Please support the artists and their work, attend screenings and events, and otherwise become active in our esoteric little world!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MFHQ &amp; YOU:<br \/>\nWe\u2019re Right Back after the Commercial Movie Break<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Apart from helping <strong>Ma JaPan<\/strong> break out the <strong>Christmas <\/strong>decorations for the first time in several years, your humble editor succumbed to the willful ennui usually associated with <strong>Thanksgiving <\/strong>family visits. The expected television time weighted heavily in favor of the nieces and nephew (read: <strong>Disney Channel<\/strong>) with barely any football in sight now that <strong>Pappy <\/strong>is watching comfortably from on high. Normally this is not a point where one innocently breaks out the unknown, e.g. the movies of <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond, to see what their kin thinks of it, necessitating a resignation to watch whatever someone else puts on the tube. <strong>Brother JaPan<\/strong> broke out <strong>IRON MAN 2<\/strong>, a workmanlike comic-book tale that didn\u2019t blow us away. Ma JaPan insisted we try something more mature with <strong>IT\u2019S COMPLICATED<\/strong>, a decent adultery dramedy that basked in the old pro charms of <strong>Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin<\/strong>, and a sorely underused <strong>Steve Martin<\/strong>. Luckily, <strong>Disney <\/strong>positioned its <strong>Pixar <\/strong>stable as primetime offerings from which we gleaned <strong>THE INCREDIBLES<\/strong> (yay!) and <strong>CARS <\/strong>(semi-yay!), while Saturday night yielded to the horrible puns of <strong>Chicago <\/strong>horror host <strong>Svengoolie <\/strong>and the second hour of <strong>William Castle<\/strong>\u2019s<strong> STRAIT-JACKET<\/strong> starring <strong>Joan Crawford<\/strong>. And at long last, Ma JaPan and yours truly joined the Indiana Pankokes (yes, with children) on a movie sojourn \u2013 to a <em>real <\/em>small-town theater, not the multiplex \u2013 for Disney\u2019s new animated Rapunzel <em>redux<\/em>, <strong>TANGLED<\/strong>, which hit a nice median between Mouse House tradition and Pixar contemporary majesty. Not too dastardly a dip into the <strong>Hollywood <\/strong>deep end, we say!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>PRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a title=\"Illini Film &amp; Video :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.illinifilmandvideo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong><\/a> gang behind an upcoming full-length project, called <strong>SNOWBOUND <\/strong>for the moment, will be holding auditions later today, <strong>Saturday, December 4, 2-4 p.m.<\/strong>, in <strong>Room 259 <\/strong>of the <strong>English Building<\/strong> on the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> campus. A notice sent through the IFV mailing list describes several open roles seemingly drawn from the \u201ccollege student archetype\u201d hat (jock, sorority girls, religious, realist, etc.) and provides a plot crunch: \u201cIt\u2019s the Nineties, and it\u2019s the Saturday before winter break in a small college. Three groups are driving home and get caught in a terrible snow storm. Since there is only one road out of town, they all get stuck around the same area, which happens to be by a slightly off-campus school building occupied by a single janitor. He allows them in\u2026\u201d and we\u2019ll stop right there to allow your mind to contemplate the creepy possibilities. Any which way, show up this weekend to show \u2018em what you can do or write<strong> illinifilmandvideo [at] gmail [dot] com<\/strong> to make sure you\u2019re on the radar as potential cast or crew. We\u2019re not lost on the irony that <strong>Mother Nature<\/strong> finally dumped snow on the C-U last night, just in time for this. Coincidence? <em>You <\/em>decide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MERCH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Good old-fashioned snooping once again rewarded us at the <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong>, this time confirming that Chicago-based <strong>Questar Home Video<\/strong> will be releasing <a title=\"Dreamscape Cinema :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamscapecinema.com\/index-dsc.