Please support the artists and their work, attend screenings and events, and otherwise become active in our esoteric little world!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MFHQ &amp; YOU:<br \/>\nPump Fists for the Little Guy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of our original DIY media friends and <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> supporters is <strong>Sean Carswell<\/strong>, a California-by-way-of-Florida educator, essayist, novelist, founder of indie imprint <strong>Gorsky Press<\/strong>, and major factor in the success of <a title=\"Razorcake fanzine :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.razorcake.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">well-written punk culture mag <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Razorcake<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, co-founded with <strong>Todd Taylor<\/strong> of the late great <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Flipside<\/strong><\/span>. As part of his generosity towards your humble editor, complementary <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Razorcake<\/span> has found its way into our hands without fail since the first issue; as part of his support towards all the projects your humble editor stumbles through, <strong>MF <\/strong>has always been given a place in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Razorcake<\/span> despite its lack of outward punk rock-ness. Much to our surprise, the just-arrived <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Razorcake<\/span> #58 with a <strong>Halloween<\/strong>-colored <strong>Mark Sultan<\/strong> cover features a short-but-sweet review of <strong>C-U Confidential no.4<\/strong> by Hawai\u2019i musician\/activist <strong>Steve Hart<\/strong>. In it he says, \u201cI spent a year and a half in Illinois in the early \u201880s and would have loved to have something like this to read \u2013 along with the possibility of an indie-film scene in <strong>Champaign<\/strong>. I didn\u2019t even know of such an entity.\u201d Glad you enjoyed it, Mr. Hart, and now you know our dirty little secret! As to why this is a surprise, we actually sent along <strong>CUZine <\/strong>as a let\u2019s-catch-up gesture addressed to Carswell so, somehow, the little rascal must have found its way onto a review pile. <em>Hmmmm<\/em>. In fact, since we really haven\u2019t been stumping for reviews in that time-honored \u2018zine tradition, this marks the first public <strong>CUZine <\/strong>critique (that we know of) in its three-and-a-half year existence. We\u2019re quite elated to see this take place in the pages of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Razorcake<\/span>. Thanks, gang!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>EXHIBITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the anecdotal mother lode we issued last week, we\u2019re going to mostly stick with the facts this week so we can get this <strong>CUBiz<\/strong> posted on time. To begin, our friends at the <a title=\"Illinois International Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.illinoisinternationalfilmfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Illinois International Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> announced their film selections on <strong>Monday, September 27<\/strong>, which include the feature <strong>REVOLTING <\/strong>from <strong>Danville <\/strong>and the two-minute stop motion animation <strong>IT\u2019S A PENGUINFUL LIFE<\/strong> by <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> graduate student <strong>Thomas Nicol<\/strong>. Congratulations to the filmmakers! IIFF relocates from the west suburbs this year and will take place <strong>November 5-7<\/strong> at the <strong>Viaduct Theater<\/strong> in <strong>Chicago<\/strong>; we\u2019ll list specific dates and times for <strong>REVOLTING <\/strong>and <strong>PENGUNFUL <\/strong>in our calendar when we have them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We\u2019ve mentioned how <strong>LEADING LADIES<\/strong> has engineered a healthy showing on the festival circuit during the past few months, finally coming home to flaunt the goods in <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> last weekend, and we\u2019re happy to confirm that <strong>Team Beahm<\/strong> has plenty more exposure lined up for their low-budget, high-spirited feature in the coming weeks! Of note are three play dates within easy driving distance, the first of which will be <strong>Friday, October 8, 7 p.m.<\/strong>, at the <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong>, <strong>209 North St., Normal<\/strong>, as part of a week featuring gay-themed cinema including <strong>STONEWALL UPRISING, HOWL, PATRIK: AGE 1.5<\/strong>, and <strong>WERE THE WORLD MINE<\/strong>. Then, <strong>LADIES <\/strong>will storm one Midwest metropolis after another when they play the <strong>Reeling Film Festival<\/strong> on <strong>Thursday, November 11, 9:30 p.m.