The majority of our dearest readers have probably decided whether or not to attend tonight\u2019s 30th annual Insect Fear Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>. If you happen to be one of those folks perennially on the fence over this giddy collision of real science and subpar cinema, wrought by the University of Illinois<\/strong>\u2019 Entomology Graduate Student Association<\/strong> (EGSA) under the watchful eyes of Department of Entomology<\/strong><\/a> head May Berenbaum<\/strong> and News-Gazette<\/strong><\/span> film journalist Richard Leskosky<\/strong>, then maybe this year is your<\/em> year to set aside all personal conspiracies and go!<\/p>\n

The 2013 theme is \u201cThe InsX-Files: The Truth (About Insects) is Out There\u201d as EGSA welcomes THE X-FILES<\/strong> creator\/producer Chris Carter<\/strong> and writer\/story editor Darin Morgan<\/strong> to Foellinger Auditorium<\/strong> on the UIUC Main Quad<\/strong>. They will take questions after screenings of the third season X-FILES<\/strong> episode, \u201cWar of the Coprophages<\/strong>,\u201d<\/a> from 1996 \u2013 it is the \u201cmonster of the week\u201d story with an entomologist character named after Berenbaum and a killer cockroach plot based on her research \u2013 and the 1998 theatrical feature, THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE<\/strong><\/a>, directed by Rob Bowman<\/strong> and involving honey bees carrying an alien virus. In other words, no EMPIRE OF THE ANTS<\/strong> or GIANT SPIDER INVASION<\/strong> to weather before the good stuff kicks in!<\/p>\n

The entomology component of IFFF takes place in the Foellinger foyer, where EGSA members will introduce young and old alike to the wonders of the insect world. (Fans of arachnids and other arthropods will also have something to marvel at, scout\u2019s honor!) Both live specimens and mounted collections will be on display. There will also be activity tables for children and a gallery of Art Contest entries. Doors open at 6 p.m.<\/strong>, THE X-FILES<\/strong> presentation begins at 7 p.m.<\/strong>, and admission to the entire evening is free!<\/p>\n
