{"id":5959,"date":"2013-03-28T15:00:06","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T21:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=5959"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:48:52","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:48:52","slug":"c-u-film-not-yet-over-the-hill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=5959","title":{"rendered":"C-U film not yet over the hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sometimes, your humble editor wishes we had more foresight to prepare <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> material for in advance, particularly to avoid grinding out material during the heavy-duty stretches in our calendar year such as, <em>oh<\/em>, the weeks leading up to the <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong> and \u201c<strong>Ebertfest<\/strong>.\u201d It always seems a date of historic significance is threatening to blow right by us when we\u2019re swamped. A portion of these milestones escape our editorial clutches much to our consternation, but occasions like this when we manage to nab one on the fly \u2013 even if <em>barely<\/em> so \u2013 allow us to at least make note of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"Zine of our Scene :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?page_id=144\" target=\"_blank\">In <strong>C-U Confidential<\/strong> <strong>#2<\/strong><\/a> and elsewhere, we\u2019ve referenced a period in the early Seventies when film activity was surprisingly vibrant in <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>, primarily at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong>. Two particular events marking student contributions to that equation happened to take place on the same day 40 years ago today. On <strong>Wednesday, March 28, 1973<\/strong>, future film history author and movie producer <strong>Barry Sabath<\/strong> premiered the first issue of the student-published film journal <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong> at the <strong>Illini Union<\/strong> with his peers. Later that night the student-produced, feature-length <a title=\"Critique du C-U: SHOT reloaded :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=95\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBest Picture of 1973,\u201d <strong>SHOT<\/strong><\/a>, unspooled at <strong>Foellinger Auditorium<\/strong> for the very first time after four months of breakneck filming and editing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"SHOT advertisement :: The Daily Illini, March 22, 1973\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog%20Art\/cu_shot_premiere_ad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While the graduate students behind the movie, director <strong>Mitch Brown<\/strong> and producer\/future Ebertfest festival director <strong>Nate Kohn<\/strong>, would burn through their 15 minutes of <strong>SHOT<\/strong> fame by the fall, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span> lasted another four semesters and five issues under the watch of recent faculty hires <strong>Edwin Jahiel<\/strong> and <strong>Richard Leskosky<\/strong>. As we\u2019ve discovered, it\u2019s quite difficult to find evidence that either endeavor existed yet these key campus moments illustrate the healthy synergy that can occur in our twin cities, cultural or otherwise, if the right mix of students, teachers, professionals, residents, and visitors make it so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Film-related activity has again taken a foothold in the C-U thanks to a core contingent of passionate media producers, academics, and promoters harnessing 21st century tools and distribution methods. Yet, we also need to develop consistent and accessible opportunities for our children, tweens, teenagers, and college students to enhance their media creation skills without feeling the need to move elsewhere for the privilege. Can we do better than simply providing token in-class projects, isolated courses in various departments, or limited editing labs tucked away in the most obscure corners? Is it a sin to stress the narrative and experimental alongside the journalistic, UIUC?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Recent developments provide evidence the adults du C-U finally recognize this educational deficiency. <strong>Champaign-Urbana Film Society<\/strong> members are producing short films from scripts written by area K-12 students for their <a title=\"Pens to Lens Screenwriting Competition :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/penstolens.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">inaugural \u201c<strong>Pens to Lens<\/strong>\u201d program<\/a>. The UI <strong>Undergraduate Library<\/strong> <a title=\"Undergraduate Library opens professional video production studio :: The Daily Illini\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyillini.com\/news\/campus\/article_20acbe16-8d29-11e2-8076-001a4bcf6878.html\" target=\"_blank\">opened a \u201c<strong>Media Commons<\/strong>\u201d earlier this semester<\/a>, featuring work stations and a small production studio that students can utilize. UI <strong>Media and Cinema Studies<\/strong> underclassmen will take public their spring collaboration, the <a title=\"Illini Independent Film Festival :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/iifilmfestival.wix.com\/illiniiff\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Illini Independent Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, on <strong>Saturday, April 27<\/strong>, a week after they intern at Ebertfest. These join existent opportunities for students to flex their filmmaking best, such as by participating in the decade-old <a title=\"Illlini Film &amp; Video :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.illinifilmandvideo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong><\/a> and brand-new <a title=\"UIUC Chinese Independent Film Society @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UIUCCIFS\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chinese Independent Film Society<\/strong><\/a> and submitting to the UI <a title=\"UI Women's Resources Center @ Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/University-of-Illinois-Womens-Resources-Center\/164120746133\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Women\u2019s Resources Center<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Feminist Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There will always be self-starting young people like the Sabaths, Browns, and Kohns who throw caution to the wind and allow their media-making desires to manifest through ambition, imagination, and hard work. However, the majority require learned encouragement to guide them at the outset. By helping develop their skills, we sharpen our own as well as expand on our collective body of work, possibly impressing good things upon the world through the moving image Champaign-Urbana style.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Don\u2019t wait to get started, dearest C-U.
