{"id":6680,"date":"2013-10-06T18:00:01","date_gmt":"2013-10-07T00:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=6680"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:47:57","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:47:57","slug":"fred-marx-visits-the-ui-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=6680","title":{"rendered":"Fred Marx visits the UI this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Beginning today, <strong>Sunday, October 6<\/strong>, through <strong>Thursday, October 10<\/strong>, the student residents at <strong>Allen Hall\/Unit One<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> will receive <a title=\"Frederick Marx schedule as AH\/UO Guest-in-Residence :: University Housing, UIUC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.housing.illinois.edu\/Announcements\/Allen%20Hall-Unit%20One\/Frederick%20Marx%20will%20be%20a%20Unit%20One%20Guest-in-Residence%20Oct%206%20-%20Oct%2010.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">several chances to get to know independent documentary producer <strong>Frederick Marx<\/strong><\/a>, a <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> native and UI graduate whose company <a title=\"Warrior Films :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.warriorfilms.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Warrior Films<\/strong><\/a> creates media intended to inspire the humanity inside us and prioritize healthy relationships between adults and youth and, by extension, our future generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While not overtly public events, Marx\u2019s presentations as a Guest-in-Residence at <a title=\"Allen Hall\/Unit One :: University Housing, UIUC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.housing.illinois.edu\/Current\/Living-Learning\/Allen.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>AH\/UO, 1005 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana<\/strong><\/a>, can be attended by non-students. Tonight\u2019s opening program is called \u201c<strong>My Life as an Artist: From Champaign to Zanskar<\/strong>\u201d and begins at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> in the <strong>South Rec Room<\/strong>, also the location for film screenings and additional talks. The former includes his most famous work, <a title=\"HOOP DREAMS :: Kartemquin Films\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kartemquin.com\/films\/hoop-dreams\" target=\"_blank\">the award-winning <strong>HOOP DREAMS<\/strong><\/a> (<strong>Mon., Oct. 7, 7 p.m.<\/strong>) on which he worked for Chicago\u2019s <strong>Kartemquin Films<\/strong>, and his most recent, a harrowing story about young children escorted from the mountains of <strong>Tibet<\/strong> to lower <strong>India<\/strong> by Buddhist monks in order to save their dying culture in <strong>JOURNEY FROM ZANSKAR<\/strong> (<strong>Weds., Oct. 9, 7 p.m.<\/strong>) featuring the <strong>Dali Lama<\/strong> and narrated by actor <strong>Richard Gere<\/strong>. Other programs include \u201c<strong>The Necessity for Healthy Rites of Passage for Youth<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Tues., Oct. 8, 7 p.m.<\/strong>) and \u201c<strong>Living a Life of Purpose<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Thurs., Oct. 10, 7 p.m.<\/strong>) rounding out the portrait of a filmmaker genuinely affecting social issues in a positive manner through his chosen life\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Other titles in the Marx filmography include <strong>THE UNSPOKEN<\/strong> (1999), a rare narrative feature about a preteen healer traveling the countryside, <strong>HIGHER GOALS<\/strong> (1992), an <strong>Emmy<\/strong>-nominated <strong>PBS<\/strong> special encouraging student athletes to take the \u201cstudent\u201d aspect seriously, and <strong>BOYS TO MEN?<\/strong> (2011) and <strong>RITES OF PASSAGE<\/strong> (in production) which examine different angles of the struggles in properly mentoring kids to become effective, compassionate adults. <strong>HOOP DREAMS<\/strong>, a fall 1994 theatrical release from <strong>Fine Line Features\/New Line Cinema<\/strong>, is probably as famous for being a highly compelling character study of <strong>Chicago<\/strong> inner city youth banking on college scholarships and basketball careers as the proverbial \u201cway out of the \u2018hood\u201d as it is for <a title=\"HOOP DREAMS review :: RogerEbert.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/hoop-dreams-1994\" target=\"_blank\">being called \u201cone of the great moviegoing experiences of my lifetime\u201d<\/a> by the late <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong>. At the time, many movie critics cried foul that <strong>HOOP DREAMS<\/strong> was not nominated for the <strong>Academy Award<\/strong> for Best Picture in 1995 by the default that it was a documentary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After his stay at AH\/UO is finished, Marx will introduce <strong>JOURNEY FROM ZANSKAR<\/strong> one additional time on <strong>Saturday, October 12, 2 p.m.<\/strong>, at the <strong>Art Theater Co-op, 126 W. Church St.<\/strong>, <strong>Champaign<\/strong>, in a screening presented by the UI <strong>University Laboratory High School<\/strong> (a.k.a. \u201cUni High\u201d) from which he graduated in 1973.
