If your humble editor had his way in a previous role as Production Manager of the late <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> publication <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Octopus<\/span><\/strong>, you might have been leafing through its <strong>April 20, 2001<\/strong> issue a decade ago bearing the following cover:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The Octopus, April 20-26, 2001 :: Collection of the Author\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_MFVerite_Octo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"543\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While refraining from actual subterfuge, he offered up this \u201cB\u201d design since the photo files given him to illustrate that week\u2019s cover story \u2013 a profile of <strong>Frank Black and the Catholics<\/strong> \u2013 were of less than stellar resolution. (We\u2019ll also clarify that the deliberately cheeky blurbs at the bottom of this mock-up did <em>not <\/em>make it to press.) Indirectly promoting that weekend\u2019s \u201c<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span> Gallery Walk<\/strong>,\u201d a precursor to the <strong>Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong>, this alternate front page for the alt-weekly called attention to his first attempt as C-U indie movie impresario, <strong>MICRO-FILM V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/strong>, which took place across the street from the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span> offices at <strong>The Highdive<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday, April 21<\/strong>, from <strong>11:30 a.m.<\/strong> to <strong>5 p.m. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tied in to \u201c<strong>Zineophilia<\/strong>,\u201d an exhibition of illustrative art and self-publishing staged at <strong>Southlynn Studios<\/strong> within the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span> environs, <strong>MICRO-FILM V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/strong> offered a quirky slate of shorts, previews, and the <strong>Portland<\/strong>-made road trip feature <strong>GOOD GRIEF<\/strong> which had come through the front gates of the <strong>Secret MICRO-FILM Headquarters<\/strong> in its earliest days. Locally made material included <strong>John May<\/strong>\u2019s stop-motion exercise <strong>ISOLATION<\/strong>, <strong>Mike Trippiedi<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cslasher film in rhyme\u201d <strong>BUCKY McSNEAD<\/strong>, <strong>Peter James Zielinski<\/strong>\u2019s spoof <strong>S.U.R.V.I.V.O.R.<\/strong>, <strong>Mike Stone<\/strong> and <strong>Andy McAllister<\/strong>\u2019s original <strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong> teaser, and a trailer for <strong>Hart D. Fisher<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>THE GARBAGE MAN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The pixilated Black Francis and friends received the cover honors out of deference to editor co-workers, but at least we can\u2019t say he didn\u2019t step up to the plate on behalf of the film brethren. In the present, we\u2019ll talk once more about \u201cZineophilia\u201d shortly in relation to next weekend\u2019s <strong>Midwest Zine Fest<\/strong> at the <strong>Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center<\/strong> and detail the role <strong>C-U Confidential<\/strong> will have in making the joint hop.
