Please support the artists and their work, attend screenings and events, and otherwise become active in our esoteric little world!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MFHQ &amp; YOU:<br \/>\nThis is Not Just a Weekly Movie Column, It\u2019s Our Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On many academics\u2019 minds this past week is the passing at age 61 of venerated <strong>University of Chicago<\/strong> film scholar, author, and researcher <strong>Miriam Hansen<\/strong>, whom we weren\u2019t familiar with despite her apparently groundbreaking critical theories taking into account social and political reverberations when discussing the worldwide influence of cinema, particularly that of <strong>Hollywood<\/strong>\u2019s silent and golden ages on early 20th century audiences. Reading briefly through some of these references and remembrances simply reminds us to reinforce in your minds, dearest readers, that the discourse here on <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> and in all current and eventual spin-offs is intended to provide more than casual reading on any given day. At least your humble editor would <em>like <\/em>to think a bigger picture has been preserved between all the movies of <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond. Look for our annual state of the C-Union address, \u201c<strong>In My Backyard<\/strong>,\u201d to elaborate on such things in the very near future!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>EVENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Always failing to telegraph its approach on the MICRO-radar until it\u2019s too late for us to do anything but hope the next time will be our first time attending, the <strong>Big Muddy Film Festival<\/strong> will return this weekend for its 33rd annual showcase of independent and international cinema tucked deep in the <strong>Illinois <\/strong>tip. All shows and satellite events will take place on or near the campus of <strong>Southern Illinois University<\/strong> in <strong>Carbondale<\/strong>. Guests include <strong>Nigerian <\/strong>director <strong>Femi Odugbemi<\/strong> and jurors\/filmmakers <strong>Kerry Laitala, Shanti Thakur<\/strong>, and <strong>Josh Jones<\/strong>; marquee screenings include a midnight revival of <strong>John Waters\u2019 PINK FLAMINGOS<\/strong>, the silent <strong>MY BEST GIRL<\/strong> with <strong>Mary Pickford<\/strong>, the radical cult item <strong>THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR<\/strong>, and a new documentary on <strong>SPOOK <\/strong>called <strong>INFILTRATING HOLLYWOOD<\/strong> which creators <strong>Christine Acham<\/strong> and <strong>Clifford Ward<\/strong> will attend. <a title=\"Big Muddy Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/bigmuddyfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">You can find complete information on Big Muddy 33 right here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Closer to home, organizers <strong>Sasan Shabrou<\/strong> and <strong>Ludo van der Hout<\/strong> have <a title=\"Buttered Corn on the Cob Film Festival @ Gladius Arts\" href=\"http:\/\/butteredcornonthecobfilmfestival.gladiusarts.com\/Welcome.html\" target=\"_blank\">updated the Web site<\/a> of the previously mentioned <strong>Buttered Corn on the Cob Film Festival<\/strong>, revealing it will take place at the new-look <strong>88 Broadway<\/strong> entertainment venue at <strong>Lincoln Square Village<\/strong> in downtown Urbana on <strong>Sunday, April 3<\/strong> \u2013 a mere<em> five days<\/em> before the next <strong><a title=\"New Art Film Festival @ Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/New-Art-Film-Festival\/164582210255897\" target=\"_blank\">New Art Film Festival<\/a>.<\/strong> Will our fair twin cities support two events within the same week that \u201chonor the independent drive Film Makers of the Midwest have to create films without the support of the Hollywood machine [and] also be a chance for film makers of the Midwest to come together and network together,\u201d per the Buttered Corn mission statement?
