{"id":231,"date":"2007-11-20T23:06:11","date_gmt":"2007-11-21T05:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=231"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:59:55","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:59:55","slug":"hef-gives-money-to-usc-not-uiuc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=231","title":{"rendered":"Hef gives money to USC, not UIUC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><em>From November 19, 2007:<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a title=\"Hugh Hefner donates $2 million to USC archive, exhibition space @ USC.edu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usc.edu\/uscnews\/stories\/14576.html\" target=\"_blank\">Click to Read<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Article\u00a0on the Web site of the\u00a0<strong>University of Southern California<\/strong> about a $2 million donation from\u00a0<u><strong>Playboy<\/strong><\/u>\u00a0founder\u00a0<strong>Hugh Hefner<\/strong>\u00a0that will help establish a new exhibition space in\u00a0the famed USC\u00a0<strong>School of Cinematic Arts<\/strong> as well as an archive for storing student films, academic records, and priceless Hollywood memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Editor&#8217;s note:<\/em>\u00a0I attended the film preservation workshop that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=220\" target=\"_blank\">I mentioned a few weeks ago<\/a> on <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> and, in the course of talking with the young archivists and graduate students who ran the event, sensed a hopeful but hesitant vibe. The workshop most likely arose from a grant awarded the <strong>Graduate School of Library and Information Science<\/strong> in late 2006 which is funding the development of a procedure that will help librarians assess and improve\u00a0the condition of their media collections.\u00a0However, that\u00a0$420,000 grant apparently has little to do with the <strong>University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/strong> actively preserving its <em>own<\/em> holdings or\u00a0providing its staff with state-of-the-art tools for research and development.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">If you know me, then you\u00a0can guess\u00a0what\u00a0kind of surly ruminations are about to leap forward from my otherwise happy little keyboard:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice<\/em> if UIUC had legitimate reasons to attract the continuing interest and support of successful alumni in the media and entertainment fields who do not go by the name of <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Wouldn&#8217;t it be great<\/em> if a movie-loving entrepreneur like Hefner could be encouraged to deposit funds at his <em>alma mater<\/em> for the sake of fostering the study, creation,\u00a0and preservation of this past century&#8217;s most dominant art form?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Wouldn&#8217;t it be\u00a0swell<\/em> if UIUC stopped fucking around and established an honest to goodness film school in a state that offers too few high-class options for learning cinema through the lens of a camera?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Wouldn&#8217;t it be brilliant<\/em> if someone high up in the UIUC food chain actually took me\u00a0seriously and made it happen? <em>Brilliant<\/em>, I&#8217;d say!<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Press release on the Web site of the University of Southern California about a $2 million donation from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner that will establish a new exhibition space and archive in their School of Cinematic Arts.
