\nThe Long and Short Form of It<\/strong><\/p>\n

Capping this super-busy week here on C-U Blogfidential<\/strong>, the Biz <\/strong>pretty much zapped our energies due to an incredibly dense (and unexpectedly sexy) \u201cLinks\u201d department, but it\u2019s all good as we switch mental gears for the weekend! Look for your humble editor to attend and volunteer at the IMC Film Festival<\/strong> in Urbana <\/strong>on Saturday, September 17<\/strong>, while viewing and drinking brew will be the order of his business on Sunday, September 18<\/strong>, at the Route 66 International Film Festival<\/strong> in Springfield<\/strong>. He may also get some rare on-the-set time with a student production between now and Sunday evening. Hard work on both CUBlog <\/strong>\u2013 the indie movie hub of Champaign<\/strong>, Urbana, and the cities beyond that never <\/em>seems to sleep \u2013 and the C-U Confidential \u201999<\/strong> special issue continues after that. We\u2019re doing our <\/em>part. How about you? We mentioned Adam Dreyfuss<\/strong>\u2019 senior thesis film project last Biz<\/strong>, and it turns out he\u2019s not the only University of Illinois<\/strong> student with extra filmic irons in the fire. David Jordan<\/strong>, mastermind behind the GEEKS AND ZOMBIES<\/strong> Web series previously mentioned on CUBlog<\/strong><\/a>, wrote a few weeks ago to tell us about a new collaborative real-time editing system called Novacut <\/strong>being developed by a group based in Boulder, CO<\/strong>, expressly with HDSLRs in mind; take a look at this expired Kickstarter <\/strong>page<\/a> for a project description and this official Weblog<\/a> for further developments \u2026 Chicago Filmmakers<\/strong> reports that an October 31<\/strong> submission deadline is approaching for the Peace on Earth Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, a \u201cnot-for-profit festival established to celebrate and encourage the work of independent filmmakers from around the world on the themes of peace, nonviolence, social justice, and eco-balance\u201d returning to the Chicago Cultural Center<\/strong> in February 2012 \u2026 Cameron Counts<\/strong>, director of the Central Illinois Film Commission<\/strong>, noted in his e-newsletter that there will be no September meeting for the group while encouraging everyone to attend the Route 66 International Film Festival this weekend<\/a>; feel free to join the CIFC Yahoo! Group<\/strong><\/a> while their Web site is down \u2026 CUBlog <\/strong>presumes greatly that you, dearest smart readers, have already noticed an explosion of Roger Ebert<\/strong> press this week keyed in to the release of his memoir, Life Itself<\/strong><\/span>, so we\u2019ll only point out these brief Q&As by fellow Chicago Sun-Times<\/span><\/strong> reporter Bill Zwecker<\/strong><\/a> and prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Todd McCarthy<\/strong> of The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/strong><\/a> for context.<\/p>\n

In honor of our unofficial \u201csister\u201d publication, Bachelor Pad Magazine<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, issuing saucy no.17<\/strong> upon the world beginning this week, we\u2019ve saved up some apropos items at which you should peek to your heart\u2019s content! BPM<\/span><\/strong> editor Jason \u201cJava\u201d Croft<\/strong> and yours truly will soon be featured in RAYCRAFT\u2019S FIRST PICK<\/strong>, a \u201cpilot series\u201d produced by Normal <\/strong>filmmaker R.C. Raycraft<\/strong> and taped during the monthly 3rd Sunday Market<\/strong> antique shows in neighboring Bloomington<\/strong>; check out this segment as a dealer proudly displays Shaft<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, the 1940s University of Illinois \u201cstudent life\u201d magazine featuring contributions from undergraduate Hugh Hefner<\/strong> such as a \u201cCo-Ed of the Month\u201d