Please support the artists and their work, attend screenings and events, and otherwise become active in our esoteric little world!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MFHQ &amp; YOU:<br \/>\nHit You With Our Best (Warning) Shot \u2026 Again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we chill at the <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong>, heads spinning not from alcoholic consumption but the sheer high of perpetuating <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> for five continuous years, we began to wonder which calendar dates constitute the vital ones in our history. Certainly, the most important milestone up to now occurred on <strong>October 29<\/strong>, when we unleashed the first full-blown issue of <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong>, and we could easily argue the <strong>February 25<\/strong> launch date of <strong>CUBlog <\/strong>is right up there on the list. Yet, one particularly seminal date we rarely invoke came and went yesterday, <strong>March 3<\/strong>, the afternoon of which we picked up <strong>MF <\/strong>progenitor <strong>MICRO-FILM: The Warning Shot<\/strong> from a local copy shop in 1999. We can\u2019t help but recall it at this time every year since <strong>MF:TWS<\/strong> was our first publishing attempt; <a title=\"It was 10 years ago this week\u2026 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=564\" target=\"_blank\">we\u2019ll direct you to this 2009 post<\/a> in which we wax nostalgic over it. Although slight in multiple senses of the word, much of the \u2018zine\u2019s contextual heft could be found in lengthy pronouncements delivered by your not-yet-humbled editor in his late twenties prime, the closest we\u2019ve come to establishing a <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> manifesto. Today, our film coverage efforts have turned geographically inward towards the local instead of the national and international; so has our philosophy on what matters within our so-called \u201cempire.\u201d You\u2019ll certainly glean echoes of our current mindset this weekend when we post \u201c<strong>In My Backyard<\/strong>,\u201d after which the world at large will receive a rare <strong>C-U Confidential<\/strong> press release reiterating the completion of <strong>CUBlog<\/strong>\u2019s first half-a-decade and hinting at related things to come, but we might just be ready to birth a brand new mission statement about our current purpose here in <strong>MICRO-FILM Country<\/strong>. We always hope our actions speak louder than our words \u2013 even though much of said action <em>relies <\/em>on potent words as its basis \u2013 and trust our dearest readers understand that we believe we\u2019re all in this together to foster and preserve our movie arts. Be warned, however. Firing a new <strong>Warning Shot<\/strong> off the bow of the good ship <strong>Chambana <\/strong><em>will <\/em>produce a mild aftershock in its wake, let alone a more definitive wake-up call.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>EVENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We don\u2019t have the time this week to properly recount our wonderful <strong>Sunday, February 27<\/strong>, other than to say we enjoyed a non-stop C-U film culture day <em>without <\/em>attending a film festival or standing sentry on a movie set. Therefore, we\u2019d like to thank everyone involved in this three-act structure taking us across the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> campus while telling a compelling story about education and coming to self-fruition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the first act, film-artist-to-be <strong>Skye Marcia<\/strong> met your humble editor at the <strong>Espresso Royale<\/strong> on <strong>Goodwin <\/strong>and <strong>Oregon <\/strong>streets in <strong>Urbana <\/strong>to discuss her experiences working as <a title=\"DISPOSABLE :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dispmovie.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">a wardrobe designer and actress on her father\u2019s productions<\/a> while exploring different directions at the <strong>Southern Illinois University<\/strong> film school in <strong>Carbondale<\/strong>, including her penultimate thesis project she will begin shooting this weekend. (<em>Her world and the lacking state of area movie-making education will be explored in <\/em><strong>C-U Confidential issue 5<\/strong><em> this April!<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the complicated second act involving three distinct plot developments, your editor relocated a bit farther north on Goodwin to the <strong>Entomology Department<\/strong> in <strong>Morrill Hall<\/strong>, wherein chair <strong>May Berenbaum<\/strong> and husband\/cinema writer <strong>Rich Leskosky<\/strong> hosted brunch for <a title=\"Gordon Yang @ IMDb.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0945991\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Toronto <\/strong>movie producer <strong>Gordon Yang<\/strong><\/a>, a guest of <a title=\"Insect Fear Film Festival @ UIUC EGSA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.life.illinois.edu\/entomology\/egsa\/ifff.html\" target=\"_blank\">the prior evening\u2019s <strong>Insect Fear Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>. After coffee talk involving obscure species, the convenience of <strong>Netflix<\/strong>, and beetle-derived food additives, your editor accompanied Yang and surprise companion <strong>Ashlea Thomsen<\/strong> of <strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong> to the <strong>Illini Union<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Courtyard Caf\u00e9<\/strong>, where Yang discussed working through the production ranks during the Eighties and Nineties to become an active producer and second-unit director on features, television series, and mini-series, most based in <strong>Canada <\/strong>such as the IFFF entry <strong>SWARMED<\/strong>. (<em>His career will be examined on <\/em><strong>CUBlog <\/strong><em>or the <\/em><strong>MICRO-FILM News Blog<\/strong><em> shortly!