What a boo<\/em>-tiful day to enjoy Halloween<\/strong>, dearest bleeders! For the adventurous \u2013 e.g., those not completely<\/em> knocked out by pre-All Hallows’ Eve partying last weekend \u2013 tonight may be round two, or three, or some other ghastly number, but any which way please<\/em> be safe. We\u2019d like to toss a few alternate suggestions into your goodie bag of horrifically filmy things you might do this October 31<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

First and foremost, go see a scary movie! After an early show of SAMSARA<\/strong>, the Art Theater<\/strong><\/a> will present the acclaimed Magnet Films<\/strong> release V\/H\/S<\/strong><\/a> at 7:30<\/strong> and 10 p.m.<\/strong>; it\u2019s a low-budget, highly creepy anthology taking the \u201cfound footage\u201d concept in a new direction. The multiplexes still have most of the recent Hollywood<\/strong> scare fare on tap, although one-off digital presentations of John Carpenter<\/strong>\u2019s HALLOWEEN<\/strong> and the classic Universal<\/strong> duo FRANKENSTEIN<\/strong> and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN<\/strong> have already passed. Both the Goodrich Savoy 16<\/strong><\/a> and Carmike Beverly Cinema 18<\/strong><\/a> will play SILENT HILL: REVELATION, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4, SINISTER<\/strong>, and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA<\/strong>, while Savoy has held over Tim Burton<\/strong>\u2019s FRANKENWEENIE<\/strong> in a 4:40 p.m.<\/strong> matinee (hurry!) and Beverly will bite tonight at 9 p.m.<\/strong> with George A. Romero<\/strong>\u2019s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD<\/strong> in a 3-D and (ugh<\/em>) colorized edition.<\/p>\n

If one must stay home, then one can plan ahead and stock up on a few of the thousands of horror movie videos enshrined on the shelves of That\u2019s Rentertainment<\/strong><\/a> in Campustown<\/strong>. Also, Urbana Public Television<\/strong> will offer an evening<\/a> full of vintage eek<\/em> starting at 6 p.m.<\/strong>: THE DEVIL\u2019S MESSENGER<\/strong> starring Lon Chaney, Jr.<\/strong>, TORMENTED<\/strong> directed by Bert I. Gordon<\/strong>, and THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA<\/strong> and TERROR IN THE CRYPT<\/strong> both with Christopher Lee<\/strong>. Of note is that TORMENTED<\/strong> anchors a \u201cHalloween Special\u201d hosted by Baltimore<\/strong> horror host Dr. Dreck<\/strong> (a.k.a. indie filmmaker Mike Legge<\/strong>) in a tradition long abandoned by the networks, cable outlets, and most local television stations. (One of the rare big-city exceptions is Chicago<\/strong>\u2019s Svengoolie<\/strong> portrayed by Rich Koz<\/strong><\/a>, now a nationwide institution on ME-TV<\/strong>.) Numerous bumpers and skits pertaining to Windy City fear programming have been archived on the invaluable Museum of Classic Chicago Television<\/strong> Web site<\/a>, including the video above which opened the early Seventies iteration \u201cFreaky Films<\/strong>\u201d on WLS Channel 7<\/strong>, the ABC-TV<\/strong> affiliate.<\/p>\n

For whatever insidious reason, Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> itself does not<\/em> host a full-blown Halloween\/indie film festival<\/a> in the fall, bringing us to the topic of past and future glories. Fifteen years ago tonight, many of the C-U\u2019s brightest were enjoying the very first Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> held in the University of Illinois<\/strong>\u2019 Noyes Lab<\/strong> and the Channing-Murray Foundation<\/strong>\/Red Herring Coffee House<\/strong>, as evidenced by this ancient post<\/a> courtesy of then-local resident Gerry Kissell<\/strong>. (Yes, that is<\/em> Bruce Campbell<\/strong>, along with director\/former Sam Raimi<\/strong> posse member Josh Becker<\/strong>.) Can our community marshal forces to reignite that<\/em> spooky fire? Maybe it will take, for instance, the youthful verve and particular sensibilities of a group like the one producing the upstart horror entertainment Web site, Horror-Fix<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, launched in Rantoul<\/strong> by editor Ash Hamilton<\/strong>. We present a tease below picturing their SINISTER<\/strong> review written by Urbana resident Colin Price<\/strong>, who appeared on the cover of the most recent C-U Confidential<\/strong> digest. Hmmmmmmmm<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n
