We certainly will feel the roller coaster deep down in our guts as this week presses on. The curtains will be drawn, the house lights will dim, and the balcony will be closed on this era of \u201c<strong>Ebertfest<\/strong>\u201d when we get to mid-day Sunday. The prior evening, final remarks will be offered by event emcee and producer <strong>Chaz Ebert<\/strong>, event director <strong>Nate Kohn<\/strong>, and assistant festival coordinator <strong>Matt Fagerholm<\/strong> after the last audience of <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> watches the last selection, <strong>THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT<\/strong> directed by the dearly missed <strong>Rob Reiner<\/strong>, and offers each other their goodbyes, high fives, and ugly cries. Let\u2019s appreciate the fact that we even get a reprieve <em>at all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After making a joint announcement about shutting down <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>\u2019s marquee cinema event back in September with the <strong>College of Media at Illinois<\/strong>, which had been a partner dating back to <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Ebert\u2019s Overlooked fest to debut with \u2018Tron\u2019\u201d by Leonard Klady :: Variety\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/1999\/film\/news\/ebert-s-overlooked-fest-to-debut-with-tron-1117493319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first <strong>Overlooked Film Festival<\/strong> in 1999<\/a><\/span> and declined to continue their support of the effort due to their reasons, Chaz Ebert asked the faithful what they\u2019d like to see happen. A resounding \u201cOne more year!\u201d was the response. We therefore have <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebertfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 26th overall edition of \u201cEbertfest\u201d taking place during a concise two-day stretch<\/a><\/span> at its forever home, <strong>The Virginia Theatre<\/strong> at <strong>203 W. Park Avenue<\/strong> in downtown Champaign, this <strong>Friday, April 17<\/strong>, and <strong>Saturday, April 18<\/strong>, with a familiar cast of commentators enlisted to discuss each feature as did famously the eponymous founder, <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong>, and a roster of guests who are either familiar or directly involved with the pictures set to light up that towering screen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival (Artwork: courtesy REFF\/College of Media, UIUC)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_ebertfest2025_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"124\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eight theatrical features, a new hour-long documentary looking at the qualities of the late film critic and his festival, and a half-hour, one-act play called <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Siskel\/Ebert<\/span><\/strong>, which <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Siskel and Ebert Come Alive on Stage as Chicago Marks 50th Anniversary of Iconic Critic Duo\u2019 by Rick Porter :: The Hollywood Reporter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/siskel-ebert-50th-anniversary-stage-show-chicago-1236433851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dramatizes the taping of the duo\u2019s show early on in their syndication run with <strong>Disney<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, will make up this final bow to all the attendees, volunteers, journalists, financial partners, community and business sponsors, Ebert student fellows, <strong>RogerEbert.com<\/strong> associates, <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> academics and staff, and movie fans-at-large who have played a role in making this annual gathering a success. We\u2019ll even confide in our Confidential Agents that <strong>Ye Ed<\/strong>, who has not attended or been directly woven into its fabric for a decade, plans to materialize, even though he may only take in two or three shows at the Virginia. To him, part of the \u201cEbertfest\u201d mystique all these years was living in the moment all weekend and that involved <strong>West Side Park<\/strong> to the west, the <strong>Sesquicentennial Neighborhood<\/strong> just past that where he once lived, and the business district to the east with all the pre- and post-movie hangouts one could ask for. <strong>Mr. JaPan<\/strong> would like to soak up a little of <em>everything<\/em> once more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before we get together, we must also bring another \u201cEbertfest\u201d tradition to bear and that is our \u201cshort form\u201d schedule you can reference on the fly while darting about Park Avenue \u2013 we\u2019re not sure if there will be courtesy tents and food vendors across from the theater as in previous engagements \u2013 and rubbing elbows with your friends, neighbors, and visitors. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Virginia Theatre :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/thevirginia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Individual tickets and passes can still be bought through the Virginia\u2019s box office during business hours at <strong>(217) 356-9063<\/strong> or at their website<\/a><\/span>, although we have caught a few social media comments about <strong>CHILI FINGER<\/strong> being sold out. In the past, the Virginia has offered rush tickets prior to the more popular screenings, so be aware of those start times that we\u2019ve listed below if you want to take your chances. Enjoy, embrace, and may the <em>thumbs up<\/em> be with you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <strong>Ebert Symposium<\/strong>, organized by the <strong>Roger Ebert Center for Film Studies<\/strong> and held at the <strong>Spurlock Museum of World Cultures<\/strong> on the UI campus in the spring, took place in advance of \u201cEbertfest\u201d this year on <strong>March 30<\/strong> and <strong>31<\/strong>. The film in focus was <strong>THE WIZ<\/strong> and discussions pertained to Black acceptance and participation in our country\u2019s media culture. Ebert and Kohn have confirmed in public comments <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Roger Ebert Center for Film Studies :: College of Media at Illinois\" href=\"https:\/\/media.illinois.edu\/ebertcenter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Ebert Center will continue on at UI<\/a><\/span>, so maybe we\u2019ll get to enjoy hints of \u201cEbertfest\u201d vicariously in the future through that avenue, which has offered five to six events per semester and made them free and open to the public. Here\u2019s to the conclusion of a high-water mark in the film culture du C-U.
