Today and next Wednesday, November 21<\/strong>, we\u2019re going to try out a reinvention of our prior \u201cC-U Biz-en-sc\u00e8ne<\/strong>\u201d column<\/a>, stripped to the core so you can quickly skim the goods! We\u2019re simply going to pair together brand-new and slightly used news items that haven\u2019t appeared here yet to demonstrate the concept. (Fans of the cinema will surely note our extrapolation of the iconic film leader found at the beginning of movie film prints to help projectionists make sure the soundtrack is synched and image in focus.) 5 :: SHATTERGLASS STUDIOS EARNS AWARD,
\nHOSTS OPEN HOUSE TODAY
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the end of last month, the Champaign News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> profiled media producers<\/a> Brett Hays<\/strong> and Luke Boyce<\/strong>, whose firm Shatterglass Studios<\/strong><\/a> received Small Business of the Year 2012 honors from the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce<\/strong>. You can help congratulate Shatterglass on their achievement by attending an Open House later today, Thursday, November 15, 3-7 p.m.<\/strong>, at their new headquarters located at 309 S. Neil St., Champaign<\/strong>, which will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, drinks, and h\u2019orderves<\/em>. Shatterglass applies a cinematic aesthetic to commercials, industrials, and documentaries while Boyce and Hays have been instrumental in launching the Champaign-Urbana Film Society<\/strong> and other film culture initiatives.<\/p>\n

4 :: SINE FINE FILMS TO SUP ON
\n\u201cSPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY\u201d THIS WEEKEND

Locals well aware of this prairie land\u2019s mysterious magnetic powers, hell bent on drawing citizenry back to Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> whenever possible, should not be surprised to learn a former C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> regular<\/a> has alighted for a short spell. En route to San Francisco<\/strong> is Eleanore Stasheff<\/strong>, she of the wild cable-access fantasy shows such as THE GIFT BEARER<\/strong> and PANDORA\u2019S BOX<\/strong>, and it seems she can\u2019t escape the clutches du C-U without embarking on a Sine Fine Films<\/strong><\/a> jaunt! This time, she will film selections from Edgar Lee Masters<\/strong>\u2019 Spoon River Anthology<\/span><\/strong>, the famed \u201cepitaphs of the dead written as poetry\u201d volume you might have read in school. 3 :: FILM CRITIC KOPLINSKI REVIVES
\n“CINEMA-SCOPING\u201d COLUMN AT NEWS-GAZETTE
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Long-time area journalist Chuck Koplinski<\/strong>, whose movie writings currently appear in the Illinois Times<\/span><\/strong> in Springfield<\/strong> and the News-Gazette<\/span> here in Champaign, has launched anew his column \u201cCinema-Scoping<\/strong>\u201d on-line with the latter<\/a>. You might have seen the moniker appear above his byline in the past, most recently during a short stint with on-line magazine Smile Politely<\/strong><\/span>. Koplinski can be quite prolific so we should expect a steady stream of material to appear here; since posting an introduction on October 22<\/strong>, he has written about new home video releases, teaser trailers for IRON MAN 3<\/strong> and CARRIE<\/strong>, the one-night-only Savoy 16<\/strong> play date for classic chillers FRANKENSTEIN<\/strong> and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN<\/strong>, and the recently concluded Embarrass Valley Film Festival<\/strong> in Charleston<\/strong> which highlighted the career of actor Gene Hackman<\/strong>. We\u2019ll presume \u201cC-S\u201d complements his longer print pieces.<\/p>\n

2 :: ROGER EBERT MEMOIR \u201cLIFE ITSELF\u201d
\nOPTIONED FOR ADAPTATION BY JAMES & ZAILLIAN
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, this particular announcement is old news, but it leads one to wonder how acclaimed Chicago<\/strong> filmmaker Steve James<\/strong> (HOOP DREAMS, THE INTERRUPTERS, STEVIE<\/strong>) and Hollywood<\/strong> class acts Martin Scorsese<\/strong> (HUGO, GOODFELLAS, TAXI DRIVER<\/strong>) and Steven Zaillian<\/strong> (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, MONEYBALL, SCHINDLER\u2019S LIST<\/strong>) plan to explore the life of film critic Roger Ebert<\/strong> in a feature documentary. One would pray a non-academic and non-static approach will be arrived upon before James ventures forth to amass footage for the project, which will officially adapt Ebert\u2019s 2011 memoir, Life Itself<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, for (presumably) the big screen. Just be on your best behavior when encountering camera crews on the C-U streets, dearest neighbors, for you never know where their footage might<\/em> end up!
