strong>Gutbuster<\/strong> and a movie <em>does<\/em> sound good on this Tomato Red Friday \u2026 but which movie should we pick?