<\/em>) Several observations and anecdotes later, the filmic trio journeyed back south on Goodwin to the <strong>Bread Company<\/strong> at which they met performing arts locals gathered to help make our visitor feel welcome. Two hours rocketed by in the company of commercial photographer <strong>Jason Lindsey<\/strong>, filmmaking hopefuls <strong>Chris <\/strong>and <strong>Shanna DeSouza<\/strong>, movie man-about-town <strong>Bill Kephart<\/strong>, eclectic entrepreneurs <strong>Lisa Cerezo<\/strong> and <strong>Jace Hoppes<\/strong>, and IFV stalwart <strong>Michael Bach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our exciting third act began at the bistro as Berenbaum and Leskosky arrived just before 3 p.m. to accompany Yang back to his hotel, at which time the group dispersed and your editor jetted to the <strong>Krannert Art Museum<\/strong> on <strong>Peabody <\/strong>and <strong>Fifth <\/strong>streets in <strong>Champaign<\/strong>. Artistic team <a title=\"Bogdan Heretoiu :: Personal Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arts4hope.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bogdan Heretoiu<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Catrina Choate-Heretoiu<\/strong> greeted him outside lower-level <strong>Room 62<\/strong> with smiles and handshakes followed by quick seating in a lecture room filled with students, family members, and participants in Choate-Heretoiu\u2019s thesis \u201cdance for film,\u201d <strong>PROBABILITY OF POSSIBILTIES<\/strong>. (<em>Their efforts have already received play on <\/em><strong>CUBlog <\/strong><em><a title=\"C-U Biz-en-sc\u00e8ne: 02.25.2011 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=2938\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"IOW: Duo films dance thesis :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=2947\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>!<\/em>) A partial retelling of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Little Prince<\/strong><\/span> through gesture and movement, <a title=\"PROBABILITY OF POSSIBILITIES @ Vimeo.com\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/20414049\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>POSSIBILTIES <\/strong>dramatizes several encounters<\/a> between the Prince (<strong>Luis Vazquez<\/strong>) and Fox (<strong>Kamilla Kinard<\/strong>) while a \u201cGreek chorus\u201d of dancers reflects their growing friendship. After a credits roll and warm reception, the audience slowly thinned out as your editor took turns chatting with the Heretoius and the DeSouzas, who also managed to make Room 62 in time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This climax is followed by a <em>d\u00e9nouement <\/em>in which your editor frequented a nearby establishment quite appropriate for dialing down after such a day \u2013 <strong>Caff\u00e9 Paradiso<\/strong>, located mere blocks from the Goodwin store fronts where this roundabout adventure began. We now conclude our tale even though we\u2019ve spent more effort than expected telling it to you. Oh, well. We\u2019ll sleep when we\u2019re dead and, besides, morning-time coherence is <em>highly <\/em>overrated\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 3em; text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>SUBMISSIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We hadn\u2019t heard of the <strong>Milwaukee Underground Film Festival<\/strong> before now but we like the sound of it \u2013 despite \u201cMUFF,\u201d an acronym which <em>desperately <\/em>needs to be replaced <em>or <\/em>wielded brilliantly \u2013 so we\u2019re letting you know that submissions will be accepted through <strong>Friday, April 1<\/strong>, and <a title=\"Submission Form :: Milwaukee Underground Film Festival 2011\" href=\"http:\/\/mkeundergroundfilmfestival.blogspot.com\/2011\/02\/call-for-submissions-2011.html\" target=\"_blank\">you can download the official form here<\/a>. According to their Web site, the MUFF is \u201ca student-run, international film festival dedicated to showcasing contemporary works of film and video that innovate in form, technique, and content. This annual event exhibits independent films from all around the world. We are interested in publicly presenting the best in artistic, experimental, original, humorous, political, and visionary film and video work. In a habit continuing to this day, your humble editor initially thinks through his projects on paper instead of the computer, resulting in dozens of scrawled-over legal pads, sketch books, and other bound reams of paper piled together in boxes and on the shelves. Luckily, he remembered to date a good percentage of those notes and the earliest mention of <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> manifested March 3 in a blue-covered notebook dating from <strong>1998<\/strong>, exactly one year prior to the publication of <strong>MF:TWS<\/strong>. (We\u2019re happy he didn\u2019t go with an alternate title, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Shotgun<\/strong><\/span>, and wonder what his projected horror \u2018zine <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Faustus<\/strong><\/span> might have turned out like.) Coincidentally \u2013 at least, we <em>think <\/em>it\u2019s a coincidence \u2013 March 3, 1998, was the release date for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Get a Load of This<\/strong><\/span>, the <strong>Funky Butt Drum Club<\/strong> album <a title=\"C-U Biz-en-sc\u00e8ne: 02.18.2011 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=2908\" target=\"_blank\">mentioned in the <strong>Biz <\/strong>a couple of weeks ago<\/a>. We asked the boss this morning whether the timing was a little too perfect way back when, given his adoption of the track \u201c<strong>Not a Movie<\/strong>\u201d as an unofficial <strong>MF <\/strong>theme song, and he grumbled something about \u201cskiddles\u201d and \u201cheat up the booty\u201d before wandering into the other room. We\u2019ll try again when he\u2019s more awake.
