Since the 2012 calendar has now leaped over to February, we\u2019ve begun the annual ritual wherein our noggins spin \u2018round for three months straight as we juggle concurrent responsibilities in the name of cinematic enrichment du C-U, leading right up to the New Art Film Festival<\/strong> and Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> in April! Inseparable from the bruising work load, of course, is the next audacious issue of C-U Confidential<\/strong> digest as well as our sideline production chores on the spring and summer issues of Champaign<\/strong>\u2019s own Bachelor Pad Magazine<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, traditionally bracketing the expanded spring madness. We\u2019re preoccupied by BPM<\/span> number 19 at the moment \u2013 and with huggable cover lass Ludella Hahn<\/strong><\/a> at the fore, can you blame us?<\/a> – requiring CUBlog<\/strong> wordage to be curtailed until we\u2019re in the clear as judged by retro-philanthropist editor, Java<\/strong>. University of Illinois<\/strong> student Charles Terry<\/strong> contacted CUBlog<\/strong> to let us know about a science-fiction short film project in the works called CROSSING OVER<\/strong>. It involves a physics student who seemingly creates a bridge to a parallel world. Terry needs to cast seven or eight actors as well as assemble a skeleton crew. He will host an information session at 6 p.m.<\/strong> this Saturday, February 11<\/strong>, in the Illini Union<\/strong> courtyard; you can confirm your interest in attending or receiving information by contacting Terry at cterry [at] Illinois [dot] edu<\/strong> or (217) 766-7111<\/strong> \u2026 CUBlog<\/strong> friend Alaric Rocha<\/strong> is in pre-production on a new film short, DEADLY EMBRACE<\/strong>, that is scheduled for filming mid-July in Chicagoland. Cast and crew needs are listed on his Blue Bassoon<\/strong> Web site<\/a> while a fundraiser\/milonga will take place Saturday at Dance Connection, 3117 N. Clybourne Ave., Chicago<\/strong>, with live music by Tango Espejo<\/strong> \u2026 Infesting UIUC\u2019s Foellinger Auditorium<\/strong> on Saturday, February 25<\/strong>, will be the 29th annual Insect Fear Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> sponsored by the Entomology Graduate Student Association<\/strong>. Kid-friendly petting zoos, informational displays, face painting, and an art contest will swarm the atrium beginning at 6 p.m.<\/strong> while entomology chair May Berenbaum<\/strong> will present opening remarks at 7 p.m.<\/strong> inside the theater, to be followed by short subjects and two R-rated low-budget shockers, GLASS TRAP<\/strong> (2005) depicting radioactive ants in a skyscraper and THE BONE SNATCHER<\/strong> (2003) involving a mythological creature in the Namib Desert<\/strong> of Africa<\/strong>. Admission to all is free \u2026 Down south at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale<\/strong>, the 34th annual Big Muddy Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> will launch on Tuesday, February 21<\/strong>, with a screening of Spike Lee<\/strong>\u2019s DO THE RIGHT THING<\/strong> (1989) and then formally begin the following evening with the Peru<\/strong>-set drama POSTALES<\/strong>, directed by SIU-C alumnus Josh Hyde<\/strong>, and ON DOWN THE LINE<\/strong>, a character piece set in farm country outside of Austin, Texas<\/strong> \u2026 Still south but a lot closer to the C-U is Goodrich<\/strong>\u2019s Savoy 16<\/strong> multiplex, which may be in line for extensive renovations including the addition of an auditorium and \u201ccommunity room\u201d as reported by the News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> on January 25<\/strong><\/a>. If construction begins sooner rather than later, the lucky UI students who score big in Goodrich and Illini Media<\/strong>\u2019s 20th annual Academy Awards Contest<\/strong><\/a> might have fresh digs in which to enjoy fresh flicks \u2026 The Milwaukee Underground Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> is accepting submissions through Friday, March 30<\/strong>, for its May 4-6<\/strong> event on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee<\/strong> campus \u2026<\/p>\n

Odds, ends, and a passing characterize the lot for this here Biz<\/strong>. First, we note the death of erotic drama specialist Zalman King<\/strong><\/a> (WILD ORCHID, THE RED SHOE DIARIES<\/strong>) on February 3<\/strong> at age 70; former Jane Addams Book Store<\/strong> owner Flora Faraci<\/strong> revealed to your pre-MICRO-FILM<\/strong> editor that King was a distant relative, so we offer our condolences all through the family tree. A reboot of SHORT CIRCUIT<\/strong>, the 1986 robot comedy with Steve Guttenberg<\/strong> and Ally Sheedy<\/strong>, has been languishing for years in Hollywood<\/strong>\u2019s remake heap, although The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/span> noted on Thursday<\/a> the signing of screenwriter Matt Lieberman<\/strong>; we instead zeroed in on two other names dropped by the article: Ryan E. Heppe<\/strong>, a co-producer who hails from nearby Homer<\/strong> and attended UIUC, and Tim Hill<\/strong>, the attached director who has logged credits on family fare like HOP, MUPPETS FROM SPACE<\/strong>, and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS<\/strong> in the past. Another downstate college alumnus, actor\/comedian Sean Hayes<\/strong> of WILL & GRACE<\/strong> and the upcoming THREE STOOGES<\/strong> movie, briefly visited his alma mater Illinois State University<\/strong> according to Bill Flick<\/strong> of The Pantagraph<\/span><\/strong><\/a>; Hayes also participated in a question-and-answer session at ISU\u2019s Center for the Visual Arts<\/strong>, attended by more than 200 undergraduates, and handed out promotional swag for the NBC<\/strong> series GRIMM<\/strong>, for which he is an executive producer.
