On Friday, February 25, C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> will celebrate five years\u2019 worth of blogging all that is characteristic of the movies of Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond! Not only that, we\u2019ll join the 5\/500 club shortly thereafter when we post for the 500th time. We\u2019re unsure quite how astounding an achievement this really <\/em>is, but at the least it\u2019s proof positive that we\u2019re bound, determined, and stubborn enough to keep CUBlog <\/strong>afloat for your entertainment and education. That said, we\u2019re in a take-and-give mood here at the Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong>. Starting right after the 25th, when we publish your humble editor\u2019s annual \u201cIn My Backyard<\/strong>\u201d essay, we\u2019d like to feature your <\/em>words about living la vida cinema<\/em> in MICRO-FILM Country<\/strong>! Please send us no more than 2,000 words total<\/a> describing five significant movie milestones you\u2019ve encountered in or near the C-U during the past five years<\/strong>! You could recall awesome theatrical shows, impeccable video viewing, sublime on-set achievements, once-in-a-lifetime celebrity encounters, or anecdotes so uniquely dazzling that even we <\/em>aren\u2019t smart enough to come up with them as examples! EXHIBITION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Veteran independent filmmaker Mike Trippiedi <\/strong>of Champaign has announced his feature drama, AMBER ROSE<\/strong><\/a>, will have its World Premiere at the Washington D.C. Independent Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> which will take place March 3-13<\/strong> in the nation\u2019s capital. Location and full schedule for the 13th edition of DCIFF, including satellite classes, seminars, live music after hours, and an \u201cIndependent Summit on the Hill,\u201d have yet to be announced but we\u2019re positive Trippiedi will fill us in once he\u2019s forwarded the details. Congratulations to the cast and crew of the movie! We hope this will be only the first of many play dates worldwide for the production, created completely in Champaign-Urbana.<\/p>\n

PRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

An e-mail update issued by the Illini Film & Video<\/strong> club at the University of Illinois<\/strong> listed information about a spring semester \u201cindependent study\u201d through Krannert Art Museum<\/strong><\/a> involving the video recording of \u201cseveral museum events for museum Web site, Facebook<\/strong>, YouTube<\/strong>, and other public relation needs. The candidate will work closely with museum staff to design, develop, and present the final product.\u201d Videos will provide a \u201csignificant record\u201d of KAM\u2019s 50th anniversary year in operation. MERCH<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the heels of our Dark Maze Studios<\/strong> \u201cImages of the Week<\/strong>\u201d posted last Friday<\/a>, we received a deluge of update goodness from the Champaign group particularly in regards to PRESS START 2 CONTINUE<\/strong><\/a>, for which director Ed Glaser<\/strong> is assembling a trailer and finalizing the DVD for March 11<\/strong> release. We finally know about extras, which will include a filmmakers\u2019 commentary track, a separate cast commentary, a making-of featurette, and the short adventure PRESS START: BIO-HAPHAZARD<\/strong>, with more goodies soon to be announced. Amusingly, the press release encourages fans to stage PRESS START 2<\/strong> viewing parties and send the filmmakers evidence (e.g., photos) for posting on the Internet. We highly doubt your humble editor will allow such a throw-down to take place at MFHQ <\/strong>but it does <\/em>sound fun. What sounds even more <\/em>fun to our ears, but is not even alluded to in the update, is a PRESS START 2<\/strong> local theatrical premiere! Hmm, when <\/em>in the world could that possibly take place? (Hint:<\/em> Pay attention to our second post later this afternoon. Put our \u201c2\u201d and PRESS START 2<\/strong> together. Cry out in elation. Repeat.)<\/p>\n

SUBMISSIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wearing your thinking tuques, friendly neighborhood filmmakers? It\u2019s time once again for you to find events at which to show your masterpieces to the world! Two weeks ago, we told you about the Kansas City FilmFest; today we clue you in on something called KC CreepFest<\/strong><\/a>, apparently returning after a 2010 hiatus on October 28-29<\/strong> of this year. To be fair, festival brains Big Atom Productions<\/strong> has been busy with its own filmic aspirations<\/a> including CADAVERELLA <\/strong>and BONNIE & CLYDE VS. DRACULA<\/strong>, the latter recently picked up by Indican Pictures<\/strong><\/a> for release next month. Hit up Big Atom\u2019s Jennifer Friend<\/strong> at jenn [at] bigatomproductions [dot] com<\/strong> if you have regional horror\/grindhouse of the Midwest persuasion that you\u2019d be interested in seeing play Missouri <\/strong>this fall.<\/p>\n

The players behind two long-standing Windy City fests are stocking up to shock the city folk with outr\u00e9 <\/em>cinema. More immediate are the needs of the 18th annual Chicago Underground Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, presented by IFP\/Chicago<\/strong>, for which the regular submission deadline passes next Tuesday, February 1<\/strong>, with the late deadline coming on Tuesday, March 15<\/strong>. CUFF will \u201cconfront the tired, the market-driven, and the predictable\u201d at the Gene Siskel Film Center<\/strong> in Chicago <\/strong>from June 2-9<\/strong>. While experimental work has a home at CUFF, it is the exclusive province of the Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival<\/strong><\/a>, sponsored by Chicago Filmmakers<\/strong>, which will stage its 23rd annual edition June 23-26<\/strong> at CF and other venues. Final deadline to enter is April 15<\/strong>. The mission of Onion City is to offer \u201ca wide variety of contemporary experimental works, focused on artistic excellence but also with an eye towards representing differing styles, forms, and nationalities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last but not least, the 17th annual Brainwash <\/strong>\u201cDrive-In Bike-In Walk-In\u201d Movie Festival<\/strong> will drop independent movie madness on Oakland, CA<\/strong>, in August<\/strong>. This celebration of the lo-fi and quirky has three deadlines with escalating entry fees: the \u201cEarly Bird\u201d accepting screeners postmarked by April 15<\/strong>, the \u201cOn Time\u201d accepting screeners postmarked by May 1<\/strong>, and the proverbial \u201cLate\u201d accepting screeners postmarked by May 10<\/strong>.
