{"id":1686,"date":"2010-02-20T19:39:06","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T01:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1686"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:56:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:56:28","slug":"hess-expands-arts-canvas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1686","title":{"rendered":"Hess expands Art\u2019s canvas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yet <em>another <\/em>topic that we let slip here at <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> is the ownership change from <strong>Greg Boardman<\/strong> to <strong>Sanford Hess<\/strong> at downtown <strong>Champaign<\/strong>\u2019s venerable <a title=\"The Art Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecuart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Art Theater<\/strong><\/a>. When last discussed, <a title=\"Italian THIEF ends 6-1\/2 year run :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1491\" target=\"_blank\">Boardman had just finished his run<\/a> at <strong>126 W. Church St.<\/strong> with international chestnut <strong>THE BICYCLE THIEF<\/strong>, making way for Hess to start his tenure with <strong>Richard Linklater<\/strong>\u2019s underrated <strong>ME AND ORSON WELLES<\/strong> on New Year\u2019s Day. We still plan to editorialize on <em>the before vs. the after<\/em> in a future post, along with conducting a fresh interview with Hess a few months on, but we\u2019d like to hold up the current programming frame as a glimmer of hope that the new guard will finally broaden the content projected onto the Art\u2019s silver screen in ways that the old guard stubbornly avoided.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After two weeks of <strong>ORSON WELLES<\/strong>, Hess brought in the lauded war drama <strong>THE MESSENGER<\/strong>, directed by <strong>Oren Moverman<\/strong> and starring <strong>Ben Foster, Jena Malone<\/strong>, and <strong>Woody Harrelson<\/strong>, for two additional weeks, accented by a private screening early on <strong>Sunday, January 10<\/strong>, of the locally-shot <a title=\"LEADING LADIES :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.leadingladiesmovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>LEADING LADIES<\/strong><\/a> and a late-night reprisal of Harrelson\u2019s fall hit <strong>ZOMBIELAND <\/strong>during <strong>MESSENGER<\/strong>\u2019s weekends. The Art followed this with one week each of <strong>Tom Ford<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>A SINGLE MAN<\/strong> and <strong>Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>BROKEN EMBRACES<\/strong> paired with late shows of <strong>FERRIS BUELER\u2019S DAY OFF<\/strong> and <strong>DONNIE DARKO<\/strong>, respectively, along with a <strong>Bollywood <\/strong>matinee of <strong>MAYABAZAAR<\/strong> (1957) on <strong>Saturday, February 13<\/strong>. So far, so good; the marquee choices ran the gamut one would expect from a movie house called \u201cthe Art\u201d while the revivals catered expectantly towards World Cinema fans as well as college audiences up for revisiting youth culture favorites and cult classics-<em>via<\/em>-home video exposure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now we have the stretch starting yesterday, <strong>Friday, February 19<\/strong>, for which Hess has packed away the kid gloves in lieu of throwing curve balls. To start, the Art inadvertently referenced its own past by playing a program called \u201c<a title=\"The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2010 :: ShortsHD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shortshd.com\/theoscarshorts\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2010<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d distributed by <strong>Magnolia Pictures<\/strong>. As of this writing, only two chances remain to see each half of the alternating bill \u2013 tonight, <strong>Saturday, February 20, 7:30 p.m.<\/strong>, and tomorrow, <strong>Sunday, February 21, 5 p.m.<\/strong>, for the animated set (featuring perennial <strong>Academy Award<\/strong> favorites <strong>Wallace &amp; Gromit<\/strong> in <strong>A MATTER OF LOAF AND DEATH<\/strong>) and tomorrow at <strong>2:30<\/strong> and <strong>7:30 p.m.<\/strong> for the live-action set. It\u2019s uncommon to see omnibus features of this nature play theatrically in Champaign-<strong>Urbana<\/strong>; gone are the days when compilations such as <strong>Spike and Mike\u2019s Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation<\/strong> and the classier <strong>International Tourn\u00e9e of Animation<\/strong> regularly made the art-house rounds, including the Art. A welcome return of the format, this is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One show also remains at <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong> tonight for this weekend\u2019s late-night feature, the sci-fi\/horror hybrid <strong>DAYBREAKERS <\/strong>starring <strong>Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe<\/strong>, and <strong>Sam Neill<\/strong>. After Sunday, the Art breaks even further from a normal schedule by slotting a short run of the documentary <strong>TAKEDOWNS AND FALLS<\/strong>. Co-directed by <strong>Todd Hickey<\/strong> and <strong>Kirk Ledger<\/strong>, the film follows a high school wrestling squad from <strong>Harrisburg, PA<\/strong>, in their quest to win the state championship. <a title=\"TAKEDOWNS AND FALLS :: Official Weblog\" href=\"http:\/\/takedownsandfalls-blog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">According to the official Weblog<\/a>, the film \u201cexplores themes of positive psychology, family, friendship, and team work.\u201d Both Hickey and featured wrestler <strong>Tony Dallago<\/strong>, currently a collegiate grappler with the <strong>University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/strong>, will be attending all <strong>FALLS <\/strong>screenings at <strong>7:30 p.m.<\/strong> on <strong>Monday, February 22<\/strong>, through <strong>Thursday, February 25<\/strong>, as well as the bonus \u201cdiscussion group\u201d show on <strong>Tuesday, February 23, 2:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hess has already tipped <strong>CUBlog <\/strong>on what\u2019s in store after this week and the next, which will feature the Oscar-nominated drama <strong>THE LAST STATION<\/strong> with <strong>James McAvoy, Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren<\/strong>, and <strong>Paul Giametti<\/strong>. We\u2019ll allow him the pleasure of announcing the selections, which relate to a favorite American director whose most recent feature just opened nationwide. As for our favorite local theater <em>not <\/em>playing <strong>SHUTTER ISLAND<\/strong>, we hope this trend of experimentation continues and the Champaign-Urbana community will support Hess\u2019 efforts to broaden the cinematic reach of the Art.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> Not 24 hours after posting the above, your humble editor stumbled upon full-color Art Theater handbills at a downtown eatery which revealed the mystery movies. Guess that means we can freely discuss them with you, dearest readers\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It will become apparent that Hess loves himself a good rock documentary, and what better excuse is there to sample the Art\u2019s lauded audio system than with a film heavy on the soundtrack music? One of our distinct memories of the Boardman era took place during a short run of <strong>Jonathan Demme<\/strong>\u2019s concert film, <strong>NEIL YOUNG: HEART OF GOLD<\/strong>, which for our money exuded the warmest tones to <em>ever <\/em>waft from any set of six-channel speakers hanging above our heads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The gear at the Art will receive a more vigorous workout during the late shows promoted in said handbills. Hess has chosen to test the waters with <strong>THE LAST WALTZ<\/strong> on <strong>Friday, February 26<\/strong>, and <strong>Saturday, February 27<\/strong>, followed by <strong>SHINE A LIGHT<\/strong> on <strong>Friday, March 5<\/strong>, and <strong>Saturday, March 6<\/strong>, starting at <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong> All the kids finally know of their director, <strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong>, due to the recent box office success of <strong>SHUTTER ISLAND<\/strong> and <strong>THE DEPARTED<\/strong> if not for his iconic work including <strong>MEAN STREETS, TAXI DRIVER<\/strong>, and <strong>RAGING BULL<\/strong>, although they might be hard pressed to place a finger on <strong>WALTZ <\/strong>and the group at its epicenter, <strong>The Band<\/strong> with <strong>Robbie Robertson<\/strong>.