<\/strong>, at the <strong>Landmark Century Center Cinema, 2828 N. Clark St., Chicago<\/strong>, and the <strong>St. Louis International Film Festival<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday, November 20<\/strong>, time and location TBA. This will be followed by digital presentations of the British subterranean horror hit <strong>THE DESCENT<\/strong> (<strong>October 8<\/strong>), <strong>EVIL <\/strong>director <strong>Sam Raimi<\/strong>\u2019s return to gonzo comedy-horror <strong>DRAG ME TO HELL<\/strong> (<strong>October 15<\/strong>), the <em>other <\/em>prominent post-millennium British horror hit <strong>SHAUN OF THE DEAD<\/strong> (<strong>October 22<\/strong>), and the atmospheric Swedish vampire tale <strong>LET THE RIGHT ONE IN<\/strong> (<strong>October 29<\/strong>). All titles will likely follow the established <strong>Friday\/Saturday\/Thursday @ 10 p.m.<\/strong> schedule that has been used for late-night movies since the series\u2019 inception. Ha. <em>Ha.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>PRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We belatedly welcome back <strong>Chris <\/strong>and <strong>Anne Lukeman<\/strong> to the C-U! Now that the UIUC alums and <strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong> stalwarts have returned following a law school-abiding stint in <strong>Carbondale<\/strong>, they\u2019ve wasted no time in cooking up their next film project described as an \u201c8-10 minute sci-fi\/action short.\u201d They are still in need of several elements for the unnamed project, including an \u201cindustrial exterior space,\u201d computer\/electrical parts such as circuit boards and vacuum tubes from which to build props, an art director, and actors \u201cwho can play mid-to-late twenties.\u201d Screen tests will take place shortly and shooting is planned for the end of October, so write <strong>chrislukeman [at] gmail [dot] com<\/strong> if you can help out with any of the above requests or the film in general. Vampire <strong>Hannibal Hamlin<\/strong> will be staked \u2013 <em>er<\/em>, stoked \u2013 to no end if you <a title=\"Kill Vampire Lincoln Productions :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.killvampirelincoln.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">help the Lukemans focus<\/a> on this non-transient adventure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A month ago we posted an announcement from <a title=\"Bogdan Heretoiu biography\/CV :: Evolutionary Exploration\" href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryexploration.com\/HB\/portfolio\/html\/bogdan_heretoiu.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bogdan Heretoiu<\/strong><\/a> about the creation of a \u201cdance for camera\u201d film in Champaign-Urbana. Production will apparently begin this <strong>Sunday, October 3<\/strong>, according to a <strong>Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong> post by Heretoiu, continuing for consecutive Sundays until scheduling needs dictate otherwise. \u201cWe have a variety of interiors and exteriors with very complex choreography and a cast of approximately 20 people plus extras,\u201d writes Heretoiu, who also is looking for a production assistant to help coordinate the shoot. Contact him at <strong>bheretoiu [at] yahoo [dot] com<\/strong> if interested in the position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CUBlog <\/strong>friends <strong>Cara Day<\/strong> and <strong>Stephanie Swearingen<\/strong> killed eight hours last Saturday to drive north and attend the <strong>CONTAGION<\/strong> casting call we mentioned last week. Among numerous tidbits Day passed along to us: the show will need 3,700 extras during the Chicago leg of production beginning <strong>October 19<\/strong>, some will wear \u201cdisease control suits\u201d while others accessorize their suits with a \u201cbreathing apparatus\u201d which eliminates \u201cface time\u201d in lieu of a bump in pay, those picked to participate may receive less than 24 hours notice to appear on set, and several individuals who worked in <strong>THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> in 2008 have returned on this film. Weblog :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.impossiblefunky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">launching a tour to celebrate<\/a> the publication of his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CduC<\/span> compilation book, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Impossible Funky<\/span><\/strong>, which <a title=\"BearManor Media :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/bearmanormedia.bizland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>BearManor Media<\/strong><\/a> releases in October. White\u2019s long and winding road will come closest when he exclaims \u201cHarangue for Hollywood!\u201d at <strong>Quimby\u2019s Bookstore<\/strong> in Chicago on <strong>Saturday, December 4<\/strong>. Also, your humble editor was just invited to contribute to the next issue of the pop culture \u2018zine <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Syndicate Product<\/span><\/strong> by editrix <strong>A.j. Michel<\/strong>, who photocopied and hand-assembled <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SyndProd<\/span> under its previous name, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">low hug<\/span><\/strong>, while living here in the C-U. Even though <a title=\"Syndicate Product Covert HQ :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.syndicateproduct.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">she has become a very prolific on-line poster<\/a>, rest assured that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SyndProd<\/span> will be issued using the magical properties of toner, pulp, and skinny strips of bent metal.
