Its wide appeal \u2013 starting with the involvement of K-12 aged school children living in <strong>Champaign County<\/strong> \u2013 guaranteed coverage in other local media such as <a title=\"First Pens to Lens red-carpet gala planned :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/local\/2013-05-27\/first-pens-lens-red-carpet-gala-planned.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"Big Ideas on the Big Screen :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/arts\/big_ideas_on_the_big_screen1\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Smile Politely<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, so please hit those links to learn about the screening and its nine film shorts made by <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> filmmakers from student-written scripts. Wright St., Urbana, IL<\/strong>, to present \u201c<a title=\"&quot;Dinner and Bikes&quot; tour :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/dinnerandbikes.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dinner and Bikes<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d Starting at <strong>6:30 p.m.<\/strong>, chef <strong>Joshua Ploeg<\/strong> will serve up a full-course vegan meal with ingredients purchased locally, after which <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Everyday Bicycling<\/span><\/strong> author <strong>Elly Blue<\/strong> will discuss how to integrate two-wheelers into one\u2019s daily transit while <a title=\"Microcosm Publishing :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/microcosmpublishing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Microcosm Publishing<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Cantankerous Titles<\/strong> guru <strong>Joe Biel<\/strong> shows footage from his new documentary on Portland bike activism, <strong>AFTERMASS<\/strong>. <strong>Chicago<\/strong> indie journalist <strong>Aaron Cynic<\/strong> also joins the D&amp;B tour as scheduler and roadie. Lofty Champaign venue, <a title=\"The Velvet Elvis @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheVelvetElvisCU\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Velvet Elvis<\/strong><\/a>, will be hosting <a title=\"Urbana Basement presents Champaign Attic at The Velvet Elvis :: Facebook Events\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/519431764758683\/\" target=\"_blank\">a C-U alt-rock all-star gig featuring<\/a> <strong>Grandkids, Santah<\/strong>, and <strong>Elsinore<\/strong>, with the purpose of raising Web hosting and digital storage funds for <strong>Urbana Basement Sessions<\/strong>, founded by <strong>Jake Metz<\/strong> to archive the faces and sounds of our current music scene. <a title=\"Urbana Basement Sessions :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanabasement.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">You can sample early examples of their work here<\/a>, recorded in the Basement proper, and heretofore unseen footage will be projected in between sets at the Elvis, also to be recorded for posterity and to show off Metz and videographer <strong>Jack Maples<\/strong>\u2019 skills. Doors open at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> and bands go on at <strong>8 p.m.<\/strong>, while refreshments will be offered by local chef and part-time werewolf <strong>Mark \u201cShades\u201d Harstein<\/strong>. It would be smart to land tickets ($7 advance\/$10 door) through the <strong>Facebook<\/strong> links above, particularly if you want to find out where this secretive Elvis lies. BYOB, FYI.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As for P2L, we spent a little time over at the Art yesterday prior to its standing-room-only <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> show, complete with awards and swag bags and <strong>Matt Metcalf<\/strong> introductions and <strong>Zoo Improv<\/strong> interludes and <strong>Pekara<\/strong>-baked <strong>Oscar<\/strong> cookies (oh my!), eventually returning for the film-only <strong>9:30 p.m.<\/strong> encore. Many participating filmmakers populated the late show, including tuxedo-clad CUFS founders <strong>Brett Hays<\/strong> and <strong>Luke Boyce<\/strong>, and a palpable buzz drifted throughout the auditorium and into the streets. Our favorite entries included <strong>THE DEVIL USES PURELL<\/strong>, directed by <strong>Joe Taylor<\/strong> and <strong>Bill Kephart<\/strong> and written by <strong>Ella G.<\/strong> of <strong>Stratton Elementary School<\/strong>, Champaign; <strong>FLUFFYSTEIN<\/strong>, directed by <strong>Thomas Nicol<\/strong> and written by <strong>Maya K., Madelyn C.<\/strong>, and <strong>Taqia H<\/strong>. of <strong>Next Generation School<\/strong>, Champaign; and <strong>SUPER DUPER LOW<\/strong> directed by <strong>Mike Trippiedi<\/strong> and written by <strong>Quinn F.<\/strong> of <strong>South Side Elementary School<\/strong>, Champaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Honorable mention goes to <strong>SUSAN AND DAISY\u2019S ADVENTURE: EPISODE I<\/strong>, directed by <strong>Tim Meyers<\/strong> and written by <strong>Beatrice, Catherine, David, Dennis, Jonathan, Reuben<\/strong>, and <strong>Saewoong<\/strong> of the <strong>UIUC College of Education<\/strong>\u2019s <a title=\"University Primary School :: College of Education, UIUC\" href=\"http:\/\/education.illinois.edu\/ups\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>University Primary School<\/strong><\/a>, a fun fit of &#8220;surrealism lite&#8221; that is, of all things, a remake! Imagine our surprise this past weekend when, sitting down in the \u201cmovie theater\u201d room of the <strong>UPS Art Show<\/strong> at the <strong>Krannert Art Museum<\/strong>, a video loop treated your humble editor\u2019s family to a shaky camcorder rendition of <strong>SUSAN AND DAISY\u2019S ADVENTURE<\/strong> starring the entire pint-sized screenwriting team! We\u2019re still debating which iteration features the better eel \u2013 the carcass (!) animated by Nicol for P2L or the cardboard-and-soda-bottle mask with cape attachment worn by one of the UPS kids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Seeing the disembodied head of Mr. Eel sitting there in the art gallery only made us yearn for the return of <a title=\"BrainSmart Productions @ YouTube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/brainsmart\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Industrial Tape &amp; Cardboard<\/strong><\/a>.
