Always remember \u2013 this is not just movies, it\u2019s our lives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>27 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>Wednesday, March 3, 1999:<\/em> Operating out of a studio-office situated near downtown <strong>Champaign, Illinois<\/strong>, <strong>Opteryx Press<\/strong> puts its spin on independent film discourse to paper for the first time with the release of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM: The Warning Shot<\/span><\/strong>. The letter-size, 12-page \u2018zine is a copy shop creation with a teal cover that serves as a low-budget teaser for the upcoming <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong>, \u201cThe Magazine of Personal Cinema in Action.\u201d Novice self-publisher <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong> draws the content from his recent interactions with participants in the American \u201cfilm festival circuit\u201d as well as science-fiction and horror fandom; interview subjects include <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Scary Monsters Magazine<\/span><\/strong> publisher <strong>Dennis Druktenis<\/strong> from the <strong>Chicago<\/strong> suburb of <strong>Highwood<\/strong>, <strong>Oregon<\/strong>-based stop-motion animator <strong>Suzanne Twining<\/strong>, and filmmaker and photographer <strong>Brien Burroughs<\/strong> of <strong>San Francisco<\/strong>. Short subjects created by the latter two were introduced to a Champaign-Urbana audience during the first <strong>Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> in 1997. \u201cMany of the films in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> will be raw and unpolished,\u201d writes Pankoke in a \u201cSave the Mirth\u201d editorial. \u201cSome will be experimental and abstract. Most will be far from perfect, at least according to the standards of mainstream critics and cinema historians. However, all belong to the century-old history of motion picture making, and this history deserves to be fleshed out by recording what is going on in the grassroots, the backyards, and the underground.
