Lester, 1969-2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Do us a favor, dearest readers, and make it personal policy to <em>never<\/em> take for granted the mysterious twists and turns shaping your experiences here on Earth. We rarely know in advance how our lives will play out \u2013 where we\u2019ll live, what we\u2019ll do, who we\u2019ll know, like, and love \u2013 but we <em>can<\/em> shape it to the best of our abilities, hopefully to personal satisfaction and for the better good, while valuing every second we spend doing so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> made the acquaintance of <strong>Chicago<\/strong> area make-up effects artist <strong>Joe Lester<\/strong> a year and a half ago through our mutual associate, <strong>Rissa Grandone<\/strong>, and your humble editor met him in person during the summer. At turns humble, quirky, and slightly enigmatic, Joe struck us as a model \u201cquiet giant\u201d devoted to exploring and sharing his craft while otherwise allowing his output to speak volumes for himself. Generously, he helped bring us <strong>Samantha Daley<\/strong>\u2019s creature make-up primer as seen in issue 6 of <strong>C-U Confidential<\/strong>, decorated handsomely with images of Joe\u2019s high-quality handiwork.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We had intended to discuss a follow-up piece with Joe when we could make the best use of our collective efforts. Sadly, neither us nor the film, television, stage, and haunted attraction artists calling him friend, mentor, and coworker will have another opportunity to collaborate with him. Joe passed away unexpectedly the evening of <strong>Monday, December 16<\/strong>, at age 44. We send our sincerest thoughts to his family as well as colleagues involved with the <strong>Bensenville<\/strong> effects firm he founded, <a title=\"The ImageWorks FX :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imageworksfx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The ImageWorks FX<\/strong><\/a>, and informational Web site he maintained, <a title=\"The Effects Lab :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theeffectslab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Effects Lab<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Joe\u2019s impressive sculpting work also appeared in the course materials at <a title=\"Dick Smith Special Makeup Effects Training :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dicksmithmake-up.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the school founded by legendary <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> make-up artist <strong>Dick Smith<\/strong><\/a> of <strong>TAXI DRIVER<\/strong>. \u201cIn a business that often makes people act stressed or just plain odd, Joe was an island of cheerful and much welcome normalcy,\u201d offered Smith\u2019s son <strong>David Smith<\/strong> in <a title=\"The ImageWorks FX @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheImageWorksFX\" target=\"_blank\">a statement shared by ImageWorks<\/a>. \u201cHis old-fashioned courtesy, cheerful demeanor, and kindness lifted me out of a bad mood many times.\u201d Even without the status of a Dick Smith or <strong>Rick Baker<\/strong>, we could easily tell from afar that Joe was already a success in character as well as character creation. Getting to know him better is now an opportunity lost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Joe\u2019s visitation and funeral service will be taking place later tonight, <strong>Saturday, December 21<\/strong>, at the <strong>Pedersen Ryberg Mortuary, 435 N.
