Please support the artists and their work, attend screenings and events, and otherwise become active in our esoteric little world!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MFHQ &amp; YOU:<br \/>\nOur First Fast Five and the Potentially Furious Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When your humble editor was but a wee lad, a joke circulated around the Pankoke household that he loved the number five. We\u2019re having a hard time verifying <em>why <\/em>this came to be, other than imagining he must have received a very special present for his fifth birthday or, upon reaching said longevity, figured out he could proudly fill up an entire hand with outstretched digits prompted by doting adults asking about his age. Brandishing a similar sense of cutesy self-awareness, <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> crosses the mid-point between nothingness and a full decade of existence later tonight, <strong>Friday, February 25<\/strong>, when five years earlier we flipped this particular switch to \u201con\u201d at the <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong> and added <a title=\"In My Backyard :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1\" target=\"_blank\">our first bit of hopeful musing<\/a> to the Interwebs. You might <a title=\"Archive for March 2006 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?m=200603\" target=\"_blank\">find it amusing<\/a> to <a title=\"Archive for April 2006 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?m=200604\" target=\"_blank\">spend a few minutes<\/a> <a title=\"Archive for May 2006 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?m=200605\" target=\"_blank\">visiting our past<\/a> to recall where we came from, yet it would be more pertinent to consider how <strong>CUBlog <\/strong>could mature into something more formidable than we\u2019ve managed so far. After the grown-up <strong>Mr. Pankoke<\/strong> is allowed to cut loose on shared concerns in his annual \u201c<strong>In My Backyard<\/strong>\u201d treatise next week, we\u2019re going to hit our dearest readers hard for their opinions on what the Confidential effort means to them and how they can help this forum for the movies of <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond sing loud and strong instead of merely humming along. Thanks for reading along this far, the journey has only just begun!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>EXHIBITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Chances are good most residents of the C-U might answer the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s the name of that dance movie they made here?\u201d with \u201c<strong>LEADING LADIES<\/strong>!\u201d and they\u2019d be correct, if not in the most absolute sense. It seems the creation of \u201cdance for camera\u201d has been catching on with <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> students in the <a title=\"Department of Dance at the Univesity of Illinois :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/dance.uiuc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Department of Dance<\/strong><\/a>, often as final or thesis projects. Your humble editor attended a mid-semester campus screening a while back with local and non-local samples of the genre, which melds original dance choreography with edited cinematography to create a unique sensory experience, coupled with a live site-specific performance down the hallway from screening room <strong>Armory 101<\/strong>. The general public rarely sees this work and, as class assignments early in one\u2019s career, much of it probably sits on the proverbial shelf upon the makers\u2019 graduation from higher learning to the real world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That is, unless the real world beckons for one to continue working and exploring in higher learning. UI MFA candidate <strong>Catrina Choate-Heretoiu<\/strong> will present her thesis dance for camera, <strong>PROBABILITY OF POSSIBILITIES<\/strong>, this <strong>Sunday, February 27, 3 p.m.<\/strong>, in <strong>Room 62<\/strong> (lower level) of the <strong>Krannert Art Museum, 500 E. Peabody Dr., Urbana, IL<\/strong>, and briefly answer questions alongside husband and collaborator <strong>Bogdan Heretoiu<\/strong> about the half-hour piece inspired by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Little Prince<\/strong><\/span>. \u201cBeginning to produce dance for camera films has been a long-standing dream of ours, so we used the MFA Thesis opportunity to start our collaboration for film,\u201d <strong>Bucharest <\/strong>native Heretoiu explains to <strong>CUBlog<\/strong>. \u201cThis is the first of many projects we hope to develop using local talent and resources.\u201d The couple will settle in C-U as Choate-Heretoiu has accepted a position at the dance school, while Heretoiu pursues freelance production work, filmmaking instruction, and writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>PROBABILITY OF POSSIBILTIES<\/strong>\u2019 cast is comprised mainly of undergraduate dance students, with leads <strong>Kamilla Kinard<\/strong> and <strong>Luis Vazquez<\/strong> essaying roles comparable to the Prince and the Fox characters of <strong>Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry<\/strong>\u2019s famous novella, along with several tango dancers from the community. Working with university students as assistants on the \u201cmostly improvisational\u201d shoot last fall in several C-U locations, Heretoiu and Choate-Heretoiu drew on the latter\u2019s experience in performing and teaching ballet, modern dance, and movement. Of their aesthetic approach, Heretoiu reasons \u201cin a world and time that seems to move faster and faster by the minute, we attempted to slow down as much as possible, taking a look at the small details, gestures, and body language that are natural yet often overlooked by modern society.\u201d Readers should look to <strong>CUBlog <\/strong>on Saturday for a follow-up on <strong>POSSIBILITIES<\/strong> featuring a teaser trailer that patiently focuses on the understated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAs I am very new to the area, I am still fascinated by the amount of local talent and the potential it holds for anyone wanting to produce new works in the field of visual arts,\u201d continues Heretoiu, who earned theater and film degrees in <strong>Romania<\/strong>, a film production degree in Miami, and has also established several personal outlets for his own production and teaching (<a title=\"Bogdan Heretoiu :: Personal Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arts4hope.