Film Comedy from Different Eras\u201d weekly between February 25<\/strong> and April 22<\/strong>, except for on March 18, and \u201cThe Victorian Novel, Dickens and Trollope, on Film\u201d will be led by local classical music expert John Frayne<\/strong> from February 27<\/strong> to April 1<\/strong>7 \u2026<\/p>\n Senior honors student M. E. Colby<\/strong>, who attends Eastern Illinois University<\/strong>, has combined her love of butterfly research with training in video production to arrive at BUTTERFLIES & YOU<\/strong>, a 24-minute documentary about the various species that inhabit Illinois and the work of the Urban Butterfly Initiative<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, a non-profit organization based in Charleston<\/strong>. After several semesters\u2019 worth of planning, shooting, and traveling the state thanks to a grant, the double major in communications and biology saw her thesis project air on WEIU-TV<\/strong> and debut via YouTube<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on Tuesday, January 13<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n Community members young and older have opportunities to stoke their creative fires and hone their brewing skill sets in the coming weeks. A final Pens to Lens<\/strong><\/a><\/span> workshop for the last-minute massaging of scripts, written by K-12 students and teams from the immediate area, will be held on Saturday, February 28, 1 p.m.<\/strong>, at the Urbana Health and Wellness Center<\/strong> on Washington Street<\/strong>, while Flyover Film Studios<\/strong><\/a><\/span> has a pair of half-weeks dedicated to crash courses on camerawork, led by the cinematographer and producer Robert Patrick Stern<\/strong>, slated for March 9-13<\/strong> and 16-19<\/strong> in Rantoul<\/strong>. Always remember \u2013 this is not just movies, it\u2019s our lives<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n 25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Tuesday, January 23, 2001:<\/em> A prolific distributor of micro-budget films and related collectibles, Sub Rosa Studios<\/strong> of Syracuse, New York<\/strong>, announces a trio of new titles releasing to the home video market<\/a><\/span>. One is the debut feature-length project from Shut Up and Do It Productions<\/strong> of Champaign<\/strong>, DOGS IN QUICKSAND<\/strong>, which was filmed by writer\/director Mike Trippiedi<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and cinematographer\/editor Bill Yauch<\/strong> with cast and crew in numerous Champaign County<\/strong> locations during the summer of 1997. Although several of their recent video shorts have played in regional film festivals, earned awards in competition, and received coverage in periodicals friendly to the emerging \u201cbackyard cinema\u201d movement in America such as Film Threat<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> and Shock Cinema<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>, DOGS<\/strong> is the first effort to be made widely available to the general public in any format. Local audiences received an initial look at the movie, a dark and quirky comedy about an estranged small-town couple played by Anne Shapland Kearns<\/strong> and Trippiedi whose lives are turned upside down after a murder occurs, in November 1999 as a selection of the third Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> at the New Art Theater<\/strong>. PSYCHO SCARECROW<\/strong> and THE MURDER MEN<\/strong> are the other two indies being premiered on VHS by Sub Rosa, which would reissue DOGS<\/strong> in various DVD sets over the next several years after rebranding as SRS Cinema<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.
