5 :: UPCOMING C-U FILM \u201cSCARY NORMAL\u201d
\nTO PREMIERE NEXT FEBRUARY IN MICHIGAN<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2013, two independent features produced in Champaign<\/strong> and Vermillion<\/strong> counties will begin making the rounds. One of them is SCARY NORMAL<\/strong><\/a>, the directorial debut of Jennifer Bechtel<\/strong> (LEADING LADIES<\/strong>) starring Laura Anne Welle, April Cleveland, Mike Trippiedi<\/strong>, and Chris Taber<\/strong>, scheduled to take its first bow February 9<\/strong><\/a> during the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference<\/strong>, hosted this year by Michigan State University<\/strong> in Lansing, MI<\/strong>. Outwardly the more lighthearted of the two, SCARY NORMAL<\/strong> concerns a teen protagonist who discovers feelings for another young woman as her chaotic family life plays out in the background. We\u2019re sure Bechtel will let us know when the film first plays the C-U so we can invite you all to see it; LGBT friendly groups might consider her just-announced program through which they can raise funding for their own work<\/a> by screening SCARY NORMAL<\/strong> at no cost!<\/p>\n

4 :: MIKE BOEDICKER READIES THIRD FEATURE,
\nPROFILED IN NEWS-GAZETTE Q&A<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several weeks ago, your humble editor attended a rough cut screening of HAUNTINGS<\/strong> directed by Mike Boedicker<\/strong> of Roselawn Productions<\/strong><\/a> in Danville<\/strong>. The dramatic feature tells the story of a couple played by Joi Hoffsommer<\/strong> and Bill Kephart<\/strong> who move into a mansion saddled with a murky history involving mysticism and murder. Once the post-production team finishes refining the edit and Boedicker chooses a release title, we\u2019ll hopefully join each and every one of you when this well-acted follow-up to Roselawn\u2019s REVOLTING<\/strong> (2010) and SHOW<\/strong> (2006) plays the C-U as well! Until then, enjoy this recent News-Gazette<\/strong><\/span> \u201cGetting Personal\u201d feature<\/a> for which Boedicker candidly answered questions about himself, as well as his own Web tribute to Danville-raised movie legend Gene Hackman<\/strong><\/a> (HOOSIERS<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

3 :: ESSAY BY RICHARD LESKOSKY GIVES PROPS
\nTO \u201cFILM-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why yes, Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>, he would be talking about Champaign-Urbana! The current entry in a biweekly News-Gazette<\/span> series by retired University of Illinois<\/strong> professor Richard J. Leskosky<\/strong> singles out several movie lovers\u2019 resources he is thankful for, most of them located in the C-U including the Art Theater Co-op, That\u2019s Rentertainment, Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong>, the Insect Fear Film Festival<\/strong>, and \u2026 C-U Confidential<\/strong>! (He did<\/em> generously write for our last issue, but let\u2019s not digress.) We sincerely thank Leskosky for the nod as well as for complementing C-U film culture; you can read the piece right here<\/a> and pull up his previous articles<\/a> with a name search. We\u2019re lucky to have such a high caliber of original film writing in a small city newspaper between him, Chuck Koplinski<\/strong><\/a>, and syndicated Roger Ebert<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2 :: MICRO-PRODUCER THOMAS NICOL LAUNCHES
\nWEB SITE; 40 NORTH REVISES THEIR OWN<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most intriguing daredevil to emerge in our scene might be Thomas Nicol<\/strong>, the Hobbyist Without Fear. Not content to simply oversee Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong>, advise the C-U Film Society<\/strong>, and make his own damn movies, Nicol recently launched the info-blog<\/a> QuantumCat Animation<\/strong> which details his adventures in filmmaking \u2013 particularly from a craft standpoint \u2013 as well as comment on movie subjects at large. Elsewhere, those wanting to expand their own reach might visit the brand-new Web site for the 40 North 88 West<\/strong> arts council<\/a> of Champaign County, which invites area artists to add information to their on-line directory<\/a> for free. This includes you<\/em>, media-making types! As of this writing, we don\u2019t see any usual CUBlog<\/strong> suspects in the listing so it\u2019s time for everyone to step on it and make our presence known!<\/p>\n
