Please support the artists and their work, attend screenings and events, and otherwise become active in our esoteric little world!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>MFHQ &amp; YOU:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Stayin\u2019 Alive, Part 3: Rise &#8216;n Shine Time for CMM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Last month, leadership changed hands in the three-year-old <strong>Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong> as founder <strong>Johnny Robinson<\/strong> bestowed the moderator\u2019s handle upon <strong>Thomas Nicol<\/strong>, a recent <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> graduate in engineering as well as creator of the shorts <strong>BEDTIME FOR TIMMY<\/strong> and <strong>THE WINDOW INTO TIME<\/strong>. It is not lost on Nicol, Robinson, or other club stalwarts who attended the September meeting in Robinson\u2019s Urbana home that the time could not be better for CMM to reestablish its priorities with the advent of the <strong>CU Film Society<\/strong>, <a title=\"CU Film Society\u2019s Web site is up! :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=3919\" target=\"_blank\">as we reported here<\/a>. A through-line in that evening\u2019s conversation involved defining a symbiotic relationship between CMM, focused on local camaraderie and collaboration, and CUFS, aiming for professional-level film appreciation and production education, while retooling CMM functions to better attract members and volunteers beyond the core \u201cusual suspects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">CMM has met monthly without interruption and hosted presentations, workshops, and discussions, but it has never quite gained critical mass in active participants or community presence. Robinson stated in an e-mail message to CMM members that work and time commitments have simply left him little room to take the lead in reestablishing momentum, which is understandable. <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> therefore endorses the choice of Nicol as successor given his openness, creativity, and tech-savvy nature. One can easily see the distinct value both groups can offer <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>, so we hope CMM\u2019s second wind will help it achieve its potential in our fair twin cities rife with talent and ambition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even if the October CMM gathering is mainly for those \u201cusual suspects\u201d \u2013 which should <em>not<\/em> discourage the curious from attending, of course \u2013 why not get in the loop by November\u2019s meeting? The game is afoot, dearest readers, although the question remains \u2013 do <em>you<\/em> have genuine interest in helping author a new path for CMM and, by proxy, the cinematic life of Champaign-Urbana?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>ITEMS OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s <em>all<\/em> about the merchandise, folks, as October haunts us early with numerous Ghosts of <strong>CUBlog<\/strong>\u2019s Past \u2026 We caught a Facebook announcement that southern <strong>Illinois<\/strong> micro-budget project <strong>FARM<\/strong>, <a title=\"C-U Biz-en-sc\u00e8ne: 10.28.2010 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=2275\" target=\"_blank\">covered right here a year ago<\/a>, will be released nationally on DVD next<strong> Tuesday, October 11<\/strong>, by <strong>Florida<\/strong> distributor <strong>Green Apple Entertainment<\/strong>. <a title=\"FARM :: Green Apple Entertainment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenapple-ent.com\/?p=973\" target=\"_blank\">Their product page for <strong>FARM<\/strong><\/a> reveals atmospheric cover art and little else, leading us to believe the disc will be bare-bones; still, one can pre-order it now through such resale heavyweights as <strong>Wal-mart, Best Buy, CD Universe, Amazon, Family Video<\/strong>, and <strong>Barnes &amp; Noble<\/strong> \u2026 While compiling today\u2019s <strong>CUBiz<\/strong>, we stumbled upon a listing at <strong>DVD Empire<\/strong> for <a title=\"GRANDVIEW, U.S.A. :: DVD Empire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dvdempire.com\/Exec\/v4_item.asp?item_id=1581177\" target=\"_blank\">the long-delayed digital release of the 1984 small town fantasia <strong>GRANDVIEW, U.S.A.