EXHIBITION<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a week of first looks here in MICRO-FILM Country<\/strong> and we couldn\u2019t be happier to get down to business right \u2026 about \u2026 now!<\/em><\/p>\n

Shooting on Champaign County<\/strong> turf but editing in faraway Portland <\/strong>for the better part of three years, Jason Butler<\/strong> of Brainsmart Productions<\/strong> will finally unveil the concluding episode of his action-horror-comedy-townie opus, WEREWOLF CEMETERY<\/strong>, this weekend at Mike \u2018n\u2019 Molly\u2019s, 105 N. Market St.<\/strong>, downtown Champaign<\/strong>, on Friday, August 13<\/strong>, and Sunday, August 15<\/strong>, at 11 p.m.<\/strong> on both nights. Butler will also revive Issue 3 at the same location later tonight, Thursday, August 12<\/strong>, at midnight<\/strong>. \u201cRegarding Issue 4, the story is all there, the sound mix is not as I want it but is decent, and it is missing the [opening] credits sequence,\u201d Butler tells CUBlog<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be a long editing winter [to finish up].\u201d Look right here early tomorrow to get a quick peek at what\u2019s in store for all ye who enter the beer garden this weekend!<\/p>\n

Accompanying WC4<\/strong> on Sunday <\/strong>at both 10:30 p.m.<\/strong> and 1 a.m.<\/strong> will be a long-lost effort at no-budget surrealism by local graphic artist Karl Bauer<\/strong> called ONE ROACH FOR SEAMUS<\/strong>. \u201cI had intended to use the project in an application to NYU <\/strong>film school,\u201d says Bauer in a Facebook <\/strong>post. \u201cThe footage sat around for a number of years and was even completely missing for about a decade. Recently it was found so I decided to edit it [together].\u201d The short film features Danny Yairi, Shan Lusk, Joe Donhowe, Veerle Opgenhaffen<\/strong>, and Barney Joyce<\/strong>, who co-wrote SEAMUS <\/strong>with Bauer and also plays a double-crossing agent in the WEREWOLF CEMETERY<\/strong> series. The director also states that SEAMUS <\/strong>is influenced by David Lynch<\/strong>\u2019s seminal underground feature, ERASERHEAD<\/strong>, Franz Kafka<\/strong>\u2019s famous novella of alienation, The Metamorphosis<\/strong><\/span>, and JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN<\/strong>, a dreamlike Vietnam<\/strong>-era parable starring Timothy Bottoms<\/strong> and directed by Dalton Trumbo<\/strong>, screenwriter of HAWAII <\/strong>and PAPILLON<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s note that these are not just movie nights at Mike \u2018n\u2019 Molly\u2019s. \u201cThe Future of Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll\u201d showcase featuring The Fantastic Plastics, Achille Lauro<\/strong>, and Death Tram<\/strong> will play before WC3<\/strong> tonight, The Dirty Feathers<\/strong> and Santah <\/strong>will take the stage before WC4<\/strong> on Friday, and Kayla Brown, Brandon T. Washington<\/strong>, and Tricia Scully<\/strong> will perform before WC4\/SEAMUS<\/strong> on Sunday. Be there!<\/p>\n

We plan on discussing REVOLTING <\/strong>in next week\u2019s CUBiz<\/strong>, but right now we\u2019re encouraging you to attend the public premiere of this feature-length black comedy on Saturday, August 14, 8 p.m.<\/strong>, at the Kathryn Randolph Theater, 601 N. From Friday, August 13<\/strong>, through Sunday, August 15<\/strong>, an open casting call for the MTV <\/strong>series MADE <\/strong>will be held at the Illinois State Fair<\/strong> in <\/a>Springfield<\/a> <\/strong>between 11 a.m.<\/strong> and 5 p.m.<\/strong> each day. Producers are looking for young people ages 15-22 with \u201cbig personalities\u201d to potentially be featured on the program, which helps the talent see their dreams through to reality. MEETINGS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget that a week from tonight, Thursday, August 19, 7 p.m.<\/strong>, the Central Illinois Film Commission<\/strong> will meet at the Route 66 Hotel & Convention Center, 625 E. Saint Joseph St., Springfield<\/strong>, to discuss member activities and area opportunities. SUBMISSIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several grapevines, including the Midwest Independent Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, report that the deadline for submitting work to the 2nd annual Elgin (IL) Short Film Festival<\/strong> is next Wednesday, August 18<\/strong>. All rules and regulations can be found at this Web site<\/a>; the winning entries will be screened on the evening of Saturday, September 18<\/strong>, in the 1,200 seat auditorium of the Hemmens Cultural Center<\/strong> in Elgin\u2019s Center City<\/strong> area. The festival organizers promise $2,500 in cash prizes.<\/p>\n

AWARDS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apart from their newest venture, the Freeky Creek Short Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, Bill Kephart<\/strong> and Joe Taylor<\/strong> exercise their creative wiles by cranking out concept commercials to enter in assignments offered by PopTent.net<\/strong>. You may remember how one of their efforts netted them $5,000<\/a> at the end of last year. In the past few weeks, PopTent has tripled the dynamic duo\u2019s pleasure by choosing two additional videos as winners! In the first<\/a> which plugs Simple Green<\/strong> brand cleaning spray, an outdoors couple works, plays, and keeps their ATV shiny and clean with the product. The second<\/a> for La Quinta Inn & Suites<\/strong> postulates how Murphy\u2019s Law really<\/em> came to be. (Apparently, it involved chalkboards and sepia-toned footage.) That makes for a sum total of $15,500. Congratulations to the fellows and their collaborators!<\/p>\n

MEDIA LINKS<\/strong><\/p>\n

CUBlog <\/strong>caught a piece posted by the Chicago Sun-Times<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on August 4<\/strong> in which \u201cThe Watcher\u201d television columnist Maureen Ryan<\/strong> interviews actress Melissa McCarthy<\/strong> (GILMORE GIRLS<\/strong>) about her lead role in the upcoming CBS-TV<\/strong> sitcom MIKE & MOLLY<\/strong>, developed by TWO AND A HALF MEN<\/strong> masterminds Chuck Lorre<\/strong> and Mark Roberts<\/strong>, Tolono<\/strong>\u2019s favorite media son. It is no surprise that owner Mike Murphy<\/strong> intends to air MIKE & MOLLY<\/strong> at Mike \u2018n\u2019 Molly\u2019s in Champaign starting with the premiere on Monday, September 20, 8:30 p.m. CST<\/strong>, even though the show is set in Chicago and doesn\u2019t directly involve a favorite watering hole. CBS is streaming teaser clips<\/a> that set up the story line, in which McCarthy\u2019s \u201cMolly\u201d meets \u201cMike\u201d (played by Billy Gardell<\/strong>) at an Overeaters Anonymous<\/strong> meeting.<\/p>\n

Despite the media\u2019s increasing prevalence in our lives, not all people want or feel the need to be involved in media-making to be fruitful or simply happy. Case in point is Dad<\/strong>. Except for a handful of old Super 8 reels dating way back to my very beginning, I don\u2019t think any video or audio recordings exist of him \u2013 Mom <\/strong>did her part on the still photo front \u2013 and I did consider taping family gatherings a handful of times but I refrained. Memory is now forced to serve me right. That\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n

I wonder sometimes just how many folks go before the cameras for all the wrong reasons or are forced to be there without their complete consent so someone else can prove a point or earn a buck. For every second that preserves history, art, family, or the truth, many minutes are wasteful, disingenuous, or merely empty. We need to consider the integrity not only of that which we record, but of whom. Sometimes it means knowing when to not press the little red button in the first place.<\/p>\n
