Contributor and film fan <strong>Jeremiah Stanley<\/strong> has surprised us again in this year\u2019s \u201cBest\u201d series, not by giving NAFF repeat props but for bestowing kudos upon individual achievements. This is intriguing to us at <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> since our reporting acumen typically avoids the critical assessment of films in our own film culture \u2013 we do our best to love \u2018em all, big or small \u2013 and it is uncommon for a writer in other <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> media to express value judgment in our milieu, even with a deliberately positive bent. Therefore, dearest readers, <em>this<\/em> is what it looks like when someone appreciates the art of local filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"BEST Arts 2013 :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/arts\/best_arts\/\" target=\"_blank\">In the \u201cBest Arts\u201d 2013 posting<\/a>, Stanley singles out the \u201c<strong>Ebertfest<\/strong>\u201d and community contributions of <strong>Shatterglass Studios<\/strong> while <strong>Matthew Green<\/strong> gives props to the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> for their (currently on-hold) live theater and opera programming. And then, Stanley awards \u201cBest Short Film\u201d to the dark comedy <strong>ALWAYS<\/strong>, co-directed by <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> research scientist <strong>Robin Berthier<\/strong>, \u201cBest Performance in a Film\u201d to <strong>Karen Vaccaro<\/strong>, the actress\/narrator in the documentary hybrid <strong>THE ACTUAL, AUTHENTIC VERSION OF WHO YOU SAY I AM<\/strong> directed by <strong>Mark Ring<\/strong> and UI professor <strong>Robert Anderson<\/strong>, and \u201cBest Supporting Performance in a Film\u201d to <strong>April Cleveland<\/strong> as \u201cDanielle\u201d in <strong>Jennifer Bechtel<\/strong>\u2019s C-U feature <strong>SCARY NORMAL<\/strong>. Congratulations to all, we say!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We also applaud Stanley and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SP<\/span> for taking baby steps to better incorporate our movie mavens and their merits into the cultural coverage of \u201cChampaign-Urbana\u2019s Online Magazine\u201d \u2026 outside the blanket overviews disguised as interviews with your humble editor. (Although, according to <a title=\"BEST of Smile Politely 2013 :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/opinion\/best_of_smile_politely\/\" target=\"_blank\">this praise of Stanley\u2019s own work<\/a> by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SP<\/span> editor-in-chief <strong>Tracy Nectoux<\/strong>, <a title=\"Jason Pankoke weaves an artistic tapestry :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/arts\/Jason_Pankoke_weaves_an_artistic_tapestry\/\" target=\"_blank\">he did indeed interview a local filmmaker named <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong><\/a>. Well, <a title=\"Consulting the MAYA calendar :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=5688\" target=\"_blank\">maybe<\/a>.)