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dreamscape Cinema<\/strong><\/a> family drama <strong>SHEEBA <\/strong>to DVD on <strong>Tuesday, January 18, 2011<\/strong>! Shot in <strong>Champaign County<\/strong> under the title <strong>CRAB ORCHARD<\/strong> which briefly changed to <strong>SO OTHERS MAY LIVE, SHEEBA<\/strong> is the earliest full-blown production from Champaign studio Dreamscape (excepting the super low-budget <strong>LINK<\/strong>) and has faced quite an uphill struggle to get this far. <a title=\"SHEEBA @ Amazon.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sheeba-Dylan-Patton\/dp\/B0041LATE6\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1291353925&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">It looks to be in good hands with Questar<\/a> upon reviewing the label\u2019s catalog, although <a title=\"SHEEBA @ Questar Home Video\" href=\"http:\/\/www.questarhomevideo.com\/shopexd.asp?id=1111\" target=\"_blank\">their <strong>SHEEBA <\/strong>listing provides no other details<\/a> such as whether disc extras or a Blu-ray edition are in the cards. We\u2019re sure to hear more as next month approaches and hope this is a good omen that the rest of the Dreamscape stable \u2013 <strong>DISCONNECT, ACT YOUR AGE, DISPOSABLE<\/strong> \u2013 will not take seven years to hit the marketplace as did <strong>SHEEBA<\/strong>, which stars <strong>Dylan Patton, Ed Asner<\/strong>, and <strong>Judge Reinhold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We also confirmed with filmmaker <strong>Ed Glaser<\/strong> that the <strong>February 11<\/strong> date cited in <strong>CUBiz <\/strong>two weeks ago is for the DVD release of <strong>PRESS START 2 CONTINUE<\/strong>, not a public premiere. However, we\u2019re pretty darn certain that<strong> <a title=\"Dark Maze Studios :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.darkmaze.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dark Maze Studios<\/a><\/strong> will let us know when Zack, Lin-Ku, Sam, and the rest will resume kicking butt at a screening venue near us!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>PHILANTHROPY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many citizens of the C-U had been hitting up their friends throughout November to vote in the \u201c<strong>Pepsi Refresh Project<\/strong>\u201d sponsored by <strong>Pepsi-Cola<\/strong> brands, wherein a monthly tally of public votes on all manner of community improvement proposals would earn the winners a cash grant to help make their projects happen. We guess the health controversy regarding children and soda-pop product is not a deterrent for the board of the <a title=\"Orpheum Children's Science Museum :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/orpheumkids.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Orpheum Children\u2019s Science Museum<\/strong><\/a> to accept Pepsi prize money as they have been gunning for the largest award &#8211; $250,000, allotted for \u201corganizations who can dedicate a lot of time and resources\u201d \u2013 in the \u201cEducation\u201d category. As your humble editor witnessed two years ago as part of the <strong>Brainsmart Productions <\/strong>wolf pack that shot (and blew) chunks of <strong>WEREWOLF CEMETERY IV<\/strong> on the premises, her auditorium desperately needed all the help it could get. Now that much of the ceiling and balconies have been restored, the Orpheum folks plan to use that $250K to repair the stage floor and light rigging system as well as purchase and install a fire safety system. A goal has always been to open up that dilapidated space as an all-ages performance center; <a title=\"Restore the Orpheum @ Pepsi Refresh Challenge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.refresheverything.com\/restoretheorpheum\" target=\"_blank\">click here for the Pepsi Orpheum profile<\/a>, watch the video featuring the partially restored auditorium, and vote for them early and often if you would. Despite the fact the November voting has ended, it seems that non-winning entries in all categories \u2013 Health, Arts &amp; Culture, Food &amp; Shelter, The Planet, Neighborhoods, and Education \u2013 are carried over to the next month, meaning that the Orpheum ranks #158 in December in their category\/price bracket. Give \u2018em a boost, dearest readers!