<\/strong><\/a>, which <strong>Paramount Home Entertainment <\/strong>issued this past <strong>Tuesday, October 4<\/strong>. Directed by <strong>Randal Kleiser<\/strong> (<strong>GREASE<\/strong>) and starring <strong>Jamie Lee Curtis, C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh<\/strong>, and the late <strong>Patrick Swayze<\/strong>, <strong>GRANDVIEW<\/strong> was filmed during the fall of 1983 in little <strong>Pontiac, Illinois<\/strong>, located close to <strong>Bloomington-Normal<\/strong>. There doesn\u2019t seem to be a Blu-ray edition available \u2026 DVD Empire also <a title=\"LIVING WILL :: DVD Empire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dvdempire.com\/Exec\/v4_item.asp?item_id=1580031\" target=\"_blank\">offers the new <strong>Lionsgate<\/strong> release <strong>LIVING WILL<\/strong><\/a>, a comedy about a <em>brah<\/em> who dies and comes back as an obnoxious ghost. We noticed it because top-billed <strong>April Scott<\/strong> lived in the C-U for two years before hightailing it to <strong>Hollywood<\/strong>, seeking her fortunes as a model, actress, and producer. <a title=\"April Scott :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aprilscott.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">As she works hard to make her name<\/a>, most everybody else will eyeball <strong>LIVING WILL<\/strong> since its cast includes the late <strong>JACKASS<\/strong> co-star <strong>Ryan Dunn<\/strong> as the best friend-<em>cum<\/em>-spirit \u2026 Lionsgate has also issued a flood of horror film four-pack DVDs such as <a title=\"&quot;4-Film Collection&quot; feat. CARNIVORE :: DVD Empire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dvdempire.com\/Exec\/v4_item.asp?item_id=1580120\" target=\"_blank\">this particular combination with <strong>CARNIVORE<\/strong><\/a>, a late Eighties science-gone-wrong flick left unfinished until the late Nineties and originally released to home video 10 years ago. We covered <strong>CARNIVORE<\/strong> way back in <strong>MICRO-FILM 3<\/strong>, partly because it was the first Illinois indie production on which your humble editor knew a crew member \u2013 in this case, co-director and co-writer <strong>Frank Kurtz<\/strong>, who worked at the flagship <strong>Graham Crackers Comics<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Naperville<\/strong> while moonlighting on the movie \u2026 In the present, our <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> side is just beginning to show signs of life but we\u2019ve already received our first unsolicited kick-ass product for review! A little black bubble mailer left outside <strong>MFHQ<\/strong> contained <a title=\"&quot;Tales From Beyond the Pale&quot; :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/talesfrombeyondthepale.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tales From Beyond the Pale<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a set of five audio CDs containing 10 original horror stories produced by <strong>Larry Fessenden<\/strong> (<strong>THE LAST WINTER<\/strong>) and <strong>Glenn McQuaid<\/strong> (<strong>I SELL THE DEAD<\/strong>) of acclaimed <strong>New York<\/strong> indie studio <strong>Glass Eye Pix<\/strong>. Amongst those contributing to the aural mayhem are <strong>Christopher Denham<\/strong>, a UIUC theater department alum and writer-director of the well received feature <strong>HOME MOVIE<\/strong>, and <strong>Joe Swanberg<\/strong>, a graduate of <strong>Southern Illinois University-Carbondale<\/strong> and prolific contributor to the \u201cmumblecore\u201d lo-fi movement with such projects as <strong>HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS<\/strong> and <strong>UNCLE KENT<\/strong>. Set for release next <strong>Tuesday, October 11<\/strong>, via <strong>iTunes<\/strong> and <a title=\"&quot;Tales From Beyond the Pale&quot; Season One :: Amazon.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tales-Beyond-Complete-Season-Volumes\/dp\/B005OL8G8S\/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=music&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1317954800&amp;sr=1-1-catcorr\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Amazon<\/strong>, these <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Tales<\/span> will be available as digital downloads as well as the box set and individual discs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>LINKS OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Produced by Champaign native and entrepreneurial indie hop-hop artist <strong>Edward Gene Hicks<\/strong>, a.k.a. <strong>G-Da-Man<\/strong>, <strong>THE DYING BREED<\/strong> is a low-budget <strong>Chicago<\/strong>\/C-U drama about an ex-Marine played by Hicks who takes on the seedy side of his impoverished neighborhood for the sake of the youth.
