For the adventurous \u2013 e.g., those not <em>completely<\/em> knocked out by pre-All Hallows&#8217; Eve partying last weekend \u2013 tonight may be round two, or three, or some other ghastly number, but any which way <em>please<\/em> be safe. We\u2019d like to toss a few alternate suggestions into your goodie bag of horrifically filmy things you might do this <strong>October 31<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First and foremost, go see a scary movie! After an early show of <strong>SAMSARA<\/strong>, the <a title=\"The Art Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecuart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Art Theater<\/strong><\/a> will present <a title=\"V\/H\/S :: Magnet Films\" href=\"http:\/\/www.magnetreleasing.com\/vhs\/\" target=\"_blank\">the acclaimed <strong>Magnet Films<\/strong> release <strong>V\/H\/S<\/strong><\/a> at <strong>7:30<\/strong> and <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong>; it\u2019s a low-budget, highly creepy anthology taking the \u201cfound footage\u201d concept in a new direction. The multiplexes still have most of the recent <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> scare fare on tap, although one-off digital presentations of <strong>John Carpenter<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>HALLOWEEN<\/strong> and the classic <strong>Universal<\/strong> duo <strong>FRANKENSTEIN<\/strong> and <strong>BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN<\/strong> have already passed. Both the <a title=\"Savoy 16 :: Goodrich Quality Theaters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gqti.com\/theaters.aspx?theaterid=1476\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Goodrich Savoy 16<\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"Beverly Cinema 18 show times :: Carmike Cinemas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carmike.com\/ShowTimes\/Theater\/242\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Carmike Beverly Cinema 18<\/strong><\/a> will play <strong>SILENT HILL: REVELATION, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4, SINISTER<\/strong>, and <strong>HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA<\/strong>, while Savoy has held over <strong>Tim Burton<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>FRANKENWEENIE<\/strong> in a <strong>4:40 p.m.<\/strong> matinee (hurry!) and Beverly will bite tonight at <strong>9 p.m.<\/strong> with <strong>George A. Also, <a title=\"Daily Schedule :: Urbana Public Television\" href=\"http:\/\/urbanapublictelevision.org\/schedule\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Urbana Public Television<\/strong> will offer an evening<\/a> full of vintage <em>eek<\/em> starting at <strong>6 p.m.<\/strong>: <strong>THE DEVIL\u2019S MESSENGER<\/strong> starring <strong>Lon Chaney, Jr.<\/strong>, <strong>TORMENTED<\/strong> directed by <strong>Bert I. Gordon<\/strong>, and <strong>THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA<\/strong> and <strong>TERROR IN THE CRYPT<\/strong> both with <strong>Christopher Lee<\/strong>. Of note is that <strong>TORMENTED<\/strong> anchors a \u201cHalloween Special\u201d hosted by <strong>Baltimore<\/strong> horror host <strong>Dr. Dreck<\/strong> (a.k.a. indie filmmaker <strong>Mike Legge<\/strong>) in a tradition long abandoned by the networks, cable outlets, and most local television stations. (One of the rare big-city exceptions is <a title=\"\u201cScary\u201d reprint is Sven-tastic! :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=175\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chicago<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Svengoolie<\/strong> portrayed by <strong>Rich Koz<\/strong><\/a>, now a nationwide institution on <strong>ME-TV<\/strong>.) Numerous bumpers and skits pertaining to Windy City fear programming have been archived on <a title=\"The Museum of Classic Chicago Television :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fuzzymemories.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">the invaluable <strong>Museum of Classic Chicago Television<\/strong> Web site<\/a>, including the video above which opened the early Seventies iteration \u201c<strong>Freaky Films<\/strong>\u201d on <strong>WLS Channel 7<\/strong>, the <strong>ABC-TV<\/strong> affiliate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For whatever insidious reason, <a title=\"Five film events to drop this fall :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=5423\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> itself does <em>not<\/em> host a full-blown Halloween\/indie film festival<\/a> in the fall, bringing us to the topic of past and future glories. Fifteen years ago tonight, many of the C-U\u2019s brightest were enjoying the very first<strong> Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> held in the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong>\u2019 <strong>Noyes Lab<\/strong> and the <strong>Channing-Murray Foundation<\/strong>\/<strong>Red Herring Coffee House<\/strong>, <a title=\"Freaky Film Festival 1997 flashback :: Beckerfilms.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beckerfilms.com\/webguy3.html\" target=\"_blank\">as evidenced by this ancient post<\/a> courtesy of then-local resident <strong>Gerry Kissell<\/strong>. (Yes, that <em>is<\/em> <strong>Bruce Campbell<\/strong>, along with director\/former <strong>Sam Raimi<\/strong> posse member <strong>Josh Becker<\/strong>.) Can our community marshal forces to reignite <em>that<\/em> spooky fire? Maybe it will take, for instance, the youthful verve and particular sensibilities of a group like the one producing the upstart horror entertainment Web site, <a title=\"Horror-Fix :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.horror-fix.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Horror-Fix<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, launched in <strong>Rantoul<\/strong> by editor <strong>Ash Hamilton<\/strong>.