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MEDIA LINKS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even though <strong>CUBiz <\/strong>may be lean on content during the holidays, we certainly won\u2019t lack for things to read, heed, and act upon as proved by the following paragraph filled with links aplenty! We\u2019ll begin with yet another central <strong>Illinois <\/strong>celebrity sighting, this of acclaimed actor <strong>Daniel Day-Lewis<\/strong> accompanying producers of the <strong>Steven Spielberg <\/strong>picture <strong>LINCOLN <\/strong>on a tour of historic <strong>Abraham Lincoln<\/strong> sites in <strong>Springfield <\/strong>two weeks ago, <a title=\"Famed actor Daniel Day-Lewis tours Springfield for LINCOLN :: The State Journal-Register\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sj-r.com\/carousel\/x151220461\/Actor-Daniel-Day-Lewis-visits-Springfield-to-research-Lincoln-role\" target=\"_blank\">according to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>State Journal-Register<\/strong><\/span><\/a>; given that Day-Lewis\u2019 involvement was announced the very same day, the occurrence feels more symbolic than anything. (At least <a title=\"You can have your LINCOLN :: Tim Cain 'blog, The Herald &amp; Review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.herald-review.com\/app\/blogs\/blogs\/?p=1467\" target=\"_blank\">we can spare the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Decatur Herald &amp; Review<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s <strong>Tim Cain<\/strong> a ticket<\/a> on the <strong>LINCOLN <\/strong>train, should it roll back through Illinois for actual shooting.) We then move from one bright star to the lack of glittering lights \u2013 let alone an entire marquee \u2013 out front at the <strong>Virginia Theater<\/strong>, about which the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>News-Gazette<\/strong><\/span> article parade has yet to subside. At least we now know that the concession areas on both floors will be completely renovated when the Virginia reopens on <strong>December 31<\/strong>, if you <a title=\"Events Calendar :: The Virginia Theater\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thevirginia.org\/index2.html\" target=\"_blank\">trust their partly revamped Web site<\/a>, or<strong> January 1<\/strong>, if <a title=\"Ohio contractor presents Virginia Theater marquee options to park district :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/community-events\/2010-11-27\/board-pick-3-virginia-marquee-finalists.html\" target=\"_blank\">you believe the most recent article<\/a>. As for the marquee itself, writer <strong>Patrick Wade<\/strong> <a title=\"Wagner Electric Sign Co. marquee evaluation :: Patrick Wade 'blog, The News-Gazette\" href=\"[http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/blogs\/voice-vote\/2010-11\/letter-marquee-company-champaign-park-district.html\" target=\"_blank\">reproduced on his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">N-G<\/span> Weblog<\/a>, \u201cVoice Vote,\u201d the assessment offered by <strong>Ohio<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Wagner Electric Sign Company<\/strong> to the <strong>Champaign Park District<\/strong> as to why the Forties-era ornamentation needed to come down from the Virginia fa\u00e7ade; the same firm has also presented concept sketches for a replacement they would fabricate. <strong>Seth Fein<\/strong> of <strong>SmilePolitely<\/strong> skips over the structural issues and <a title=\"How to attract more people to the Virginia :: SmilePolitely.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/opinion\/yes_virginia_there_is_a_better_way\/\" target=\"_blank\">offers several suggestions<\/a> as to how the Virginia could improve its offerings to the C-U, which are all fine in theory (save the tired \u201calcohol is necessary\u201d mantra) but certainly warrant discussion. Speaking of taxing thoughts, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">N-G<\/span> also reports on this weekend\u2019s Christmas festivities in downtown Champaign which will <a title=\"Fun, games available for children at the Orpheum this weekend :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/community-events\/2010-11-29\/forecast-calls-family-fun-orpheum.html\" target=\"_blank\">incorporate Orpheum activities for the little ones<\/a>, although it pains us to see pictures of a makeshift slalom contraption erected in the auditorium when it would be so more becoming with werewolves or, better yet, movie projection.
