After the Thunderbird flew the coop, new owners reopened the space in the mid-Nineties\u00a0as\u00a0the &#8220;<strong>Brew &#8216;n&#8217; View<\/strong>&#8221; in hopes of attracting the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> college crowd with second-run Hollywood flicks, vintage crowd-pleasers (<strong>ANIMAL HOUSE<\/strong>, anyone?), and &#8211; the kicker &#8211; alcohol and pizza delivered right to your lazy ass in the theater. Alleged mismanagement and rifts with the folks behind the\u00a0&#8220;BnV&#8221; at <strong>The Vic<\/strong> in <strong>Chicago<\/strong> killed this venture, after which <strong>Ian Goldberg<\/strong> and friends moved in for the long haul. The Canopy tried sporadically to replicate the &#8220;BnV&#8221; concept as a second-tier attraction alongside their bread-and-butter music concerts, but eventually hung the concept out to dry<\/em>\u00a0&#8230; <strong>End flashback moment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Flashback moment 2<\/strong> &#8230; <em>Several years ago, a young filmmaker named <strong>Bradley Beesley<\/strong> scheduled a stop at <strong>The Highdive<\/strong> as part of a DIY tour promoting his hour-long documentary about the &#8220;sport&#8221; of catfish catching with one&#8217;s bare hands, <strong>OKIE NOODLING<\/strong>. To beef up the show&#8217;s running time, Beesley also gave the audience a peek at his work-in-progress about <strong>The Flaming Lips<\/strong> as well as an extremely cryptic trailer for a low-budget sci-fi opus starring the Lips&#8217; <strong>Wayne Coyne<\/strong> as an alien. <strong>Shout! Factory<\/strong> eventually released the former to DVD as <strong><a title=\"THE FEARLESS FREAKS @ Shout! Factory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shoutfactorystore.com\/prod.aspx?pfid=137&amp;sid=9F7F5A2A3DE54634B94D44A00B52CE23\" target=\"_blank\">THE FEARLESS FREAKS<\/a><\/strong> in 2005, while <strong>Echo Bridge Home Entertainment<\/strong> reissued the original <strong><a title=\"OKIE NOODLING @ Echo Bridge Home Entertainment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echobridgeentertainment.com\/dvd\/Okie_Noodling_51249\" target=\"_blank\">OKIE NOODLING<\/a><\/strong> (yes, <a title=\"OKIE NOODLING II :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.okienoodling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">there are two<\/a>) in 2007,\u00a0yet the<\/em> really <em>weird offering, <strong>CHRISTMAS ON MARS<\/strong>, has been nowhere to be found. Until\u00a0very recently<\/em>\u00a0&#8230; <strong>End flashback moment 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">We now return you to &#8220;Coming Soon&#8221; for a coda that will bring things into perspective and warrant a head scratch or two:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Sunday, November 16, 9:30 &amp; 11:30\u00a0p.m.<\/strong>: Seemingly out of the blue, the twain shall meet when the completed <strong>CHRISTMAS ON MARS<\/strong>, which resembles in its updated trailer the scraggly love child of <strong>THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT<\/strong> and <strong>SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS<\/strong>, has its C-U big-screen debut at the Canopy as part of a new movie series called &#8220;Pizza + Pitcher and Movie.&#8221; The concept sounds familiar, no? The Goldberg clan is trusting\u00a0that it will\u00a0catch on,\u00a0given the extensive schedule already mapped out, so we&#8217;ll see whether patrons find the experience refreshing or so, like, 1995. Incidentally, <strong>MARS<\/strong> will be shown again on <strong>Sunday, December 7<\/strong>, also at <strong>9:30 p.m.<\/strong>, and is the only brand-new movie on the entire &#8220;P+P&amp;M&#8221; slate. While one may question how legal\u00a0the Canopy&#8217;s other screenings are, the <strong>MARS<\/strong> two-fer is actually a legit public performance coordinated with <strong>Warner Bros.<\/strong>, which is releasing a\u00a0CD\/DVD edition today, <strong>Tuesday, November 11<\/strong>,\u00a0and the film&#8217;s theatrical distributor, <strong><a title=\"CHRISTMAS ON MARS @ Cinema Purgatorio\" href=\"http:\/\/christmasonmars.cinemapurgatorio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cinema Purgatorio<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0We won&#8217;t be getting one of the token 35mm prints making the rounds, by the way, so pixels it shall be. @ <strong>The Canopy Club, 708 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana.<\/strong> <a title=\"Movie schedule @ The Canopy Club\" href=\"http:\/\/www.canopyclub.com\/movies.php\" target=\"_blank\">Click for more<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Sunday, November 16,\u00a09 p.m.<\/strong>: Naturally, a good (if outdated) idea can&#8217;t go to waste, so leave it to the <strong>Nieto<\/strong> clan to debut a similar series &#8230; on the same day of the week &#8230;\u00a0during prime time\u00a0&#8230; in the\u00a0fall of 2008. Coincidence? Um, <em>sure<\/em> it is.\u00a0At least their &#8220;Sunday Night Cinema&#8221; will take place in downtown <strong>Champaign<\/strong> and within stumbling distance of the <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong>, so we won&#8217;t harp too long and hard about it. After a month of spies (<strong>GOLDFINGER<\/strong>), ghouls (<strong>HALLOWEEN, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD<\/strong>), and a little bit of the ultra-violence (<strong>A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, KILL BILL<\/strong>), the baristas will press &#8220;play&#8221; this weekend for <strong>THE BLUES BROTHERS<\/strong>, to be followed by <strong>ZOOLANDER<\/strong> (<strong>Nov. 23<\/strong>) and\u00a0<strong>FIGHT CLUB<\/strong> (<strong>Nov. 30<\/strong>).\u00a0Unique to this\u00a0variation are\u00a0drink specials inspired by the evening&#8217;s feature. If you dig, keep an eye on local publications for upcoming titles since the venue has no Web presence and, as we know, should probably be coy about promoting said titles for legal reasons.\u00a0@ <strong>Seven Saints, 32 E.