department. Speaking of those early years, we obtained issue 9<\/strong> of the high-gloss fantasy and science-fiction movie title SPFX Magazine<\/span><\/strong><\/a> published by indie producer and Hawaiian shirt fan Ted Bohus<\/strong> (THE DEADLY SPAWN, VAMPIRE VIXENS FROM VENUS<\/strong>), in which Hef discuss his love for classic Hollywood <\/strong>and contributions to film preservation while graphics offer a rare look at his childhood print creations: comics and monster magazines! Back in the present, Playboy<\/span><\/strong> swaggers forth with its trademark \u201centertainment for men\u201d and welcomed into the fold recent UIUC graduate and Illinois<\/strong> native Cody Ren\u00e9e Cameron<\/strong>, who appeared in this summer\u2019s College Girls<\/span><\/strong> and Lingerie<\/span><\/strong> special issues<\/a> as well as the on-line COED Magazine<\/span><\/strong><\/a> before relocating to Los Angeles<\/strong>. CUBlog <\/strong>isn\u2019t sure if Cameron has acting in mind along with her modeling, but Ashley Salazar<\/strong> of this weekend\u2019s IMC Film Festival selection FARM <\/strong>leaves no doubt as to her breadth of ambition; the St. Louis<\/strong> based talent manager\/military veteran\/ring girl\/amateur MMA fighter\/photographer\/model<\/a> has been campaigning mightily to get into Playboy<\/span> herself. [NAUGHTY BOX ::<\/strong> Conservative readers can skip to the end bracket while we save budding fans of petite blonde Cameron<\/a> (or Cody Ren\u00e9e, depending on where one looks<\/a>) and robust brunette Salazar<\/a> valuable Google <\/strong>search time.<\/span> :: NAUGHTY BOX]<\/strong> A random click at COED<\/span> turned up a last-minute tidbit we were completely <\/em>unaware of, as 21-year-old Champaign native Brittany Clapper<\/strong><\/a> will play a Bunny on the new NBC-TV <\/strong>show THE PLAYBOY CLUB<\/strong><\/a> dramatizing the eponymous high society joint Hef operated in Chicago<\/strong>. Moving on from a lovely ginger to an ugly situation, this July article from the Chicago Tribune<\/span><\/strong>\u2019s suburban circuit reports<\/a> on a lawsuit threatened by the owners of high-concept \u201cHollywood Boulevard\u201d theaters in Naperville <\/strong>and Woodridge <\/strong>against adult cinema chanteuse <\/em>Jenna Jameson<\/strong>, claiming she weaseled out of prearranged appearances and book signings back in March. (A quick search turned up no further developments in the case.) And while one might wonder why we\u2019d link to The Guardian<\/span><\/strong>\u2019s recent chat<\/a> with well-known Slovenian author, philosopher, and cultural critic Slavoj \u017di\u017eek<\/strong>, other than as an easy-to-digest sampling of his mind at work, we learned last year after discovering his three-part docu-monologue THE PERVERT\u2019S GUIDE TO CINEMA<\/strong><\/a> he is prone to using high-class cinema as illustration for his topics. (We believe \u017di\u017eek\u2019s tongue is most likely<\/em> planted in cheek as his use of the term \u201cpervert\u201d may allude to one who digs below the formal dressings of cinema with an unwavering eye to dissect its underlying themes and history. Sorry, no Ebert-penned Russ Meyer<\/strong> flicks to be found here.) Fascinating as a whole and loaded with clips from movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, Krzysztof Kieslowsk<\/strong>i, etc., this UK television production piques our interest greatly during an extremely curious scene in which \u017di\u017eek waters tulips<\/a> while muttering about their \u201cdisgusting\u201d sexual nature and vagina dentata<\/em>. If research has served us well, we believe PERVERT\u2019S<\/strong> filmmaker Sophie Fiennes<\/strong> and \u017di\u017eek originally shot that particular segment as test footage somewhere in Champaign-Urbana when the latter came to UIUC for a lecture! So, yeah, we know we\u2019ll have <\/em>to get to the bottom of that one.<\/p>\n
