One year ago, Smile Politely<\/strong><\/span> honored the New Art Film Festival<\/strong><\/a> as the \u201cBest Local Film Festival Other than Ebertfest\u201d as part of their annual \u201cBest of Champaign-Urbana\u201d compilation essays. Contributor and film fan Jeremiah Stanley<\/strong> has surprised us again in this year\u2019s \u201cBest\u201d series, not by giving NAFF repeat props but for bestowing kudos upon individual achievements. This is intriguing to us at C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> since our reporting acumen typically avoids the critical assessment of films in our own film culture \u2013 we do our best to love \u2018em all, big or small \u2013 and it is uncommon for a writer in other Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> media to express value judgment in our milieu, even with a deliberately positive bent. Therefore, dearest readers, this<\/em> is what it looks like when someone appreciates the art of local filmmaking.<\/p>\n

In the \u201cBest Arts\u201d 2013 posting<\/a>, Stanley singles out the \u201cEbertfest<\/strong>\u201d and community contributions of Shatterglass Studios<\/strong> while Matthew Green<\/strong> gives props to the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> for their (currently on-hold) live theater and opera programming. And then, Stanley awards \u201cBest Short Film\u201d to the dark comedy ALWAYS<\/strong>, co-directed by University of Illinois<\/strong> research scientist Robin Berthier<\/strong>, \u201cBest Performance in a Film\u201d to Karen Vaccaro<\/strong>, the actress\/narrator in the documentary hybrid THE ACTUAL, AUTHENTIC VERSION OF WHO YOU SAY I AM<\/strong> directed by Mark Ring<\/strong> and UI professor Robert Anderson<\/strong>, and \u201cBest Supporting Performance in a Film\u201d to April Cleveland<\/strong> as \u201cDanielle\u201d in Jennifer Bechtel<\/strong>\u2019s C-U feature SCARY NORMAL<\/strong>. Congratulations to all, we say!<\/p>\n

We also applaud Stanley and SP<\/span> for taking baby steps to better incorporate our movie mavens and their merits into the cultural coverage of \u201cChampaign-Urbana\u2019s Online Magazine\u201d \u2026 outside the blanket overviews disguised as interviews with your humble editor. (Although, according to this praise of Stanley\u2019s own work<\/a> by SP<\/span> editor-in-chief Tracy Nectoux<\/strong>, he did indeed interview a local filmmaker named Jason Pankoke<\/strong><\/a>. Well, maybe<\/a>.) Of course, we\u2019re kidding; anything Smile Politely<\/span> can contribute to the cinema conversation of Champaign, Urbana, and the cities beyond is most welcome, and Jeremiah Stanley is a good man and great anchor around which to build this discourse.