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Arts4Hope<\/strong><\/a>), writing and philosophy (<a title=\"Evolutionary Exploration :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evolutionaryexploration.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Evolutionary Exploration<\/strong><\/a>), and stage collaborations with Choate-Heretoiu (<a title=\"Memento Vivere Dance Theater Company :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mementoviveredt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Memento Vivere Dance Theater Company<\/strong><\/a>). \u201cKeeping in mind [<strong>PROBABILITY OF POSSIBILTIES<\/strong>] was produced without a budget and virtually without a set-knowledgeable crew, imagine what can be achieved if people bring together their passion and resources! Consider this an invitation to connect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>EVENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What\u2019s that buzzing in your ear? Behold a not-very-subliminal reminder that \u201ckiller wasps\u201d will rule the 28th annual <a title=\"Insect Fear Film Festival @ UIUC EGSA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.life.illinois.edu\/entomology\/egsa\/ifff.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Insect Fear Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> this <strong>Saturday, February 26<\/strong>, beginning at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> in <strong>Foellinger Auditorium, 709 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana<\/strong>, on the University of Illinois campus! An informational and entertaining jaunt presented by the <strong>UI Entomology Graduate Student Association<\/strong> in league with Entomology department chair <strong>May Berenbaum<\/strong> and former <strong>Unit for Cinema Studies<\/strong> head <strong>Richard Leskosky<\/strong>, IFFF fills out the Foellinger foyer with displays including live and preserved specimens to show attendees the vital place insects have in our ecology. Fact gives way to fiction once inside the auditorium, however, as Berenbaum introduces movies that mostly place our multi-legged invertebrate friends in an exaggerated and non-congenial light. This year, the old school is represented by <strong>MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL<\/strong> (1957), an obscure potboiler about giant prehistoric wasp-like creatures surfacing in <strong>Africa<\/strong>, while the new (and mostly direct-to video\/television) guard is embodied in <strong>SWARMED <\/strong>(2005), a made-in-<strong>Canada <\/strong>production for <strong>SyFy <\/strong>starring <strong>Michael Shanks<\/strong> and <strong>Carol Alt<\/strong> with an appearance by righteous B-movie dude <strong>Tim Thomerson<\/strong>. <strong>SWARMED <\/strong>producer <strong>Gordon Yang<\/strong> will be in attendance to introduce and answer questions about the movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Within a two-year span immediately following the Millennium, your humble editor first encountered the fascinating art-world spin on media that is designed to be exhibited in non-theatrical spaces, particularly with a <a title=\"Bill Viola :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.billviola.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bill Viola<\/strong><\/a> installation featured at the UI\u2019s <strong>Krannert Art Museum<\/strong> and a multi-projector performance by <a title=\"Public Works Productions\/Tape-Beatles :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/pwp.detritus.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Tape-beatles<\/strong><\/a> at the <a title=\"University Galleries @ Center for Visual Arts, Illinois State University\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cfa.ilstu.edu\/galleries\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>University Galleries<\/strong> of the <\/a><strong><a title=\"University Galleries @ C\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cfa.ilstu.edu\/galleries\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Visual Arts<\/a>, Illinois State University<\/strong>, in <strong>Normal<\/strong>. We\u2019ve seen very little of their nature in the area since then, but University Galleries is currently filling that void by presenting a world premiere \u201cvideo triptych\u201d by <strong>Meredith Zielke<\/strong> and <strong>Yoni Goldstein<\/strong> entitled <strong>THE JETTISONED<\/strong>. Three channels of footage, one each filmed in <strong>Chicago, Warsaw<\/strong>, and <strong>Mexico City<\/strong>, are cast simultaneously on adjacent surfaces and \u201cactivates a sensorial experience that sends the viewer into an opulent darkness where history is performed through living bodies, both stilled and silenced,\u201d per the gallery notes. This prolific team has created dozens of works, <a title=\"Standing Point Films :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/standingpoint.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">as documented on their Web site<\/a>, and a reception for the artists will take place this <strong>Saturday, February 26, 5-7 p.m.<\/strong>, at the gallery, <strong>110 Center for the Visual Arts<\/strong> (near the intersection of <strong>Beaufort St.<\/strong> and <strong>Vernon Ave.<\/strong>) on the ISU campus, which will host the triptych through <strong>Sunday, April 4<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>SUBMISSIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lucky you, our lateness in posting this week has allowed us to include information from a last-minute blast we\u2019ve just received, a reminder that the regular deadline for submitting work to the <a title=\"Blue Whiskey Independent Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/bwiff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Blue Whiskey Independent Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> is next F<strong>riday, March 4<\/strong>, with the final deadline coming on <strong>Friday, May 6<\/strong>.
